Just to make sure, your bootloader says *** UNLOCKED ***?

Did you try the TacoRoot option as well?

If that doesn't work, it's beyond me. You'll have to go to the thread at XDA for the SuperTool (link is in the guide) and post a reply with your problem there. They should be able to help you get it resolved.

I think the problem is in my ROM version or something.
I read about the Revolutionary method and that it worked on Wildfire with android 2.2.1
So is there a way to downgrade to that version from 2.3.5 ??
And is it reversible ?

Your ROM version and HBOOT are correct. You can also try this root method now that you have unlocked your bootloader:

This is for the older "Wildfire," not the "Wildfire S."

You're great. I already gave up hope. But Now Link2SD has root access and superuser app is shown in app drawer.
Can you please add the link you gave to your guide after Unlocking Bootloader ?
It will help a lot of people.

Congrats!

Don't forget to backup your ROM before making too many changes. Reverting without a backup could cost you a lot of Tylenol!

I can't install the second ClockWorkMod Recovery using fastboot
I just type the line you mentioned and reboot the phone, it seems okay but when I turn on the phone and try to backup with Rom Manager, it asks for download and when it finishes it says "An error occured while flashing your recovery"

Are you talking about 5.0.2.8? If so, use the installer for 5.0.2.6--it works fine. I was running 5.0.2.6 until today.

If that works, try upgrading to 5.0.2.8 using fastboot.

I don't know for sure, but I think so. Running the RUU...exe might not work, but flashing the bootloader should. See the guide for directions.

Cool

finally done and I can confirm that it is indeed working on Telstra-branded Wildfire S

great thanks to CafeKampuchia for the amazing guide! here is a brief of the steps that I have made.

It is probably not the most effective way to do it (e.g. I could probably skip the upgrade to 2.3.5 and avoid issues with HBOOT-1.08.0000), rather it's just a reference of what and when happened, and what has changed (warning: lots of boring letters and numbers below):

  • So I started off with innocent WFS A510b model PG76120, it was (and still is) S-ON and was initially equipped with Telstra-branded ROM (Android 2.3.3 software number 1.52.841.2 +some bloatware)
  • at first I updated to 2.3.5 using the GoldCard and stock HTC firmware for EU market - this is optional step 2 from the first post.
  • this has changed my phone to Android 2.3.5, software number 2.13.401.2, model A510e (this was a bit surprising!), HBOOT-1.08.0000 (this caused me a bit of pain during the next step), MICROP-0451 and RADIO-7.53.39.03M (Oct 31 2011,20:38:16)
  • anyway then I went to unlock the bootloader via HTCdev.com as per the step 3
  • since the previous upgrade actually changed me to dreaded HBOOT-1.08.0000 the usual procedure with RUU from HTCdev.com did not work (it failed with ERROR [191] ROM IS NOT SUPPORTED)
  • but then instructions from topic "[HBOOT] HBOOT update for EU users who's having problem with RUU" helped, it all worked like a charm!
  • after that my phone became *** UNLOCKED ***, HBOOT-1.08.0099 and RADIO-7.53.39.03M (Nov 28 2011,19:09:21) (I only list stuff here that has changed)
  • then I went and rooted the phone via HTC supertool v3 as per step 4. This was OK, the only issue was that it did not work under Parallels Desktop for Mac (yes I am using Mac! ) so I had to do this step on my spare HP laptop with Windows and it all worked fine
  • after verifying that phone was actually rooted (Superuser application installed) I used eoghan2t7's installer to install ClockworkMod Recovery, it was version 5.0.2.6
  • after that I have installed the ROM Manager application from the market and used it to update to the latest version of the recovery (which is 5.0.2.8 as of now)
  • then as prescribed I created backup of then installed 2.3.5 EU ROM via ClockworkMod Recovery mode(Nandroid backup)
  • and finally I have installed unofficial CyanogenMod 7.2.0-RC0-marvel-KANG (also using ClockworkMod Recovery)
  • This has brought me to Android 2.3.7, build number GWK74, baseband 47.23a.35.3035H_7.53.39.03M and kernel 2.6.35.13
  • finally I had one last issue with installing Google applications package (as if it was not enough troubles yet! )
  • After installing gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip and rebooting, the keyboard was constantly crashing (process com.android.inputmethod.latin has stopped working unexpectedly) right after reboot, so I could not do anything at all to proceed with initial Google account configuration
  • luckily topic "[ripped] google apps for cm7.2 port" was there to rescue me and after I re-flashed CyanogenMod and then used ripped-gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip it finally worked OK (installed Market and other apps without any crashes so I could finish the configuration and proceed further)
  • of course after that there was all the usual yadda-yadda with link2sd and all other essential apps which is well covered in the internets and much easier

Thanks again everyone for their great topics and posts!

