I know I had some CA Speakers too and those don't work. It doesn't work on any special speakers (if you have a makeup box that plays music, or a teddy bear, etc.).

I have the same problem, though not with earphones, just with FM transmitter and car stereo aux in. Other phones by the same manufacturer also suffer from this problem. You can create a ground loop adapter cable to trick the phone into activating the headphone jack. See post #5 in this thread:
playing music out of the headphone jack

Problem solved for $1.69.
3.5mm Earphone Adapter Cable with mic for iPhone | eBay

Plug it in, press the button, phone switches on headphone jack until you unplug it. The button is supposed to act as a Send/End button but I don't care, I'm just glad it works to activate the headphone jack.

Now not only can I use my car stereo to listen to music from my phone, I can also use it to crank the volume on a conversation...previously I've had to turn it on speakerphone and hold it up to my ear like it's not on speakerphone and still couldn't hear over wind/engine noise.

Might want to get a different one than I got, though. The mic on it is really awful. It's still worth trying ones on eBay that are a couple bucks IMO.

I haven't had an issue with the headphone jack other than random cracking and popping sounds while I'm listening to music. It tends to do it when the screen is lit up and also sometimes when my phone is doing a lot of downloading/uploading via 3G. At least I think this is whats going on. When I lock my screen and let the phone sit for a minute the cracking and popping stops. Has anyone else had this issue?

My Belkin FM adapter and my ~$40 bodyglove earbuds work, however my no-name headphones don't. I also tried my friend's phones from Amazon (no brand), didn't work either. Not sure why. Based on my experience though higher quality/more expensive headphones have a better chance of working out of the gate.

Threadbump reminds me: The adapter I bought on eBay frayed...don't buy the one I bought.

I haven't had any earbuds fail to work, even dollar store ones.

Update: Today I accidentally discovered an FM transmitter that works. It's a generic one, no brand name but merely a model number WT-601N. Signal was pretty decent relative to other FM transmitters but I remember the last time I tried this model (years ago) I did not have the same opinion.
