Default [GPL] At long last Overclock your Vortex

Note: Requires install via my custom recovery.

Kernel Changes:
Overclocking up to 864mhz see notes below
Interactive and Smartass governers
Tun & cifs modules.
Support for Ext4 filesystem
BFQ as default I/O scheduler

Overclocking Notes:
Not all phones can OC and can handle the same speeds. Your phone is unique. Some can go up to 864mhz stable some can only do 748mhz and some can't at all.

Overclocking must be done with setcpu. After each boot/reboot the max is set to 600mhz to keep you from getting in a boot loop with an unstable speed for your device. To change it after reboot you must move the slider in setcpu to get the overclock freq to set above 600mhz.

My GPL Kernel Source

Please consider a donation for the custom recovery and overclock kernel if you haven't donated (link is in my signature). This keeps the wife happy/off my back and allows me development time

signed_vortex_oc.zip

Total Donations: $0

Rom makers please do not include this in rom but refer users to this post to download. That way I can control kernel issues (if any) and users will have most up to date version.

I'm having one issue: I cannot launch the Connectivity to set how the USB connection is to be used (charging only, mass storage, etc).

When I try to launch it, it says:

The application Settings (process com.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

Thanks!

Its definately a rom issue. Nothing regarding the usb gadget drivers were changed.

I know that the breakneck mod works fine, but until he releases a ROM that is 2.2.1 and allows OC'ing beyond 600, I guess this will have to do.

I can at least get into the shell via ADB, but it would be nice to also do drag and drop if I wanted to switch to mass-storage mode.

Any idea if/when this might get fixed?

This is not a kernel issue its a rom issue. Nothing to fix here. Just tested on stock phone both 2.2 & 2.2.1 with only kernel installed and all usb fuctions & connectivity & pull down usb mount menu worked as expected. You might want to try a full wipe in recovery for your current rom and then contact the rom maker for a bug report if wipe doesnt fix it.

Question then is, this wasn't a ROM image correct? Just a kernel patch that I applied? So, in other words, I'm still using the LightningC rom and what you provided just enables the kernel to allow us to OC?

If so, then I now understand what you were saying and I'll contact the LightningC author.

Thanks!

This replaced the original kernel with my new one that is overclocking capable among other things. Other than that the rom and all settings etc are the same.

Thanks! That makes total sense now with what you were saying.

Appreciate the help and the OC kernel! I love it. Angry Birds runs SO much better for me now!

I am stable without any issues at all at 768, 787 little issues with rebooting and anything above that automatic crash. Overall 768 seems to be fairly faster than the original 600mhz. Thank you very much for the kernel! if you need any feedback on my how my phone is handling the kernel let me know via email.

This kernel works great with my Vortex. I can OC @ 768 stable, anything more causes lockups and reboot.

I am very stable without any issues at all at 768 to 787 ...... Benchmark with quadrant is over 1000 points now, I am running LightningC Rom and so far with this overclocking ability I am very happy. It sure beats the stock rom and settings..... Still not sure why I cant use connectivity though either.... Any Ideas on whats wrong, I don't see any new updateds for lightningC rom to fix this issue.

Default Anyone still here? Question...

Hi everyone,

Stuck with a Vortex until March 2013, so decided to root to squeeze more out of it. I don't plan on running any custom ROMs, but this OC possibility is definitely catching my attention.

Problem is, I'm not sure what is the best way to install this kernel. I've tried ROM Manager and Kernel Manager, but neither offer the Vortex model, and after doing some research, I don't even want to risk using the varous Optimus models they offer due to the number of brick threads I've seen.

Now I'm seeing stuff about nandroid backups, which seems like a good idea if I'm going to be tinkering with the inner workings of the phone.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated.

Running 2.2.2 Thanks!

Default Got it working!

Hi Everyone,

Update, got it all working. It was all there, I just had to piece it all together properly.

I have SetCPU installed and have it set to ~760, since that seems to be what most people say is stable.

Now just waiting until I have time to test out some processor intensive games....... which, for this phone, shouldn't take long to find

Thanks Kappacat for responding via PM.

Default overclocking vortex

what are the steps u used to overclock the Vortex 2.2.2? Has it been stable in the OC state? What games are a good test of the phone?

Hi Chino, sorry for the delay in response.

I got your PM but I want to post in this forum in case others come looking for help.

At what stage in the root game are you at? Have you rooted using Gingerbreak yet? That's what worked for me for 2.2.2

Custom recovery that worked was Amon Ra, I'll see if I can find links.

BEFORE CONTINUING, MAKE SURE YOU RUN A NANDROID BACKUP. As always, no one is responsible for bricking your phone except you. It's as easy as booting into recovery and then following the backup options. My backups are usually less than 500 mb, make sure you have space on your SD Card.

Once you have those 2 done, find the signed_vortex_oc.zip file and save it somewhere on your SD card (put it in a folder), boot into recovery, then there should be an option for "Flash zip menu". Find the zip file, select it, follow the prompts.

Afterwards, find an overclocking application, SetCPU is working great for me. Once you have it installed, it's as easy as moving the slide bar to how much power you want to give it. I have mine set to start on bootup at 760 mhz, have not had an issue with anything locking up.

There is still a little slowdown in the later levels of Angry Birds, but I am satisfied overall. Besides, you can always just go in, give it more power, run the game, then bring it back down after you are done playing.

Setcpu is also a nice application to use because you can make a safemode zip in case you overclock too high and get stuck in a bootloop. I'd recommend it.
