Well, if I crash and burn on the way home or if the rapture arrives, or my wife has me stop at the store for milk etc

I had to smile when I read this, but I think if you check with the wife, she'll say your priorities are out of order. #3 should be #1. LOL

@php111 - I honestly have not played with the Home Screen dock. I put all my icons on the home screens themselves (especially since they gave us 5 of them). But I do know that different launcher apps do provide some customization on the number of dock icons. Some also let you back up your current launcher configuration so you can restore it later without having to rebuild it, as you would if you flashed a different ROM.

There may be something in the user manual about the dock. You can download the user manual on the Samsung website.

I watched a YouTube on how to install ROMs. I made a choice to go with and to install CyanogenMOD, and that's what I am currently using right now.

Your funny! How do you have your phone flashed? It looks like you are off from work? I dont work. I receive disabled benefit payments before age 22. I receive money that way. The reason why I can't use anyone's credit card is because I live in a group home, and they won't allow us paying someone to use their credit/debit cards. That's why in my earlier posts I said no no one I know of.

If you go to my first post on the page, you will see my signature, which has links for what I run. Just click on the "show" button in my post.

Just remember your nandroid backups first before flashing.

Also, nandroid backups can take up alot of space. And depending on where you are saving them (internal or external) I would keep at least 1 on your sd card and the others, perhaps 2, on your computer.

I see. There is a problem with that. Please see my thread of the SD card. Someone did put my SD card in for me, but when I connect my S3 to my computer I don't see my SD card, and I only see ''phone'' listed.

Basically, download the kernel like you have done for your rom.
Boot into recovery, make a nandroid, wipe cache and dalvik, flash the kernel, wipe cache and dalvik again, then reboot.
If you ever find another kernel, just make sure it will work with not only your device, but the rom you are on. Not all kernels will work with all roms.

Do you mean on the display (the icons, etc.) or are you meaning the switches on the edge of the S3?

The switches can be made less sensitive if you use a case. Some types, like the Otterbox Commuter I use, actually make the edge buttons rather hard to press. But I like that, because with it I would constantly be pressing the volume button when using one hand to press the power button. it is a really bone-headed design IMO to put a switch opposite the power switch, because you need to provide some sort of resistance against pushing the power switch. I prefer having the power on top, as many smartphones had done.

To reduce display sensitivity, often using a screen protection film can do that, and they can be very affordable. But some people don't like them. They can interfere with the brightness of the display and can also sometimes feel less slippery, making it harder to slide a finger on the glass.

Aside from that, touch screens can take a bit of getting used to. I still catch myself trying to wipe away a dust spec and having undesired consequences.

Addictive, isn't it? LOL. Don't go too crazy. Take the time to explore the ROM you flash and find all its nifty goodies.

There's been a lot of discussion on this issue. What you need to do first is download the USB drivers from the Samsung website for your computer. For example if it is Windows 7 you want to get the USB driver that works with Windows 7. Once that is installed, you may need to reboot both the computer and your phone to make it work correctly.

Next, it is very important that you use the USB/charging cable that came with your S3 when you want to connect it to the PC using USB. I don't think anyone has yet figured out why, but for some reason not using that cable can cause instability when trying to access your phone's files over USB. I also recommend you plug the cable directly into a USB port on the front or back of your computer. Don't use a USB hub for that cable connection.

Regarding that cable, the funny thing about how reliable it seems to be - I had this same kind of USB connection problem between my Android tablet and PC, using a generic USB cable. I switched to using this Samsung S3 cable (the tablet is an Acer) and it fixed the problem! So definitely use the Samsung S3 provided cable.

Lastly, sometimes when my tablet does this to me (not showing all the tablet's files on the PC) I have to use the Storage menu on the tablet to Un-mount its SD card. Once that is completed, I re-mount the SD card. Then the files will show up on the PC. It's strange how this issue seems to be a problem for so many people, but the Android forums are full of discussion about it. Ever since the vendors of these newer devices did away with USB Mass Storage, and made us use MTP instead, we've seen a lot of problems connecting. USB Mass Storage just plain worked.