Gday fyerwyer,
Just wanted to confirm you definitely havenít lost any functionality since using the European RUU to root. My understanding is that the European Wildfire S (A510e) supports 900/2100 frequencies, and the Australian Telstra branded Wildfire S (A510B) supports 850/2100 frequencies. Both Telstra and Vodafone use the 850 and 2100 frequencies
for their HSAPDA WCDMA 3G network (ie. 3.5G) but not the 900 (which is why I bought the a510B model).
May sound like a stupid question, maybe the ROM has nothing to do with this, but is your phone still utilizing the 850 frequency.

Also did you do the upgrade to 2.3.5 using "SomeDudeOnTheNet"s guide? Any probs with this?

sorry mate, not sure why this could happen, for me it recognised the image almost immediately (after 1-2 seconds maybe)

although I did have different software version (2.13.401.2), could this be causing a problem?

cannot really advise anything apart making sure that you copy the image in the root folder of SD card, maybe checking the MD5 sum as well? The one that worked for me is:

Code:
$ md5sum PG76IMG.zip
49cc26c4152f1a5ca5d7fa17112c0aa5 PG76IMG.zip
PS also corrected typo in my first post, of course my phone is S-ON not S-OFF

use either md5 (Linux) or md5sum (Mac) utility from command line (as per my example), and for Windows there are special utilities that can calculate the MD5 sum for any file that you open in Windows Explorer (don't remember the name but there were several of them)

Default Help!!

Hi I have a wildfire s on 3UK, HBOOT 1.03.0000, s-on, android 2.3.3 htc sense 2.1 and software number 1.33771.5. Ive tried all ways to unlock the bootloader for my phone so that I can put a custom rom on it but when im going through htcdev it wont let me do the update to 2.17.0.0 Im getting error code 191 rom is not supported. I have also tried the PG76IMG.ZIP thing but also no luck. Is there anyway you can help me please guys as this is getting on my nerves now after reading god knows how many different threads. I have never done this before either and am bit of a beginner. If you can help me in basic and easy to understand steps that would be great. I also have clockwork mod installed on my device but it wont let me do a recovery???

If that's the case and you've followed step 3B of the guide carefully then I don't know why it's not working unless it's because you've flashed a custom recovery before unlocking and rooting, if that's possible. I'd upgrade to 2.3.5 per step 2 to get back to a stock recovery and try again.

Default Htc ime

Gday,
I recently rooted my Wildfire S and am now running CM7.

Only thing I dont like about CM7 and miss about sense is the keyboard.
Ive found and installed several diferent versions of HTC ime on the web which supposedly work on CM7. None of them have worked.
Anyone succesfully installed HTC ime on a Wildfire S running CM7 ?
If so please provide details.

I realise this may not be the appropriate thread to post this in however I thought it may get noticed by the right people here. Same question is also posted here:
HTC IME for WFS RUNNING CM7

About the sound thing, I can't help you. About the custom ROM, I do recommend that you check out CyanogenMod 7.2 by Alques over at XDA.

by the way I had the same issue with supertool v3 including that part when typing reboot did not do anything, but it was only happening when I did it under Parallels Desktop. When I tried again using actual laptop with Windows everything was fine.

hi i was wondering could anyone help me as i do have problem
i followed the guide and worked perfectly till stage 4, i missed stage 5a because i werent getting notifications about 2.13.401.3 being available so i completed stage 5b but when i wanted to backup the stock rom (stage 5c) using ClockworkMod app on the phone things went wrong from their, i started the app and it gave me a message saying:
'you must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at /system/bin/su or /system/xbin/su. Use Google Search on your computer to find out instructions on how to root your phone'
i clicked ok and selected the option 'Backup Current ROM' and it told me to install ClockworkMod Recovery, so i did and i selected my phone but once the green bar at the top finished it said:
'An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands!'
can anyone help me plz. Thanks

Actually I've not heard of it.

From their FAQ:
Quote:
4. Q: Does rooting do any of the following? 1. Wipe the data? 2. Unlock the bootloader? 3. Change the recovery ?

A: You have to unlock the bootloader before rooting. It won't wipe the data or change the recovery.
So the short answer is, No, you can't root with just one click--unless you've unlocked your bootloader which takes a lot of clicks!

The Wildfire S is actually very easy to root, and there are several good methods. The hard part is getting S-OFF or unlocking the bootloader so you can root. That's really what the guide is about, unlocking the bootloader.

So just to confirm, you successfully completed all of step 3 and when you boot the device into bootloader you see ***UNLOCKED***, right?

When you run the HTC SuperTool, what happens?
