Say goodbie to netflix say goodbie to downloading games and updating them wake up people 2.gb is nothing. Virgins network was dog slow already this will only further cripple there network.
Here at Virgin Mobile, our mission is to deliver an outstanding customer experience. Sometimes that
means making difficult choices in order to provide the best possible service to the greatest number of customers.
To make sure we can keep offering our Beyond Talk Plans at such great prices, we're putting a data speed reduction in place for anyone who uses over 2.5GB of data in a month.
How will it work?
Starting March 23, 2012, if you use over 2.5GB of data in a month on your Beyond Talk Plan:
Data speeds may be reduced to 256Kbps or below for the rest of your month. During this time,
you may experience slower page loads and file downloads and lags in streaming media.
If data speeds are reduced, they will return to normal as soon as your next plan month starts.
If you'd rather not wait for your new month to start, you can restart your plan immediately through
My Account.
Will it affect me?
Based on your activity for your last plan month ending in December, you shouldn't be affected.
If you continue to use the same amount of data as you did in your last plan month, you should not see
your data speeds reduced. Just to give you an idea, in order to hit 2.5GB, it's about 400,000 Mobile
Internet page views, about 90,000(!) emails (without attachments), 91 hours of streaming music
or 20 hours of video clips*.
This will not affect your ability to text or make calls with your phone.
How will I know if my data speeds have been reduced?
If you reach 2.5GB of data in a month, you will receive a text message letting you know your data speeds
will be reduced for the rest of your plan month.
By putting this data speed reduction in place, we're making sure we can deliver the same quality service
you've come to expect from Virgin Mobile. We hope you understand.
Thank you.
Virgin Mobile
The tension of waiting for this message is KILLING ME!!! ARGH!
....OK, not really.
I'm not particularly happy with this, but considering every other company except Sprint already did this I'm not terribly surprised, especially since most other prepaids have had this implemented longer.
Though as was mentioned, if these stats are accurate I should be fine.
Still no message though. Waiting, waiting, waiting.......

IKR... I'm still waiting more an email or a text or anything...
Virgin has now joined the suck group. The only good thing they had was the unlimited internet wich was 3g slow and now capped at 2.5 gb wich is nothing 3 movies. Well time to cancel and go back to tmobiles 5gb prepaid plan.
Thanks, this will free up some data bandwith for the rest of us!

I am not too concerned with this, seeing that I monitor my data usage and rarely ever go above the "2 gig" limit. I really don't see a need for them to throttle data, as it isn't really costing them much, but it does choke the system down a bit. My service has never been phenominal, but it seems to work fine when I need it.
sorry about ur speeds, we have VM to thank for dumping android phones during BF, now data usage is overloaded, they cant keep up with all the phones... THANKS VIRGIN MOBILE
I wouldnt doubt VM users are low priority when it comes to sharing Sprint's 3G data.

If anyone is coming anywhere near that much, then they need to use a PC and legally connect to an ISP. Mobile Carriers are not the same as an ISP. This is one of the reasons some mobile carriers are placing these restrictions... because people treat them like they were an ISP.

And this is why I am seriously considering switching to T-mobile for $5 more a month.
Why is every so surprised? They've been talking about this for a while, they were gonna start throttling in October, 2011, but put it off til this year. Just use less data and if your using it to tether then that's probably why you are using so much data.

Well, I got the email today as well. They must be sending it out to everyone because I get nowhere close to 1gb, let alone 2.5gb. They probably want to make sure that every customer knows so they don't get a ton of complaints about not notifying people when it happens.

I got a text from VM today about throttling on anything above 2.5Gigs of usage. I don't think I will be affected by this change, due to the fact that I rarely go over 1 gig of data. The most I've hit is 1.8 gig and that was running Pandora nearly all the time at work.
Wouldn't you go f'in blind using and looking at all that data? I know plenty of other Android users with fancier phones with bigger displays and even if I had say, a Photon, I wouldn't sit around watching netflix on it. Come on. I have no issues with this policy because I have HOME INTERNET SERVICE and I like my 20/20 vision. I use the phone for data a lot and still never even come close to 2.5GB. And I feel like the 900-1.3 down speed I reliably get is more than fair (and a far cry from the speeds I got with TMobile's Black Berry service). As a Scotsman once said: "Ya dun hafta cry aboot it!"

VM capping "unlimited" usage?
Did anyone else get a text/email from VM describing the new "caps" they are placing on broadband usage? I got a message saying that when we hit 2.5mb usage (something like that), they will slow our speeds down to 246k for the rest of our plan month...
^I agree completely, hiwatt. I can barely stand watching video on my laptop, even. I don't know how people can stand doing it on a phone. I foresee an enormous demand for more optometrists/ophthalmologists in the near future...
Cap means, that's all you get, done.
Throttle means they just slow you down once you hit a a certain amount. It''s still unlimited, just slower once you hit that mark.

LMAO. There are so many merged threads in here that this topic now makes exactly as much sense as it should.
To recap:
This should not come as a surprise to anyone; VM has been throwing this around since last summer, if not earlier.
If it does come as a surprise to you, VM has now given you 2 months advance warning so you can decide what you're going to do.
If you're leaving VM, all the best to you.
If you're not leaving VM, stop complaining, don't tether (steal), don't watch 50,000 movies/videos, or whatever the heck else people are doing that uses so much data, and the throttling won't affect you.
The 3% of VM customers who abused this very reasonable and quite generous plan they offered up to this point are how we got here.
/thread? (probably not)
The Following User Says Thank You to melim For This Useful Post:
In the near future, there will be no unlimited data on any carrier. You will have to purchase the gigs you want. Sure we can blame the data hogs out there but more and more people are going to be using more and more bandwidth as we continue into the future.
In this always connected world were people surf the web for hrs a day, stream radio for 2-8 hrs, watch and even download HD videos it is only a matter of time before unlimited goes the way of the dodo bird.
VM has given me enough time to download some kind of usage app to see what I am using. Personally, I might stream radio for a few hrs a day, but Im not a heavy video watcher, so I think this will not affect me. If it does, I will curtail my usage since $25/mo is a remarkable bargain imo. Most of my friends and colleagues are paying $60-100/mo.
The Following User Says Thank You to musick For This Useful Post:
Data caps should roll forward like mins though if they are gonna get all fussey over it.
They are not putting in data caps, they are throttling data after 2.5gb as has been said in the thread at least once. A cap would mean if you hit 2.5gb you are done for the month. Throttle just means the speed of your connection will be slowed.

I go over 2.5 gigs from movies and music that I listen to when I'm not at home. I have home Internet. I live in New York and commute via train so I stream or download for the times when I'm out and about.
I got an e-mail from VM saying I can only use now 2.5GB a day. If I use that up in a day I'll get a text message from VM saying I've gone over my limit for the day and my download speed will not be the same. Based on VM's records on my daily usage I will be affected. ARG what about the "Unlimited" plan!?!?! I have a limited internet on my home computer so I use my phone for extra internet access. Is there anything that can be done?

yes and it should roll forward, so if you only use 1 gig one month, you can use 4 gigs the next month before you get throttled and so fourth. and you can roll it forward for up to 1 year then it starts all over.

You get 2.5 gb per month at full 3G speeds, then if you hit that, they'll throttle your speed to 256 kbps or lower until your new month starts. I rarely get 256 kbps anyway, so it won't affect me much. They probably put this on place because of people tethering and abusing the system.