When I went into the About in Settings, and then Software Update. I get this message. Unfortnately, Settings has stopped.

What has my Settings stopped, and then closes when I press OK?

What rom are you on? I'm thinking "Software Update" may force close like that when you are on custom roms..do any other settings force close?

Yeah, mine crashes too....
The other thing that crashes is when I go to menu/settings/sound/volume......when I click on "volume", it crashes.

What is a positive and negative points to install a custom rom when its going to crash? Would it be fine to go without one, and the same applies for a custom kernel like Lean Kernel? What's negative and positive about it?

Well, the positives of a custom rom is first, the bloatware is removed. And if some of it is still there, you can remove it if you want. Other positives include the different tweaks and mods that roms have. Even the kernels they come with can be tweaked in so many ways such as overclocking/underclocking, over/undervolting, different governors and schedulers etc. So much stuff to even type here

Other kernels provide different governors and offer fastcharging over usb, and battery saving tweaks etc..again, so much to type out

Some roms are more stable than others. Some roms have things that don't work.
Some roms are updated nightly. Others are updated as the dev posts updates....weeks/months etc.

So if you ask anyone what is the best rom/kernel combo? You will get alot of different answers and the best answer is---try some out for yourself and see what works for you and your device.

Sorry I did not get back sooner. Had some other things going on..

No, I don't use last.fm. In fact I have never used any of those kinds of music services. I suppose I'm showing my age. But the music I listen to comes from ripped CDs and/or downloaded MP3s from Amazon's music service..That's why I prefer a player that can ignore meta tags and play selections based on their file name and order in a folder.

Using custom ROMs can have its shortcomings, and sometimes there are things that don't work properly. The devs try to fix anything that they find malfunctioning if they can. But it's the price we pay for freedom from being totally controlled by phone vendors..

o.k..so after wiping cache/dalvik/data/factory reset and now /system....and then you flashed the rom and rebooted, but now it will not boot up? The screen is black?
Can you provide a link to the rom you are trying to flash?

CyanogenMod Downloads

10.0, it is the only stable on that link, and I rebooted first before the flash because I thought it would boot up, but I guess not.

Well, power off your phone or pull the battery.....boot back into recovery, wipe again and flash the rom
If all else fails you can restore your nandroid (you made a nandroid prior to flashing yes yes yes..tell me yes? )

Well I have an Outter Box case on my phone, and I had to take it into Verizon to put the case on because I didn't know how so I can't pull the battery.

I did made a backup in recovery, and after wiping /system and before reboot I checked under backup and restore and backups are no longer there due to wiping. What other recommendations would you have?

So you wiped your sd card? That is where the backups are stored...either on your internal sd card (phone) or your external sd card (if you have one installed).

Can you power off the phone at all without pulling the battery?
We need to shut off the phone in order to do the power/home/volume up to get into recovery.

Do you have an external sd card installed? And do you remember if you put the rom on the internal or external storage?

The phone is off but it's black and won't do anything. The SD thing, I saved to my phone from USB cable because I did not see SD listed under my computer, and yes, I have SD installed.

When you say your phone is off, do you mean the screen is off, or it's powered down---(off).

If it is powered down, try to boot into recovery. (home/power/volume up)

It's powered down and it won't boot into recovery or download mode and that's what I mean by it won't do anything.

O.k..so let me just review:
1. You were in recovery, wiped before a rom flash but rebooted before flashing the rom and now the phone is dead, as in, off, not powered on.
2. It will not charge.
3. It will not boot into recovery or download mode.

Are you trying to charge it via the computer or the wall charger?
Can you try a different usb cable to charge it?
When you do plug your phone in, the led light does not come on?

Sorry for all the questions but I just want to be clear as to where you are at.

I pulled the battery and now in recovery and went into restore I see no backups.
