Default Nandroid backup?

Guys, please excuse my ignorance on this matter, but i thought creating a nandroid backup was impossible due to not being able to put on a custom recovery like cwm or twrp?
I've seen a few of you fellas talk about making one. Is there a way?

It is possible to put on CWM or TWRP if your build is VRUAMDK...however if your build is VRUAME7 (i.e. updated) it currently blocks us from doing so. You can find out your build by going to settings->about phone

Yeah that's what i thought drewhill. I thought maybe i missed something and someone got around the ability to at least do a custom recovery because i saw in another thread, someone talking about making one... Being that this is the verizon variant thread, i was confused. Thanks man
