Default Rooting and Flashing WCX Sense ATT Vivid ICS 3.6 Initial Release

Ok kiddies...I finally succeeded! After much heartache and sorrow, flip flopping around as to whether or not root, and general discontent with a stock ICS update(that Woodsy and Rico have heard about to no end....)...I finally decided to root. After lots of trial and error, and lots of help from everyone at www.wcxxperia-nce.com for walking me through the process. The process is mildly complicated, and not exactly beginner level...but having lots of experience flashing rom's on my Inspire I was somewhere in the middle. So far, this ROM is super smooth...it is much faster, and very stable. He is working on a generic ROM that is competely ATT free, and has Wifi Hotspot Tethering unlocked. Can't wait!

All in all I am super happy with the rom, and now am super comfortable with the process required to set up the phone to flash. I'm getting ready to start compiling comprehensive "Work Instructions" on how to flash it. Anybody interested??

Its pretty comprehensive, but not difficult...

Rooting Instructions
Hasoon2000 created his Vivid All-In-One Kit V1.2 and posted it on XDA. The link to the download is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?bxfd2j5ia6yfxgu Download this kit to handle all your rooting needs. This kit is pretty much fool proof. If you follow the instructions and do the steps in order, you will be fine! USB Debugging must be enabled. From the home screen TAP settings, TAP develop options, TAP USB Debugging
You should take care when getting the token ID that you only highlight the areas that are clearly marked by HTC’s posted example…otherwise it will not work. Once you have completed steps 1 through 6, you will click the PermRoot button in the lower right corner of the interface. After you follow the prompts, your phone will be rooted, and ready to proceed to the next step.

Flashing WCX Sense ATT Vivid ICS 3.6 Initial Release
**The following work instructions only apply to flashing WildChild’s ICS ROM**
First you have to register at www.wcxxperia-nce.com
Once you have registered, the HTC Vivid Section becomes visible to you. In the original post click the dedicated link for WCX_Sense_ATT_Vivid_ICS_3_6.zip. Save this file to your workstation.
With your phone connected to your workstation with a MicroUSB comm cable, set your phone to “Disk Drive”. Take a copy of the .zip file and put it on the base directory of your internal storage.
Remove the battery. Re-insert battery. Hold Vol-Down and Power buttons until phone boots into HBoot. Connect USB to phone. Highlight FastBoot, and push power. The screen will read FastBoot USB in red letters. In Hasoon 2000’s All-In-One kit, click “Relock Bootloader” When device has finished rebooting, set it to “disk drive” again.
Open the ROM .zip file on your computer, and copy the PH39IMG.zip file to base folder of the SD Card.
Remove the battery. Re-insert the battery. Hold down Vol-Down and Power until device boots into HBOOT. The phone will automatically find the PH39IMG.zip and automatically start flashing the new HBoot.img. The phone will then shut completely and abruptly off. Do not panic. Hold down power and vol-down to re-enter Hboot. Follow the prompts, and let HBoot finish flashing itself. Reboot System.
Connect device to your workstation via USB cable, and ensure that USB Debugging is enabled. Using Hasoon 2000’s tool again, and Unlock the Bootloader again.
**The following steps require the use of Android SDK**
Android SDK can be found here: http://dl.google.com/android/installer_r16-windows.exe
In the ROM .zip file copy the Boot.img and WCXRecover.img files. If SDK is installed properly, paste the files to C:\SDK\platform-tools on your workstation.
Remove device battery. Re-insert battery. Hold Vol-Down and Power until phone reboots into HBoot. Highlight Fastboot and press Power. Connect USB Comm cable. The screen will again display Fastboot USB in red.
Go back to your Windows Explorer. Navigate to: C:\SDK\platform-tools . In an empty portion of the window, Right-Click WHILE pressing the shift key. Click “Open command window here”.
In the prompt type:
fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img
press Enter(you’ll see it send, then write, then finish)
When that has finished running successfully, in the prompt type:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
press Enter(you’ll see it send, then write, then finish)
Now, on your phone, highlight bootloader then press Power. Navigate to recovery and press Power. Once recovery starts, choose Wipe. Wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, system, and factory reset. Choose Return, Choose Flash zip menu, Navigate to the ROM, and install. Once ROM installs, reboot the system.
**This section is regarding setup of your new WCX ROM**

Setup your phone as you would if it were brand new. Set up all accounts/email/and apps. DO NOT use Titanium Backup as it re-installs system data that can put you in a bad spot. Once you have completely set up your rom….Reboot 3 times, to allow the ROM to settle in properly.
Remove Battery. Re-insert battery. Hold Power and Vol-Down until phone boots to HBoot. Navigate to Recovery and press Power. Navigate to Backup/Restore and press Power. Navigate to nand backup and press Power. Navigate to Perform Backup and press power. Press Power again when prompted to begin Nandroid backup.
When the Nandroid backup is complete select Return until you see the option to Reboot System Now.
Reboot and enjoy!!!

