Apparently there was another update to Google Wallet to version 1.5-R79-v5
but it states "your device isn't compatible with this version" do we have to side load the update from now on?

Sup shadyyy! I got the same error. I would imagine that a sideload would be in order but beware your source. With that in mind, I am yet to look for an apk since the current version is working fine, though I kinda really wanna update it. Lol. I will look around an try to post a link when I get the chance.
Here's the one I installed a couple weeks ago. I've got it all set up and it seems to be running fine, I just haven't had the chance to actually buy something yet.
EDIT: This is the R75 version, not the newest R79.

Yeah I was thinking the same, mine works perfectly but having the most recent updated version is something i kinda want. I heard that there was a modded apk that takes away the carrier warnings so it doesnt matter what network you are on

The updated version was worth the install for me because I've got both my visa cards linked now instead the Google gift card.
im on version 1.5-r75-v6 and it works fine, just bought something today, what is the benefit of updating the app?
On the version that I was previously on, you were only allowed to add MasterCard credit cards and Google gift cards. On the new version, you can add Visa, Mastercard, etc as well as the Google gift card.
Device(s): Galaxy Nexus rooted & ROMmed, OG Droid (retired)
Carrier: Verizon

Yeah the1.5-R75-v6 version added all the additional card brands; I have all mine added. I have no idea what the R79 version brings to the table.
Is it POSSIBLE that this is a version for GSM phones? Maybe that's why Verizon users can't install it: it might botch a good thing we have with R75. Just speculating here...

Not sure what is in R79.
But...
When I tried to re-load GW a couple weeks ago, I could not load it from the market. I tried every trick in book that used to work. I think VZW has gotten serious about locking us out.
I'm going to add that new version to my phone. I'm currently still on a very old side-loaded version. What do I have to do to remove the current version before installing the new one? Thanks!

I removed all my cards, reset Wallet (from its settings menu), then uninstalled it before installing the new apk.
So, it finally happened this morning, tried to open wallet to pay for a drink, got a "This version is no longer supported, please update to latest version in Play Store". Except as we know, latest version is blocked from VZW phones. So after 9 months, Verizon has FINALLY managed to get Wallet completely blocked from being installed/updated from the market.
So we are going to need a safe apk for Wallet if we want to continue to use it.
edit:
Ok, I installed the one from the xda link posted above. Another nice little bonus, you can't even get into the app to reset it, so I was gnashing my teeth afraid I was going to brick my secure element. But at least for me, it installed fine, and all my info was still there.

Same here. The apk from xda worked fine for me too. I didn't even have a hiccup. I dl'd the actual apk from page 2 of that thread and then just launched it straight from the sdcard. Back in the game.
Thanks for posting this guys....I went to McDonald's for lunch just now and saw my Google Wallet quit working. I side-loaded the new version on top of the previous version, and all is good again!!
I've not had a chance to see if this works or not but I will try it when I get home. If you get a chance to try it before me please let us know how it works.
Instructions:
On your device, navigate to Settings > Applications > All > Market and select Clear Data.
Launch ES File Explorer or Root Explorer.
In ES File Explorer under Settings > Root Settings, enable Root Explorer and Mount File System. In Root Explorer, you can simply tap the little mount r/w icon at the top of the screen.
Navigate to the /system folder and open the file name build.prop.
Keep the file pressed and select copy. Paste it somewhere else in any folder and rename the file. (This was a backup.)
Go back to the original file, and open it to edit it. In ES File Explorer, long-press the file and open it in ES Note Editor.
Make the following changes to the lines ro.product.model and ro.product.manufacturer (Nexus S is a widely supported device, but you can change the device as per your requirement):
ro.product.model = Nexus S
ro.product.manufacturer = samsung
Once the changes are made, save the file.
You can now head back to the Market to try and download previously un supported apps, but even if you do manage to download them, there is no guarantee that it will work.
Eligible Devices
Google Wallet with tap and pay requires an NFC enabled Android device with a Secure Element chip running the most recent Android operating system. Google Wallet is available on the following devices on select carrier networks:
Samsung Nexus S on Sprint
Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Sprint
Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM/HSPA+ (available for purchase on Google Play)
Samsung Galaxy S3 on Sprint
LG Viper™ 4G LTE on Sprint
LG Optimus Elite™ on Sprint and Virgin Mobile
HTC EVO 4G LTE on Sprint
Asus Nexus 7 Tablet (WiFi only) (available for purchase on Google Play)
International Devices
At this time, Google Wallet does not support devices purchased internationally. The eligible device list above only applies to devices purchased from the listed carriers next them. For example, an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S3 purchased internationally will not work with Google Wallet.

Reason: Added in Eligible Devices
I downloaded the R79 apk and installed, but now I get the error and it does not work. Words cannot express the hatred I feel for those pricks at VZN. When the contract is up, I'm outta there.

I just installed the R79-v5 and this one seems to still work on VZW. I think the newest version is the R79-v6, which is causing the 'need to update' issue.
