Default Sad Goodbye

Well, as much as it pains me, I have to give up the tablet. I knew it was coming, this is my business partners and I have been setting it up for him, which has made me want one that much more.

I do have a birthday coming up, but that is months away, so I will have to figure something else out. I can't just go buy one, had a hard enough time explaining the Denon AVR3311 to the wife, at least not yet.

Keep ur eye out. You might get lucky and get one for under 300 which would be an awesome buy.

i have seen them go as low as $150 used on ebay. with the lack of out of the box support for Flash and the Android Market, there are a lot of people who give up and sell them rather than tinkering with them to unlock their true potential.

You definitely need to find another one...funny how close this hits home, as I am still answering to my wife as to why I needed a $400 tablet.

I am still reeling from a $1200 receiver, $768 in new tools and will be purchasing a rifle soon. I am going to find it hard to fit the tablet in with all that.

On top of that she stills gives me grief over my Canon 5D MKII and that was a work related purchase two years ago!

Awww...well here's the plan. Go buy the rifle...and ask her nicely if you can go buy a gtablet with the rifle over your shoulder. I think she'll say yes.

Haha. jk don't do that.

I definitely don't have the "wife" problem you guys have. Mine is asking me why I want the G instead of the Xoom for my birthday..... Doesn't she understand that I like tinkering. That and I feel the Xoom is going to be overpriced for a few months, though I'm sure it will fall in line eventually.

I don't think the Xoom will ever fall inline with the G Tablet price.

I might sound crazy but I still think that the Xoom isn't overpriced. It's downright expensive but not overpriced compared to the Ipad or any other tablets. It's definitely a High end product from a notable manufacturer. I'm not saying that I will purchase it for that amount but I understand why it's priced that way.

well we can't agree on everything.

looking at the specs, i just can't see how the additional $420 over the g-tab is justified. yes, you get double the RAM, double the memory, and a better screen, but i honestly have had 0 issues with the 512 RAM on the g-tab, and i am nowhere close to filling the 16gb on the internal card (not to mention the 32gb external card), so memory is not a big deal either. sure, i would love a better screen, but that alone is certainly not worth the $400+ price jump.

as for 3g access... why would you not just tether the g-tab (or the xoom for that matter) to your phone instead of buying a device with it's own 3g radio and paying for an additional data plan?? that is the true beauty of the g-tab to me... no additional fees. i can use wi-fi at home/places with hotspots and wirelessly tether to my droid if i need 3g without ever paying a dime or locking myself into a contract.

also... the xoom will most likely (but not definitely) have a locked bootloader. if that is the case, then each device has one major strike in my book (sub-par screen on the g-tab, locked bootloader on the xoom), so price should be a push.

Lol. I know but technically we agree. We both think that the Gtab is superbly priced!
We are both happy with our Gtab which makes paying anything above what we paid for it seem somewhat insane.

However, I understand why Motorola priced it at $799. I never said I agreed or liked the pricing but I understand. Spec wise this tablet kills all tablets that our out today including the highest Ipad model which is currently at $829. This is above and beyond better than the Galaxy tab which sold for $600+ when it first launched. So I expected Moto to price it between those two tablets. Blame the Ipad and Galaxy tab for overpricing their tablets first...before blaming Moto. Like what my little brother used to say....HE STARTED IT!

I know we don't need more RAM, 3g, more memory, GPS, two better cameras, an HD display etc...no one really does but these are considered to be luxury specs right now which people pay when they purchase premium devices.

i will give you that one... compared to the ipad, it is a good deal. however, i have felt that the ipad was overpriced from the beginning (i guess they could charge whatever they wanted when they owned 100% of the market share), so i still can't justify that price on the Xoom. if the g-tablet wasn't floating around at an average of $400 less, i would probably be excited about the $799 price tag, but as is, that is just too high. the g-tab has done everything i need it to and more... not to mention that all of the functions that the xoom has over the g-tab are better served by the android phone in my pocket. who is walking around taking pictures with a tablet? why does a tablet need a 3g radio when you can tether to a phone? GPS would be nice, but once again... it's in my pocket. I can see how the price of the Xoom could be justified if you didn't already have an Android phone, but how many people are really in that situation?

Yeah, I know we and most people do not need all the bells and whistles of the Xoom. Justification is based on needs not wants so if you want all the bells and whistles...you're gonna have to pay. Just like on airplanes, there's a coach section and first class...people don't need the leather seats, the extra elbow room and whatever else is in first class because at the end of the day...that airplane lands and arrives at the same destination at the same time. My gtablet is as functional as the Xoom so though the extra specs are nice...I certainly don't need it.

So in terms of overprice vs expensive...I lean more on the expensive side but it's borderline overpriced!

Justification can be based on the fact that it has 3g, gps, better screen, more ram, Honeycomb, moto support, more accessories, etc. For the user that wants something to blow the ipad out of the water and doesn't know how or want to take the time to root the gtab much less monkey with making it work it may be alright. That combined with the fact that its $800 today to get the early takers but by august will be $600 makes it look real appealing. However I have an inner nerd (along with an inner cheap a$$) that makes the Gtab look really really appealing to me. If this was for my mom though there is no way she would put up with the Gtab (tethering, whats that?), there will definitely be a xoom or ipad sitting on her desk. Hopefully I'll love the Gtab but I don't think the Xoom is overpriced (at least not for everyone, for me it is). For the first few months its what I would expect and after that a price drop to $599 or a wifi only model for $599 would be expected.

