Just got a text message from VM. If you upgrade now to a new 2012 phone your monthly goes to $35 minimum. I was a holdout on their $25 plan and was going to upgrade. Now it looks like I am going to T-Mobile.

What's the deal with this? I am on a 25$ plan right now, so if I get a new phone they'll kick me off it? I'm about to go to T-Mobile for their prepay if VM doesn't get a decent mid-range phone

Wow. I was paying $25 a month through VM and just upgraded to a Triumph a week ago. I hope i made the cut. I better watch my account and see if they upped it to $35.

this is one way they can get rid of the grandfather clause now they can hike the price almost across the board every one gets a new device sooner or later

Overall, the pre-paids play a lot more fair and Virgin Mobile USA has been more than fair here. If you think about it, this is pre-paid. We're not signing a contract and that means we don't get the consumer side contract benefits either. VM was under no obligation to let us keep our $25 dollar plans. Even now, they aren't forcing you into a new plan unless you go beyond their current offering. I don't think that's a bad deal.
Also, keep in mind that this likely means that there won't be any additional fees or rate increases for WiMax on the Evo V when it hits. I can't see them pulling multiple moves like this back to back. They are competing with T-Mobile and Straight Talk hard core right now.
It's only phones that are released May 2012 and after, not necessarily all phone changes. So as I interpret it, you can change to the Triumph at any time. It's only a problem if you switch to any of the (as yet unannounced) may releases on.
I'm guessing will see the One V in May and the Evo V anywhere from May to July.

Actually VM was obligated to let you keep the $25 plan under the grandfather clause.
Another thing the MT is a 2011 phone and always will be no matter what year it is. The price increase actually makes sense if VM is getting WiMAX and the One V/ Evo 3D.

Well, that's why pre-paid is AWESOME. All the costs are straight forward (none are hidden) and in some cases you can keep your phones. Consequently, we're starting to get true competition. If TM is cheaper and you choose them, go for it! More power to you! Consequently, VM has REAL concern that raising prices will cause loss of customers since no one is on contracts and getting new phones is a lot cheaper.
Personally, 100 minutes isn't enough for me so I'll stick with Virgin since I can still get a decent phone (Evo V).

well for this they are allowed to raise the price of everyone's plan who buys a new phone since technically it's resetting the plan, although as if you don't buy a 2012 phone and have the grandfathered plan you should still keep it. (like upgrading from the OV to the MT for example). When the price hike first started they couldn't raise anyone's plan price since they would be breaking the grandfather clause and since they started it after the MT's release they can't raise your plan rate. Now since they are obviously bringing new phones in they can break the GC by stating that your plan price will increase with a 2012 phone. I believe that's how it all works out. I mean if someone knows law better than me correct me if I am wrong .

I don't think I would even switch from a Triumph to the HTC One V. Both have 1 GHz processors and 512 MB RAM, and the Triumph has the screen size advantage (4.1 vs 3.7).

I SURE AS HELL WOULD! lol, actually, I would have to "test drive" one. I kinda have second thoughts about my Triumph (after it surviving a fall I thought no phone would survive.), and am considering just getting a new one off the shelf (from Best Buy, I have the protection plan. )

Why did you post this once in the VM forum and then post it again saying this is what I posted in the VM forum. What do you work for VM if not this is a for sure fire way to make people think that you might.

To me, this is totally worth it for an EVO 3D. If the rumors are untrue, I will move to another network.
I do have a few questions about Straight Talk/T-Mobile though. Are these services 3G? I know along time ago, they were not 3G or only 3G up to xxMB of data. Is anyone familiar with these plans?

Not sure about Straight Talk, but T-mo is 3g (well advanced 3g or as they call it 4g). depending on the plan you get you can get up to 5gb of 4g a month then if you go over that limit you are brought down to 2g speeds.

I have no problem with it, now that I have a tablet too, my smart phone is more of just a phone now or a relay station for data. ill keep it as long as I can for $25 a month unlimited.

What I meant is that as much I like the get the Galaxy Nexus, the S3 is being announced at the Samsung Unpacked Event on May 3rd. Virgin Mobile USA is just screwing themselves in the long run.
Im think about switching to Sim ST too.. I can get most any unlock phone for it. and $45 unlimited everything is a great deal. but can't really trust any phone companies, they could raise their prices plans anytime. eitherway, we just have to pay a little more a littleless somehow. with simcards are better I think.
