Thank you both. Like I said, I'm new to this, but eager to learn. Lol. I've never even thought about rooting up until now. I used to use my old phone as a wifi hotspot until it broke (got ran over by a car...) and VM sent me this phone for free as a replacement. I tried to use it as a hotspot, but I guess they disabled that ability or whatever they do to keep us from using it so I decided to root the phone so I could go ahead and use it as a hotspot. Now I'm thinking about trying to install a different ROM without all the bloatware because my phone says it only has 23mb available space. I can't even install Facebook.

ya, it makes a big difference in performance and internal storage. im gonna be releasing a customized themed rom in a few days, so keep ur eyes peeled! curtis also released a nice ics themed rom available on the board. if u dont wanna go themed, i suggest harmonia. its a nice barebones rom with a few performance tweaks and a couple custom apps. i suggest ditching wifi tether for barnacle tho (barnacle will come prepackaged with the rom i am releasing). barnicle seems to work way better on the venture than wifi tether. the most important thing tho, if u havent already done it, u need to flash cwm recovery (found in the "recovery" thread on our board) and perform a backup with it. this is a must, especially if u are new to this stuff. it will let u recover to the previous state just in case something goes wrong in the process of flashing a new rom. any questions, feel free to ask! ;-)

read all the way thru the entire recovery thread. we have walked people through it step by step a few times in there. just follow directions closely, and u shouldnt have probs. if u do have probs that arent mentioned in the recovery thread, please ask your questions in the recovery thread. best to keep the threads as relevant as possible. thanks!

Lightbulb MSL, HL and AAA keys

Thanks for the stepbystep divinebovine ... that username makes me think of India where cow's are held sacred !

I was wondering would some of the utilities used in this venture root could possibly be used to backup the MSL, HL and AAA keys from the venture. Could you possibly test it out on your venture. Here's a (groovypost>howto>epic-4g-on-virgin-mobile) step by step that has been used for a samsung phone.

Please let me know and a bunch of thanks in advance ...

Arrow Root using poot

I have tried this before on my Venture but to no avail. As I was very eager to root before I didn't follow instructions and I had a bootloop. Fixed all and now trying to root again. I have cleared all data from both Poot and Ministro, un-installed and tried to re-install. Poot says everything went fine as all lines start with + and not a -
P.S I even rebooted a few times just to check if I had root, yet root checker says no root. I am the only one without root. Thanks in advance!!!

did u install superuser before root check? very important step... u r probably already rooted, u just need superuser to grant permissions for apps to use root (including root check). if u dont install superuser, it will tell u that u r not rooted.

welcome to androidforums.com!! good to have u!

if u r comfortable, i would flash cwm recovery and try one of the other roms. getting rid of a bunch of the bloat seems to help battery life some! i recommend curtis's ics themed rom. its nice and stylish, but quick and doesnt use much resource. its super stable! not to mention, i am working on compiling a kernel from what i believe is our source code, so if that is successful, we should soon have a kernel with support to change cpu values. so u could swap some stuff around and get even better battery life, or crank that sucka up and get awesome performance out of it! lol. just throwin it out there!

Optimus Elite root with an apk
Don't forget to click "Thanks" on his post!

Just above the attached files, there is a Sendspace link. That's got the version that will run on the Venture. Or, use this QR code:

Once you have the .apk, install it. An easy way is to copy it to the SD card and use a file manager (I like AndroZip because it's small). The QR code probably skips straight to installing it for you, I didn't get to test it.

Then find Poot in your apps and run it. It will require you to install Ministro II. Once that's done, it will download additional libraries.

Now you're ready to go. Run Poot, tap the button to Poot your phone, install SuperUser, install RootCheck. Then enjoy...install BusyBox, use a file manager to delete/rename that godawful Virgin Mobile boot sound in /system/media/bootsound.wav, whatever you want, you are root.

You can delete Ministro and Poot once it's done.

AWW YEAH!!!!!!!!!!
I was able to root my Virgin Mobile PCD Venture cell phone, and I installed Busybox as recommended in the instructions. I have no clue of what to do next. My reason for rooting the phone is because I want to use Foxfi full version on my venture. Could someone please instruct me on what to do. I've downloaded foxfi to my venture, and installed it, but I can't get foxfi to stay active. When I click the on function, the count begins 1 2 3. Then it goes hotspot active for a half second, and then hotspot off. Please, please help.

I had more luck with barnacle. Works well on this model from what I've seen.

link to barnacle at google play

Foxfi and Wireless Tether would not work well for me on the venture.

superuser is good to go. no need to mod it unless ur an advanced user. superuser will pop up a box when a service requires permission to access root. u have the option to allow or deny. most of the time u will want to allow. only derny if u dont trust the app requesting permission.

r u trying to use the poot/ministro again after flashing the new rom? all of the roms in here come pre-rooted. there should be no need to re-root your phone after flashing a new rom.

also, the ics rom in the original post has framework and other misc errors. curtis handed over the ics rom to me, as he just didnt have the energy to continue keeping up on it, and so i rebuilt it. there is actually 2 versions of the ics rom available in the thread. dont download the one in the first post of the ics thread, look for the one built by me, its more near the end of the thread (page 3 of the thread, i believe).

Been trying off-and-on for the past three days to root my Chaser (which, as I understand, is the same method as the Venture), and just keep getting the "fatal error" in Poot: any advice at all beyond "keep trying til it works"?

Yeah. I initally found an .apk, saved to my sd, then installed from that. when that didn't work, i uninstalled, and let Poot download and install it from the Play store. Then I run Poot, it starts downloading libraries, gets to 100% complete, and pops up with "fatal error".

UPDATE:: Phone is rooted. I uninstalled Ministro II and Poot, deleted both from my SD card. Unmounted and remounted my card (no idea if it had anything to do with the success), typed in the URL for Poot, downloaded the file, and ran it. Let it download Ministro, was just about to go to bed when I looked at the phone, and saw a screen I'd never seen before: a button at the top telling me to Poot my phone.

I've got Root, and it only took about a half dozen tries. THANK YOU, ALL!!!