I will never buy one that forces the contract. In my mind, 3g (or any mobile connection) is not a necessity. And will it be unlocked? Can we install VegaN or TNT on it? I would never buy an $800 toy - get me a laptop running win 7 pro with 3g instead. The gtablet was made for me!! I still need help tethering and no one will answer my post on that??

I agree with SamuraiBigEd!! GTab is the reason for this thread - Go out and buy your own (unless you have tons of $ laying around and then you can to 1 of 3 things, Xoom, ipad, or donate to me )

ps. sorry for the partial hijacking...

I feel like the G-Tab and the XOOM are for different demographics. The XOOM is clearly a device that is, out of the box, going to blow the doors off pretty much anything, including the iPad. The G-Tab, out of the box, isn't going to wow anybody. However, if you mod the G-Tab, it's going to blow away almost anything as well.

The XOOM really is a great tablet for those who just want to pay the extra money for the convenience of a near flawless OOB experience.

When I bought my G-Tab, I was looking for the ability to do very specific things. These things are not complicated and whatever tablet I bought was going to fullfill a specific niche in my life, which was laying on my couch, watching TV, surfing the internet, and playing simple games like Angry Birds without a clunky laptop on my lap. I knew I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something that was going to fulfill a small need.

Now here is where the reality of the G-Tab comes in. I work in IT and I always tell people when they ask me for advice on buying a computer that what they want to use their computer for today might not be all the want to use their computer for in six months or one year. You're paying hundreds of dollars for something so you don't want to go through the process of finding a new machine in six months or a year when you decide that you want to try that brand new game everybody is talking about because what you bought six months ago can't handle it.

So, when I was researching tablets, it met a couple of requirements I had. One, it had the HW. The HW in the G-Tablet is top notch. The Tegra 2 is the talk of the town right now in the mobile computing world. It has plenty of RAM and although 16gb is small by todays standards for storage, the microsd card slot allows you all the storage space you need for a marginal increase in cost. The HW won't have any problems handling whatever comes down the pipe in the next six months to a year.

The second aspect was the software that came on the G-Tab. This is very important, but not as much as the HW. The SW is something that can be easily replaced by the manufacturer, or by the MOD community if they work hard enough at it. I bought my G-Tab a week ago, so the decision for me was easy. There were already at least three solid ROMS for the G-Tab and root was easily obtained. I own a Droid Incredible with CWMOD installed and I also had an Eris I rooted as well. All of this was nothing new to me and I already knew what kind of quality the XDA community was going put out as far as support for the custom ROMS. It was a no brainer. The stock software became irrelevant in my decision making process. I can't say the same thing for the XOOM. I would bet any amount of money that it has a locked bootloader.

For $400 and nothing more than your own time in modifying the G-Tab to your own liking, it's a no brainer if you're looking for a tablet right this instant.

With Apple, the draw to paying the premium is the amazing app ecosystem. I have the 64gb ipod and luv the app store and stunningly good games. I will take my gtablet, iPod and Incredible to tether them both, over a $800 tablet. Heck, my gtablet and iPod together was $86 less than Zoom.

BTW, I luv the iPod, but prefer my Incredible over an iPhone- anyday.

Yep, I just saw that too:

Motorola - XOOM Tablet / NVIDIA Tegra Processor / 10.1" Display / 1GB Memory / 32GB Hard Drive - Licorice - 990000745

Best buy is notorious for setting their pre-release prices really high though, I guess it discourages people from wanting to get their hands on one immediately when they can't sell them yet. I bet it goes down once they are actually on shelves.

Hope so! Even though I don't plan to get one I would like to see it succeed in taking a chunk out of the iPad.

Looks like android is already starting to make a pretty big dent. 22% of the tablet market with only 1 "official" tablet released so far.

Here come the Android tablets- 22 percent market share already | ZDNet

Laughing at the Wife issues. A device that you have to hack to make work properly must be MUCH less expensive or nobody will buy it. The Xoom will come down in price once a bunch of these things are shipping. I am guessing $500 will get you a great dual core WIFI only tablet by the end of June.

I don't see that happening, at least not for 8-12 months, the manufacturers have us over a barrel and will charge what they see fit.

I will also have to disagree not until maybe christmas and $600 would be the price point.

I was all about the Xoom until I found out about the Gtab . Seems as if the Gtab is great for people like us , it doesn't have great manufacture support or advertising and is really not a great product out of the box but it's open customization that is available is great . And XDA seems to have adopted to it nicely .

Now instead of buying a Xoom I'll get a Gtab and pay for my flight to Vegas next month and then still have money left over

Yep. Even at $600 (maybe wifi-only price), I am still not too thrilled with the Xoom due to being locked down and no apparent USB host. Still $250 more than the gtablet. $800 and a required one month data plan is pure crazy. I guess VZW will figure this out real quick with low sales.

This is one area where TMobile is nice. Just pull the sim from your phone and plop it in the tablet. Shame Tmo coverage sucks real bad in Kentucky.

The gtab is definitely a bargain tab. As I said before, it'll be evident when all the other tabs come out especially the mainstream tablets.

Xoom- $800+ $600+ for wifi only.
HTC Flyer- $700+ (that's the rumor)
Samsung Galaxy tab 2- $600+ (that's my guess and it's very optimistic)
LG G-Slate and Asus - Both don't have prices yet but I'm a little scare what they'll be priced at based on how Moto, HTC, and Samsung are pricing their tablets.

So the Gtablet at around $400+ at it's highest is ok. The Gtablet doesn't excel at anything but at least it can do almost anything.
People should be at least satisfied for what they get for the price. It fills my time well having the gtablet. I'm not clamoring or having seizures waiting for a tablet replacement.
