So, gave the 12/17 nightly a quick run. Rather behind compared to some of the other ROMs out, like Sourcery, and I couldn't even find a way to adjust CPU settings, but it seemed to be a smooth runner.

yeah i have flashed one of the nightlies and it was really smooth and everything worked. But in terms of features it is really lacking. I have tried every 4.2 rom out there for the Gnex and i honestly cant stop myself from going back to the latest Xenon build. However, I have flashed all of the nightlies on my Nexus 7 so far (i dont need a crazy amout of features on my tablet like i do my phone) and it is running AMAZINGLY. I will continue to flash the nightlies daily and i am looking forward to seeing what comes of CM10.1. Maybe one day it will have the features that so many of use crave but for now it is still really solid and smooth but thats about it
If you want a CM ROM that is 4.2 and has a few more features so far I would check out Euroskank. That one isn't bad
Upgrade from 10.0 nightly to 10.1 nightly totally borked my installation. Generally in-place upgrades are fine, but if you want to go 10.1, I'd do a wipe and clean install.

I have recently gone from Dinc to the Gnex and am thinking for the first time to root and run custom ROM on a device. I am thinking of going with CM 10.1 nightly but am wonder do I need to reinstall every so often to get fixes or do they come over the air?
Hopefully I can try this soon. Had problems trying to root last night because ADB wasn't coming up in fastboot. Going to try a toolkit process tonight from xdadevelopers that I hope gets me past that obstacle.
I installed the update via the CM Updater... flashed, then flashed the Gapps I've been running for CM10 and subsequent builds... suddenly everything went haywire... first I kept getting the "unfortunately setup has stopped working" pop up and couldn't do anything but pull down the notification bar... restarted several times... still no dice... so I tried to wipe... got stuck in continuous CM boot animation... booted in recovery and tried to flash another ROM I had saved... same thing... continuous boot animation.. at last check about 3 hours... any ideas on how to fix this?
also... apologies if this is in the wrong spot... just figured since we were talking about this ROM....

I flashed the first nightly build for 10.1 and have had zero issues. Battery life is as good as I have had it on other ROMs, it is really snappy, yes all of the features are not there....yet. The main thing that I want back from the 10 build is the Bluetooth MAP profiles so that it will transfer to my car's display. Other than that, I am happy with it. I flashed the next one late yesterday (the Experimental one) and still no issues.
I came from JellyBelly 11.0.....was waiting for the 11.1 release and had to flash something (was getting the shakes and cold sweats).

Per their G+ post, you are NOT supposed to install 10.1 with their CM Updater. Because the file system changes from 10.0 to 10.1, a bunch of stuff won't work. Which means flashing back won't work, due to the same reason.
You will probably have to merge all your files to the new location.
When I decided to roll back to 4.1 from 4.2.1 (and all the associated file issues) I decided it was easier to copy/backup my files to my computer and then use Wugfresh's toolkit to unroot and reflash to 4.0.4 (randomly chosen version). I then re-rooted and applied my ROM of choice. Worked perfectly.

For your first ROM, I would try something a little more stable. I'm not trying to bad mouth CM, they just released 10.1 though, and there's been a few bugs reported (there's bound to be bugs-a-plenty in a ROM's first few releases on a new version of Android).
If you are looking for something more stable, try either XenonHD (quite a few mods, similar to what CM would have, if not more) or MMuzzy's stock 4.2.1 build (very close to stock with just a couple mods). I've been on both and they're both great ROMs.
CM 10.1 is still a viable option, just be prepared to read through it's forum pages for warnings and fixes for bugs.

Starting to get a little cold feet on the custom ROM's.
Once installed does the device get notified of any updates/fixes?

By updates are you referring to CM or from Verizon? I assumed that CM incorporates anything we'd get from Verizon. Is that correct? Thanks.

