If you don't upgrade when you are 'due' you can just hold on to it 'til you are ready. I have two lines that are upgradeable and have been for a long while now. The upgrades don't expire.

Upgrade doesn't expire, VZW wants you to buy a new phone with a contract. You're upgrade date is based off 20 months from the last upgrade.
