Default Help with root?

First let me say I'm a total noob when it comes to this stuff. What I want to do is root so I get get tether going and stop the wifi nag and restore the wifi toggle.

Is this a nie guide to follow to do what I want to do?

Not trying to be a jerk, but have you read the guides that are already out there? If so, it would be better to ask questions about things that are unclear to you.

yeah I agree with ylexot there are plent of guides out there and a few different (but similar) root methods. Your best bet is to do your research, then more research, after that pick a guide you want to follow and do it step by step. If you come to a step you dont know then ask questions. I threw up a post a few days ago with basically everything you would want or need to know up to this point (guide created by droidstyle).

foxfi from market willl get you tethering without root
and if the wifi nag you are talking about is the pop up box that ask if you want to connect to wifi like when you open the market you can get rid of it without rooting also by using and app called anycut to make a short cut to the setting that turns it off (its posted somewhere ill have to look for it )

this will get rid of the wifi pop up

Download Anycut
Install
Open and select "Activity"
Scroll down to "HiddenMenuWiFiOffload
Click OK
Go to the Shortcut it created
Click it
Select Disable WiFiOffloading
Click OK
Delete the shortcut (if you would like)

This is a really good place to start in learning about how to mess with our particular phones...

there is a newer way to root however that does not involve using ODIN..

Thanks, im rooted now. I have the Superuser app and i downloaded a root checker app that confirms im rooted.

So I pop on the market place to get a wifi app. I tired a few and they load up and say they are running fine but my tablet doesnt see any of the networks they are putting out. Am I missing a setting?

i would head over to the xda forums and look around over there...as scummy as VZW is in regards to treating their customers i personally don't believe in free tethering (its a theft of services, and i believe it was one of the factors that pushed VZW to adopt tiered data plans)...but i know for a fact there is plenty of discussion over there on how to make it work...

Thanks and I understand your point of view. As it turns out FoxFi works fine for me now that I'm rooted, it did not work stock. Go figure.

it doesn't really bother me as much as it used to...because tiered data is here, and its here to stay, but nobody will ever convince me that illegal tethering was not a major factor in pushing VZW to dump the unlimited plans...

i completely understand the appeal of tethering as i have a WiFi only iPad2..im just not personally a big fan of it...

Yeah, i see in a lot of data plan threads how people need unlimited data to tether and use 60gigs a month. I only use it once in a great while.

exactly...these are the people i take issue with...not the occasional user that just wants to use their iPad or other tablet to check a website

From my experience today, the non Odin root is easy, but has some wifi tethering issues. Odin is the way to go. Hands down.

Also, with the S3 on Verizon, please... please use caution if you aren't pro status with this sort of thing. Feel free to PM me for help--- always happy to share my experiences.

Is it just wifi that's messed up? I got foxfi working right now and even got ride of the wifi nag. What does Odin do for me I don't got now?

Foxfi worked but wifi teather, barnacle, etc didnt work. After rooting by putting on a rooted stock rom with odin i was able to configure wifi teather to use samsung galaxy nexus lte profile. That was the only issue i had. Odin basically allows you to put things on the device from a pc. Its saved my phone when i broke the bootloader. If its rooted and working how you want.... dont fix whats not busted. But i would say look at odin and just watch videos know how its works. If something goes bad its a lifesaver.