I am referring to the CM Night lies from CyanogenMod. I dirty flash them each night along with the 21212012 GApps. I wipe cache & Delvik and the flash. With those two files you should have everything that you need. Not sure what Verizon gives you (bloatware?), but this will work perfectly on Verizon's network.

Are you pulling down gapps each time you get the nightly? Our can you keep a copy to 're-flash?

I keep the same copy of the 12122012 GApps in my download folder and reflash them. The CMUpdater will download the new nightlies to a folder named "cmupdater". I use TWRP to flash them both at the same time.
Well, I have stepped out of my comfort zone by rooting and installing CM10.1. When I decide to update the next nightly build will I have to go through installing all apps and setting the phone up with widgets and such or does the new update just update code on existing ROM?

If you download the newest nightly build, reboot into recovery, wipe cache & delvik, you can then flash the new nightly and then the GApps. This will keep all of your settings and applications. This is what is referee to as a dirty flash.

Does this then retain all your past wallpaper/desktop setups? Also does it retain all of your logged in apps/forums?
Been running CM10.1 nightly and only issue to report is 3 times got an error that trebuchet quit working. Ended up clearing the app data and have had zero issues since.
Really like the ROM only wish there was a calculator widget for the lock screen.

Just tried the built in updater and found it incredibly easy and efficient. Latest update seems to have optimized the auto rotate for the wallpaper/desktop.

I downloaded the new update this morning, but got busy and have not installed yet. I will switch batteries and get onto it.
I know I'm late to the party but just thought that I'd add:
I did a clean wipe and installed CM 10.1 from December 21st and have had no issues. I think there was something funny with the SDCARD being moved with earlier nightlies, but I went from Bugless Beast to CM10.1 with zero issues.
After days with absolutely no issues, I started getting "unfortunately, Google Voice has stopped". I have tried a clean install and even a different ROM. I am still unable to use Google Voice. Any suggestions please?

Can you restore an older backup from when it was working? I have not used Google Voice in quite a while because I never got it working properly with Verizon (on a voice mail side).

I don't. my version and my back up are 0.4.2.72 since December 5. I use the voicemail just fine. It works even after it says it won't work wit my carrier Verizon.

When my phone goes to voicemail, it is someone else's mailbox. I have never been able to figure it out since I switched from a 3G DX to my 4G GNex last year. I miss Google Voice.

"If you are having trouble configuring Google Voice as your voicemail service on Verizon you can make the switch manually by dialing these three activation codes:
*71[Your Google Voice number]
*90[Your Google Voice number]
*92[Your Google Voice number]"
I did this once and never really had to set it up again. Now, every time I flash a new ROM or wipe I just go into Voice and sign in. It will bring up the Google window showing that it's asking for permissions or something, and just hit accept.

Well can you believe it? It is because of me turning on my talkaton on my iPad. I turned that off and Voice is now OK
Holy Cow! I did and saw an immediate improvement with screen transition.
I am thinking with this app that I might be getting worse battery life but am not sure if it is the latest nightly, Tiny Kernel, the app or in my head...
Has anyone had their home button become offset from the middle position? I flashed the 01/08/2013 nightly and is offset to the left now.
Yes me too. I think it has to do with the desktop rotation but I haven't had a chance to verify it. I will with the new nightly I am downloading right now.

Went ahead and downloaded the 01/09/2013 nightly and it is back to normal. Thought I was going crazy....I should have taken a screenshot first.
I put mine in the dock at work and home so maybe something got borked up.

Do you have your desktop rotate or do you have that feature turned off? I just installed the latest nightly on mine, it would take at least half a day for it to happen. after I installed the new nightly I turn off the screen rotation feature.I will see if it happens again and report back.
So, I'm quite happy with CM 10.1. CM10 was nice but it always had just a little too much battery consumption. Not awful, I was just always on the edge of not making it through the day - and despite my attempts, kernels didn't seem to address the problem.
10.1 has improved that, and LeanKernel has improved it even more. I'm just about back to where I was with CM9.
