Default Root required to install Kernel

Hey fellas...

after years of jailbreaking iPhones, I've moved to the HTC One and have a couple questions...

I'd like to install a custom kernel, and was curious if doing so required to me to..

1. install a custom recovery
2. Root the device.

Then, if rooted, is can I unroot yet still ahve the same kernel?

Specifically i'm looking at this kernel...
[Kernel][Oct21][Sense5.5 & GPe]teaMSeven2.2.8[Flick2Wake|TapWake|BLN|Hotplug|OC|OTG|Zoe|Pano360] - xda-developers

Thanks!
-A

htc has many write protections in place. you will need to gain s-off(basically means "secirity off" in order to make any file system changes stick, sicne verizon has opted to keep the deivce off the officially htcdev unlock list.

you would need to install a recovery to install the kernel. at that point, you could replace the recovery with stock, and remove root access from system, tho not all of the kernels features will work if youre not rooted,so there is no advantage.

you will need to remain s off in order to keep using the kernel, with or without a custom recovery.

s-off does nothing other than remove write protections. it by itself will not affect your ability to recieve OTAs,or any other normal phone functionality.

hope that helps, holler if you have further questions

Thank you for your response.

I've unlocked the bootloader, and when installing custom recovery...TWRP...the phone locks up immediately after it says the downloading of the boot.img was successful.

Specifically, what happens is that after this:

fastboot boot twrp.img
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 1.250s]
booting...
OKAY [ 0.000s]

The phone locks up while in Fastboot USB mode and has to be restarted by holding down the power and volume down buttons. It doesn't boot into recovery at all.

Anyone with any ideas?

unfortunately, that is typically what happens with the newer hboots. 1.54+ seem to have the ability to boot a recovery image removed

the command youre running is to temporarily launch the recovery into usable memory,so you can use it to install superuser and your kernel, without permantly installing it on the phone. this is why you cannot boot to it after the fact by selecting recovery from the hboot menu.

what you will need to do is permantly install the recovery, and then install the kernel, and superuser. afterward, you can reinstall the stock recovery via the same method youll use to install twrp( fastboot flash recovery imagename.img )

if youve taken the most recent update,we may need to find an OTApkg to take a stock recovery from, otherwise there is a thread on xda with the decrypted ruu that you can use the recovery image from.

im on my way to work, but i can certainly help you find the stock image later today/this evening if needed
