Anyone want to package those 4.0.2 radios + bootloader into an update.zip? I'm on my work laptop and don't have the stuff installed to sign the .zip file, but I'd love to do some swapping back and forth to test.

Nevermind, I did it myself.

Here's the packaged zip for the 4.0.2 radios. I just tested it and it works but I take no responsibility for screwing up your phone and I highly recommend you do not flash this unless you know how to use fastboot to write the factory radios back to your phone.

I had to go into the data settings and toggle data on/off to get it to connect.

Your right you can't nandroid back to a prior Radio. The point i was trying to make with doing a backup before doing any modding is this.

Scenario 1. You don't make a nandroid before flashing this new radio. Everything goes well but for whatever reason you want to go back to the old radio until the official one comes out. So you flash the old radio and during that something goes awry ...so you end up having to do a factory reset or restoring to a prior backup that you made a month ago.

Scenario2. You make a nandroid backup before flashing this radio. The rests is the same as above except when you do a factory reset you restore to the backup you made an hour ago or yesterday or whenever it was that you made the backup prior to flashing this radio. Now you are back to where you were before flashing the radio ...settings apps all that.

I wonder trophy if doing a factory reset also wipes out your nandroid backups? It didn't with an sdcard, but what about now? If you copied the backup to your computer you'd be good to go, but how many do that? But I'm not sure if my theory is correct.

Sometimes i think people are just simply too eager to test out untested software. This is one of those examples. Just wait for the official release for something so low level.

So you just "Install zip from SD Card" in CWM and this will put the old radios back on and the older bootloader back on? So that it's like you never flashed the leaked radios/bootloader?

Uhm, no, it appears to be linked to the Verizon data outage...I am in ohio which says it was an affected area.. Data appears to be back now and i will reflash the new radio and report back...

This leak did absolutely nothing for me.
No change in performance or signal levels.

Unknown as yet if handovers are improved but I will find out shortly.

We like to tinker, installing the newest leaks is half the fun of owning an open device.

understood. I'd love to flash cutting edge stuff to my gnex but unfortunately I use it for work. Cant be with a phone that might have potential glitches.

lol funny you mention that. I was in convo with another guide on here last night about that. I don't fully understand it yet and i'm trying to wrap my brain around it actually. I need to do some reading in the Nexus S forums.

I am also going to hold off. I have no signal strength issues right now. I will look into this more as more people try the new radio and we get more results.

That being said, what I did (had to return the phone for another, some hardware issue) was do a backup in cwr, save it to the comp, rerooted, installed recovery, copied nandroid to phone and restored. Worked great. I would nandroid and copy that when I flash a new rom in the coming days. I'm afraid that a factory reset will wipe everything out, music and pictures included.

just flashed, count me in as one of those seeing improvement. 3g only here, no 4g yet...but i'm steady in the mid -80s now (was bouncing back and forth between there and the -100s), and download speed went from 1.09 to 1.55. upload stayed about the same.

i'm gonna stick with this for a while and see if it sticks around...

Sounds like the verdict is still out...I'd wait unless you feel comfortable with flashing the radio and restoring the old one if you encounter problems.

i've flashed last night. in a 4g area, i saw no improvements in signal strength. at my desk at work (a 3g building), i see no differences in signal strength. my cubemate has the GNex as well, non-rooted, 4.0.2... we have the same numbers to report: -120dBm 99asu (yeah, low signal sucks like the life out of my battery).

coming from an OG droid, the 3G signal strength was -93dBm at my desk.

i think a lot of people have assumed that this would somehow improve the signal strength, but i haven't seen what in fact this is supposed to improve. as posted earlier, half the fun of the GNex/rooting is flashing and testing and tinkering and customizing.

i haven't played with it enough to notice if it improves the data connectivity issues people are experiencing. prior to flashing i've been foruntate to lose data maybe twice throughout a given day, which is acceptable for me. i am glad that it reconnects on it's own and i'm not forced to toggle airplane mode to "find the aliens" again.

