They are apps that have been modded to have black backgrounds or black and white colors are swapped.

Here's an example of gmail:

I use a combination of them (zips and apks from two different sites) on my Galaxy Nexus (AOPK b40) and on my HP Touchpad (CM9). It's always a good idea to make a recovery backup first.

Whats this backup business? I don't believe i have ever heard you mentions such a thing :P I don't really wanna try it right now because one of my games is a Pain in the rear to do device transfers on, and each wipe requires a new transfer

Bump!

These JB apps worked great for me with Codename Android rom, but I had to convert Gmail from system app to user app with TIBU. Justinbean inverted JB gapps 8/3 links up - xda-developers

Would have LOVED to have email (exchange) inverted as well, but having trouble finding one anywhere that works.

So? Make a backup in recovery and go at it.

I find you have to find a few of these apps in Titanium backup and make sure they aren't red (system). If they are, you can long-press them and convert to user. I had to convert Gmail and Google+ on my Nexus 7 tablet.

If it doesn't work and you have issues, restore your backup and maybe just flash individual files instead of all of them.

Because it's a long process of having to install each app one by one through TiBu

I've been using these:

DarkJelly DJDarkKnight

They're a bit themed, in that they're inverted and the dividers or highlights are white and they don't change color when a theme's applied (Am I OCD or experiencing first world problems -- you decide!).

I do like that the calendar widget is quasi-transparent between days, so the wallpaper peeks through.

Travp has inverted some too -- I ran his on ICS. Also nicely done, and they take themes better. I'm hoping he works up the rest of the apps (G+, reader, etc) for JB.

This is the JP inverted apps I use and it's been updated about once a week lately: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797292

Always a good idea to make sure you make a nandroid before flashing this.

You already have a phone app so if it isn't there, how can you lose the one you already have? The phone app is part of your rom. (I flash gApps, then these.)

I also had the same problem with the justinbean. I install it and go through all the steps and when it reboots it shows the green android dude instead of what is supposed to be the phone app. When I click on the dude it says "app not installed" or something like that. I know the app is still on the phone because I see it under settings/apps. Is it because this app is actually supposed to be ran on the galaxy s3?

Can you find the phone app in your list of apps?

Are you running a Jelly Bean rom? Works fine for me on Codename Android.

You might also check out the thread on XDA for more info.

Well I gave up the jellybelly ROM and with a different ROM. Now everything is fine. I guess the inverted apps don't work well with jellybelly and its version of gapps.

That's what I do....

Create recovery backup.
Flash rom, gApps recommended by that rom, custom kernel (GlaDOS).
Reboot, if running ok, I continue:
Flash inverted apps, and inverted email (not usually included with apps)

If there's an issue with something, I'll restore my backup.

I assume that there's stuff in Google's apps that aren't included in the inverted apps so I flash both.

bump...

Aroma (interactive - pick apps you want installed) and Quick Flash both working great here with Codename Android on two different devices. QF version had drop box, which I didn't see in Aroma. Just flash from CWM or TWRP.

As always, have a recovery backup before flashing.

Previous versions seemed to be more buggy, with email being the biggest culprit. I was surprised how solid this was.
