Default How to add custom ringtones to Gmail synced contacts.

I've been getting annoyed at being unable to assign my ringtones to my gmail synced contacts. Something that was a non issue on my old faithful G1.

Samsung, it seems, has seen fit to screw with the contact management making it necessary to have a contact in the phone memory proper to assign a custom ringtone.

I have found a simple solution. Download Ringo Lite from the market place. It will allow you to assign ringtones to any contact on the phone in a really simple manner and the app is free. It has other features like assigning rings to sms messages and stuff but I don't care about that or need that. But for setting ringtones it works just dandy.

I'm glad it worked out for ya. It was one of those things I've been trying to figure out for a few days and finally found the answer. I'm glad I found the answer to this issue, I've seen a bunch of posts in various forums looking for an answer too. I don't want such a good phone to get dirted because samsung decided to mess with simple things. So I look for solutions.

This solves one problem I had with the contacts..

The other problem I have is my phone will not download the google contact groups I have defined.

It simply downloads ALL google contacts into one massive Google folder onto my phone. I do not wish to have every single person who I've ever sent an email to in my phone when I try to sort through my contacts.

I could just ignore this large google folder, if I could just figure out how do I set it so it downloads my google groups I defined? Essentially so my phone contacts matches EXACTLY how my gmail contacts are setup?

Well you could limit the contacts shown by only those with phone numbers. That cuts a lot down. I'm still working on the group thing myself. I'll post it when I find it.

Please let us know when you find out how to limit the amount of contacts that sync with the phone. Yesterday i pruned, after exporting all my contacts to my computer, about 300 of the 763 that were transfer to my phone. Im impressed on how fast the phone sync back up.

Default How do you assign ringtones to groups?

When I try to do this it tells me the group already exists when I go to save it.

I know this is old but I kind of had the same problem today and found another way to do it (well not the same)
what I thought at first , ok .. if it needs to have contacts on the phone to assign ringtones , then lemme just copy all my contacts to phone and let them link together , right ?
well .. looking around .. no copying ..
so I did this, open contacts
menu button -> more -> import/export -> Export to SD card

after it's done exporting

menu button -> more -> import/export -> export from SD card
and chose destination as phone, and if you have multiple backups , chose select multiple backups and check the one you want

after this is done

go to any contact -> edit
you'll find there are 2 tabs , google tab and phone tab
go to phone tab , and there is the ringtone drop down menu *yay*

if you already have linked contacts , it'll backup all the info in one slot (as it'll backup facebook's numbers , display pictures, all emails and such)
there was the issue of some stuff appearing twice (addresses for example)

not sure why I mentioned this , maybe I like showing off my geekness :P

I just discovered a workaround for adding ringtones to contacts on the Galaxy S without needing an App. OK, discover may be a stretch but I have not found any other site that has these steps.

Note that there are three types of contacts: SIMM, Phone and anything you sync from programs such as Outlook/Exchange. Apparently, the phone only supports custom ringtones on on "Phone Contacts". So if you want a special ringtone for any other contact it seems as if you are SOL but this is what I found works (sorry for providing such verbose directions):

1. Go to your Contacts list.
2. Go to "Menu", then "Create" and select a "Phone" Contact. Create a contact with the same name as the non-phone contact you want the custom ringtone for.
3. Add the same phone numbers to the Phone contact that are in your non-phone contact. It did not choke as I would have expected it to do having the same number twice in the system. I haven't personally tried this but I suppose that you can make multiple Phone Contacts - one for each number that you want a different ringtone on...
5. Add a personal ringtone to the Phone Contact and then save the contact.
6. Navigate to the non-phone contact and open it.
7. Pan down to the "Linked Contacts" section and click on it.
8. Select the "Add linked contacts" button.
9. Because the Phone contact has the same same, it should appear in a short list. Just add it to the linked contacts list and the rest is automatic. If it is not there, then select "Show all contacts" and find it.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Thumbs up

The OP, and other posts in this thread, are great tips and tricks for the Vibrant, so I've moved the thread to the Vibrant Tips and Tricks sub-forum.