I didn't assume anything. At home last night, I got a 10-15 dBm increase in signal strength and a 40-50% increase in download speeds from testing before and after. I also got about a 30% cut in upload speeds (which is not critical, IMO, but is noteworthy).

I've been testing it here at work and am not seeing a significant difference - but the difference was clear and immediate at home last night.

i have flashed the new radios/bootloader

initially after reboot it showed 3g only which the phone had not done before and i was concerned, but a minute later 4g came up and has been going fine since

i have experienced no other problems, and the benefits seem marginal at this point, but I wasn't having problems with the old radios anyway...FWIW

My experience with the new radios:

I have a very weak 3g signal in my house and there is no 4g in my area.

I've noticed with the new radios that the 3g signal is slightly stronger and my download/upload speeds are significantly improved (doubled and tripled in some test).

The thing that sticks out most though...my battery seems to be getting better and better and today I am at 5 hours 20 mins, about 2 hours on 3g and 3 hours on wifi, sending some texts, phone calls, quick web browsing..normal stuff..and I am at 81% battery. At this rate, I will be getting around 25 hours on a charge with normal use. This is better than what I have been seeing.

I think these radios are helping more so with signal hand-offs, signal searching(which in turn helps battery), etc..and slightly with the actual signal itself.

I think these radios are helping more so with signal hand-offs, signal searching(which in turn helps battery), etc..and slightly with the actual signal itself.
wow i I WISH i was gettin that type of battery life. I"m on wifi usually at work and i just usually text a lot and poof batterly life SUCKS

I've seen a few dbm loss in signal since applying the radio but that could be any number of things around my desk (in a datacenter) that could be causing that. I'm also seeing slow LTE speeds but that may be remnants of the outage this morning.

If it continues I can always flash back the other radios. go go fastboot

Factory reset appears to leave sd card portion of internal alone. I did a full wipe of data/cache/dalvik before installing a rom + gapps last night and my su.zip was still on the card afterward. Would have been hard to tell with pics since they've been synching to the cloud.

I've been testing it here at work and am not seeing a significant difference - but the difference was clear and immediate at home last night.
yeah, i get your point. i think what i was trying to say is that since this is leaked, there's really no chanelog out there to clarify the specific improvements with the new radios.

that said, if people are getting better performance outta their phones with the new radios, that's great. that's what i was hoping for - just haven't seen in it myself.

on similar note... do the ROMs coming out from the 4.0.3 AOSP have these new radios? or are folks having to flash the radios too?

It depends on the ROM. The radios can be applied through CWM, so if the ROM developer chooses to package up the new radios, it'll have them.

The AOSP repository doesn't have the leaked radio code for these radios right now, so it's not packaged up with 4.0.3 just because the 4.0.3 code is available.

Has anyone else noticed any data issues with the new radio today, or is vzw in general still having issues? I'm not losing data that I can see, but some of my push email notifications are coming thru 25 or more minutes late and some heytell messages aren't coming thru til I open the app...

I've been powering off each night and charging while it's off the last few days...seems that the battery is becoming more calibrated and lasting longer and longer. I was at 17 hours when I put it on the charger, 2 hours screen on time, and had 35% battery remaining.

Download 4.0.2 radio and flash. This is just the radio so no need to wipe data.

Driving through the Lehigh valley listening to shoutcast this morning, not promising for the new radio...4g dropped to 3g every few minutes and wouldn't come back unless I switched to cdma and then back to cdma / lte.

That being said, the speed was outstanding.

Edit: Now in NYC, upload speed is awful. Download around 6.0, upload only 0.2 or so average...one bar 4g indoors.

A lot of weirdness on the drive too...on i287 around morristown it switched to 4g (which I figured was the outskirts of NYC 4g), but a minute or so later switched to 1x for a while. There should have at least been 3g there...then it wouldn't go back to 4g til I got impatient and rebooted.