The previous post only pertains to flashing WCX...not other roms...I have some people working on cleaning up the verbage so as to enhance continuity, but the directions have been briefly looked over by the developer and given the stamp of approval...

You might want to give a mod here a shout out to get this recognized more.
He has started a root guide at the link for the vivid.
But it needs updated.

Well...I feel like a complete ass. I was using my phone as my sd card reader and was prepping one card i have for the update to this Rom. In the midst of that I accidentally flashed the PH39IMG.zip file before getting the rom on my phones internal card. Now, all i can manage to do is go into hboot. Trying to power the phone normally just results in first going to htc screen then dark...
please any advice would be really appreciated.

chall80,
Thanks. I was up late trying to do this and just wasnt reading the instructions properly. Went to sleep, woke up and figured that out in the first 5 minutes! I got the Rom up and running and seems sweet so far. Thanks for the tutorial you put together. Very easy to follow, unless your being illiterate like i was! thanks again for your time. Peace

Default Mms issues

Anybody having issues with MMS? I'm receiving messages, just no pictures displayed. Phone refuses to download the images and it won't send either. I've checked the APN and its entered exactly how the file instructs to. Any ideas? Texts works fine.

Sounds like a bad APN setting.
Im not really sure on rooted devices if the apn is the same but i believe these are the settings by default using AT&T.

APN Settings for AT&T for Android phones

For Android phones like Samsung Galaxy S2 and other Samsung Galaxy Series, HTC Inspire, HTC Vivid, LG Optimus and its series of mobiles, the apn settings is below.Set your apn settings manually by following this pattern below. Click ‘Save’ once you’re done.
Editing your at&t APN settings with the data below. Go to your Android Home Screen and tap Menu then Settings and go to Wireless and Networks then click APN (Access Point Name). Edit your stored data and make them like this:
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: (leave it blank)
Port: (leave it blank)
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Server: (leave it blank)
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410 (or either be 310, 41 or 15)

I'll be jumping on this ROM when I get a couple hours to play with my phone. Not overly impressed with ICS so far although I do like the face recognition to keep my kids off the phone.

Default Wifi Problems

Anybody else having wifi problems?

Wifi worked fine with the generic build, but doesn't on the 3.6.

Any tips appreciated.

Update. Just found the answer, or should I say cause, which is that you need to use the PH39IMG and Boot.img that comes in the WCX_Sense_ATT zip file that you plan to flash, and not ones you may have used earlier.

Apologies for noobness

All in all I am super happy with the rom, and now am super comfortable with the process required to set up the phone to flash. I'm getting ready to start compiling comprehensive "Work Instructions" on how to flash it. Anybody interested??[/QUOTE]

I am very interested because I have had so much trouble rooting my vivid. I recently unlocked bootloader and rooted an htc chacha/status with great success, but I have not had the same results with the vivid using the same method. As far as I have gotten is unlocking the bootloader on the vivid, but have had no success rooting it. I would really love detailed instructions on the vivid from bootloader unlock to rooting, even though the bootloader is already unlocked. I just need to know where to go from here. And a detailed guide would be the ticket. I tried to follow the video, but I wasnt able to make out the folders and files in the video. Any help would be much appreciated. Once I get it rooted, I will then experiment with the ROMS. But for now, I just want root. I have tried the hasoon tool, but when I clicked perm root, it rebooted and gave me a red exclamation in a triangle. Please, Please, Please help. You can email me the detailed instructions.

Thanks in advance.

I dont really know who to say thank you too, becasue I used various posts to get it done but mostly WCXWildChild and chall80. I finally was able to gather the information I needed from the doc and video to get wild child installed. So Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you! It is so much faster now. It even boots up faster now and does every thing faster. SWEET!

Cool It's a dream

You have to admit that All-in-One is incredible. The only problem I have had is that the wifi still isn't working after trying several different kernels and a couple of different ROMs that are out there.

I think i am just going to create a custom JellyBean ROM and call it a day, unless one of you have figured out a quicker fix.

Default My first time rooting

It took me over eight hours and three tries, but I finished it successfully and it's running great! I can't say enough about this rom that includes the wireless tethering feature. It's smooth, stable, and fantastic.

The rooting process to load any rom isn't a job I would call easy. I am glad that I have as much experience with computers that helped me understand some of the things that I was attempting. I had a problem with a driver that was in the wrong location and was able to place a copy of the missing file in a addressable location and complete the process.

Overall, I would highly recommend the WCX rom to anyone. It runs great, is faster, and includes the tethering that I loved on my Nexus One.
