There was an announcement that the Samsung Galaxy S III, (16GB, $199.99; 32GB, $249), is/will be with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and US Cellular. Any idea when/if it makes its way to Virgin Mobile U.S.?

Probably about 5 years from now. Prepaid does not get brand new phones.

Not anytime soon. The new phones that Virgin and Boost got are from last year.

I didn't realize that the HTC EVO 3D and iPhone 4s were already 5 years old. Time sure passes by quickly, doesn't it?

I doubt we will see those Galaxy or Nexus phones any time soon. Even if they do bring one of those phones to VM USA, expect to pay top dollar for it. I'm thinking they would put it on Boost before they put it on VM USA.

It'll probably be 5 years until VM has LTE if it ever does. They are unlikely to put a high end LTE phone on VM without support for it.

If they had LTE and top of the line phones like the S3, they'd lose a lot of their contract accounts. That's one of the perks of signing a contract, getting the latest and greatest.

Sprint's wholesale agreement with Clearwire runs through 2015, so LTE is likely to come to VM and Boost customers sometime before then (like July 2014?). It will be a while before we get LTE on VM, but I think five years is too long.

Sprint has declared that it's no longer Clearwire's majority owner in a move designed to shield the carrier should the worst happen to its troubled bedfellow. While Big Yellow is planning to supplement its own LTE network with Clearwire's TD-LTE backbone, it's looked to distance itself on the business side from a company that finds it very hard to make money -- requiring handouts from Sprint just to stay afloat.

Actually the contract expires in 2013 with a 2 year extension at the end. However since Sprint is still depending on ClearWire for it's LTE buildout depending on how that goes and how much money Virgin is making on WiMAX devices they may still stick with it for awhile longer. It's a cheap and mature technology. If it's making money there's little incentive to migrate all of Boost and Virgin customers to LTE. I actually think that Sprint will get rid of the overpriced Virgin name and bring us in as it's own branded prepaid service before 2015. Doesn't make fiscal sense to have the overlap and redundancy from running 2 mvno's.

I know this is not a total reliable source of information but I literally just got off the phone with VM USA customer service and asked is the galaxy S2 is coming to VM soon? Get this, he corrected me and said its not the S2 that's coming...its the S3 on November 30th in time for x-mas holidays! He said the announcement will be on the website within a wee or two...OMG!!!

So the guy you last spoke with that confirmed the S2 was coming either lied or didn't know what he was talking about. Why would we then trust another rep that tells you the S3 is coming?

I'll believe it when I see it.

I guess the "new" S2 running gingerbread. Look at the Google Search bar. That's the one from GB. The ICS bar is clear and the JB bar is gray. Looks to me like a photoshopped pic.

Boost Mobile just got this phone (S2) last month, so it is highly doubtful that VM USA will be offering the phone until Boost has made all of the cash from it they can.

Although weirder things have happened, I would not expect it on VM USA anytime soon.

The fact that it's not branded is also a dead giveaway I would think.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Sprint said the arrangement will give it control of 50.8 percent of Clearwire.
Allegedly, one of the terms of Sprint's deal with Softbank is that Sprint would purchase Clearwire -- if I recall correctly, they want to be able to use the Clearwire towers and use them for LTE, giving Sprint users more LTE bandwidth in Clearwire cities.

This is slightly off topic but does that mean Clearwire customers will get LTE as well?

That is my understanding, that Clearwire will go through a transition to LTE and their customers (like Sprint's) will all eventually be upgraded to LTE receivers before they turn off WiMax.

Well, T-Mobile essentially has this offer: Walmart charges $329 for a T-Mobile Prepaid Galaxy S2 but that includes a $30 T-Mobile prepaid card -- meaning you are paying $299 ($369-70) for the phone.

If anything you should never trust a CS representative.

The customer support you spoke with is not privy to information like that. They are not even related to VM USA other than to be hired from Sprint to offer customer support with the service and current phones. Essentially, you are not speaking directly to VM USA, but to an outside service hired by Sprint.

If the S3 ever came to Virgin it'd cost at least $600 prepaid. Considering Virgin's network that's an awfully fast phone on an even more awfully slow network.
