So the day is finally come! Sunday I get to upgrade my phone to the Droid. I'm looking over all the options so I can just be in and out as quick as possible.

Under the PDA/Smartphone Email option there is

-Email and Web For Smartphone
and
-Unlimited Data Usage

What's the difference between the two? I'm only looking to access my Google Mail accounts from the phone or via the web on the phone, I'm not doing any Outlook or Exchange syncing.

Get the cheapest one, $30 right? The difference is that the first plan, though it says is "unlimited" has a 5GB cap. Generally, this is thought to prevent against people using it to tether or something that requires massive bandwidth. But that lower data plan should be sufficient for app downloads, email, etc. You should be good with the cheapest data plan.

Email and Web For Smartphone is what you need. It doesn't have a 5GB cap i went over that last month. The only difference is the other one includes exchange support.

Exactly. The more expensive plan is mainly for corporate users. The 5GB limits is only for the mobile broadband service (or whatever they call tethering).

$29 unlimited. It's not just email and app dl, what about pandora, mediafly, a online radio, IHeartRadio, and the countless other streaming apps! Once Flash comes out 5GB will be a joke.

His point is that currently flash in not available on Android, so you have lower data usage because there is no need (or ability) to download additional data due to flash.

Flash IS coming to Android in the next few months (or sooner), and will result in higher data usage from browsing the web...

Ok, but everything else he mentioned is already out and 5GB has nothing to do with it. Once again the 5GB limit is only for official tethering. There is no limit for unlimited web/data.

Drop the 5GB crap. That wasnt anywhere in the question he was asking. How much does it cost in numbers for a phone with his specifications listed above? And now for mine. Four phones on a sigle contract and two of them need data plans. Anyone know how to make this work without breaking the wallet? We barely use 300 minutes but tons of texts (unlimited) and I use lots of data and soon to be more once we get two data plans. Help anybody?

Wow, way to hijack this thread, you could start your own thread if you wanted to, but anywho, lemme give this a shot...

So you have 4 phones, you want UL text, and 2 smartphone plans, you don't use "alot" of voice, and you want it all cheap...

Do you use your Family and Friends feature now? If not then no big deal, no brainer, pick the 700 select, and add the 2 smartphone data plans, done. Not cheap enough? I heard Sprint, Tmobile, and a few others could always use a few customers lol, and they may be cheaper too, especially since you won't be able to potentially use them nearly as much as you could use your VZW service.

Now if you do in fact use the F&F feature, this may be one reason why you don't use alot of voice minutes, that feature is available on the 1400 minute and up voice plans, so if you use that feature, ask yourself this,
"Self, how many minutes would we use w/out this feature, if all of those calls suddenly counted against us?"
If the answer is more than 700, then guess what, you need to be on the 1400 plan.

There is a 5GB SOFTCAP. This is well known among many sites and people. Go over it you might have trouble with Verizon nothing for sure than if you went over 5 with a tethering or broadband card though

Hey Nate, I work for VZW,
I have a Droid,
I have exceeded the "5G" limit easily w/ the droid, not tethering, just using the phone browser and it's apps etc..
I have also never heard of this, ever, I mean from VZW,
I have no idea what is "well known among many sites", means, but there is no soft cap.
I have not had any "trouble", for exceeding the 5 gig, this is because,


IT'S UNLIMITED DATA PERIOD.

Feel free to post a link to actual vzw info, if it exists, I would like to see it, it would be news to me.
I believe somewhere here, I did see posted the verbatum fine print of the SPDP, somewhere. I am sure it was somewhere on this forum, but yeah, I am always open to learning something new, so go ahead and post that I would like to see that.

Confirmed there is no cap on the lower data plan. Only difference is Exchange support or not like you guys said. Yay droid

I guarantee you Verizon monitors for abuse. Who knows what exactly it entails, but if I were to, say, pull 10GB a month on my phone for a year, the system would likely put up some red flags. The bottom line is the vast majority of users don't even come near 5GB a month so unlimited use really comes down to "fair and reasonable". But then again, Verizon may be very relaxed here based on their generous network capacity. I know for FIOS, people pull down crazy amounts of data per month with not a complaint from Verizon, but the all-fiber network is pretty forgiving. Cable is a different story in that it's delicately balanced. The same data usage has resulted in letters to customers because ultimately, the entire branch of the network suffers.

Danky is quite correct here. I am a 10-year wireless industry vet and have been dealing with Verizon for most of that time, and the $29.99 Smartphone data plan is in fact, unlimited. There is not a 5GB hard or soft cap. They can do this because it is pretty damn hard to exceed 5GB on a phone. Even a phone with sick apps and html browser and all the other bells and whistles.
There tends to be confusion on this because of the 5GB cap on Mobile Broadband and Mobile Broadband Connect (tethering) plans.

Apologies if hijacking this thread...I have a very simple question that I have gotten different answers from various Verizon reps.

My husband & I are purchasing the Droids today. My husbands biz partner has one and we will be doing alot of calendar scheduling (invites) between the 3 of us for work. (General Contractors, not Corporate)

Do we need the $29 or $44 plan? When we first started researching, we planned on the $29 plan, then I spoke to a rep. and he said I needed the $44 for that specific calendar option? lol/ For 2 weeks, I have called CS & been in different stores and I get a different answer everytime. Its 50-50 and frustrating.

What service do you use for calendaring? If it's Microsoft Exchange then I think he's correct. If it's Google Apps (for example) then he's incorrect, the lower priced plan will handle you fine.
