Yes, there is a real root.
First you need to run Revolutionary for S-Off.
Then you need to flash CWM for View.
Then you need to flash a .zip file to get root rights.
All on XDA and/or Revolutionary

Give me a sec.
XDA is not the easiest board to navigate.
I'll post the link to the guide shortly.

Revolutionary will flash the correct CWM to your View when you run it for the second time.
Note: don't get discouraged by the initial message "Failed! Go have some lemonade!" I got it yet when I ran it for the second time it said "you already have S-Off".

Disclaimer again.

Follow the instructions.
Install the HTC drivers.

Make sure you have USB debugging checked.
Make sure you provided the correct serial and HBOOT to the Revolutionary.
Make sure you've got the beta key from Revolutionary.
Make sure you run it from the DOS window.
Run "adb devices" to make sure your device is connected.
Good luck!

This is the method I used. It was quick, easy and worked like a charm. I've been using android phones since the htc G1 was released and thid is one of the easiest rooting methods I've seen.
