From what I gather with what these two are saying to you, it sounds as if you need to go to HTC and PAY for them to fix your phone. It seems as if you've killed your phone, and nothing they can do/say will help you fix it.

Brian, try pressing the power button for a full 10 seconds and let me know what happens.

Also, please let me know if anything unusual happened during the install.

The backlight just flashes intermittantly (every 2 or 3 seconds)--same as when I just press the power button. Update went smoothly--using procedure 2--it said it completed successfully, rebooted, and then--backlight flashing.

Is there a possibility that the battery is too low? Will it take a charge (does the orange LED come on)?

If it's not the battery, then I'm afraid it's hard bricked. HTC or your carrier should honor the warranty since the fault happened during the install of a stock HTC update with no indication of an install error until the reboot. You did nothing wrong. Sorry about that.

This is known to happen occasionally when flashing a stock ROM. The odd thing is that flashing a stock ROM has potential to hard brick a phone whereas flashing a custom ROM via CMW Recovery usually only soft bricks the device, go figure.

I've been checking this and the root tutorial. Both very informative and detailed. I am wondering if there's a safer way to solve my problem though...

I bought a wildfire from HK, seems to have the mainland system on it. Cannot register a google account(market and sync cannot be used). I want to try and change to this Europe version. Does it support Chinese interface/fonts/writing. Will it affect my ability to all using a Chinese SIM, in China? Will a system update straight from HTC Sync from a computer not in China do the trick, or will it recognize the Chinese system I have and update a new Chinese one, with all the restrictions?

Please advise.

Is it OK to try this procedure if the phone is already on 2.3.5?

I say this because even though my phone received an OTA update to 2.3.5 a couple of weeks ago, the rest of the software has not been updated.

When I try the HTC unlock bootloader method I get the message:

'Your ROM version is not the latest version. Please upgrade to 2.14.161.1 to apply this RUU to be able to unlock the bootloader', but when I go to software updates on my phone and check for updates it tells me my phone's software is up to date.

So it seems I've got to get the update from somewhere, but since the phone is already on 2.3.5 does this make it more risky?

I don't think the European ROM is going to fully support Chinese so I wouldn't do this update. All you need to do is install Google Apps on your current ROM:
[ripped] google apps for cm7.2 port - xda-developers

In order to flash Google apps you will have to unlock the bootloader, root and install ClockworkMod Recovery first:
http://androidforums.com/wildfire-s-all-things-root/480954-guide-how-root-wildfire-s-s-finally.html

But you should skip step 2.

If you have any further questions, please start a new thread as this one is about updating the software, not about installing Google apps.

You shouldn't need to update the software or bootloader further to unlock and root the device. Try going back to the rooting guide and running step 3B. If you run into trouble, post on the thread for that guide.

Hope this helps!

[ROM][HTC][WILDFIRE S A510e][EUROPE][2.3.5][PG76IMG.ZIP]

I managed to update to 2.3.5 with this zip however as I didn't notice at the time of installation that it was a 2.13.401.2 not 2.13.401.3. As a result I can't root my phone with the further steps in your root guide. HTC EU requires 2.13.401.3. When I tried to install it, it said Main Version is older! Update Fail!. I went back a step and tried to install it with the temp from the filefactory version and it said the same thing, Main Version is older! Update Fail!.

What should I do now? Downgrade to 2.3.3 then upgrade it to 2.3.5 2.13.401.3.?

Try skipping the RUU update bit and go straight onto the unlocking part as the bootloader may already be unlockable.

I've tried that. I can't get an identifier code and I've followed the steps correctly.

Try and unlock the bootloader. It should work even though it gives you the error. That's because you have an even newer version than what's required.

edit: Oh sorry, I didn't see your reply after... Forget that then...
What error do you get when you try to get the token?

Thank you for your concern but my phone is now rooted. It was long process since I had updated to the wrong HTC EU version. This involved me using zergRush and changing the version history to that of HTC Asia India. That allowed me to upgrade my Bootloader. I then had to update again with HTC Asia WWE so that I could obtain my identifier token.

It was a bit confusing and took all day but I got it done. Thanks for all the help.

Shah, you should be fine flashing the boot and system images for the A510e but you should not attempt to flash the radio as the frequencies for the A510b are different. (I don't think you even can flash the radio). Use the search feature of the forum and look for A510b because I remember some folks doing this about a year ago and it worked, but I don't remember clearly.

Hope that helps!

Unhappy

Hi, thanks for the awesome tutorial, first of all, but I've had a problem.

I tried every method except the goldcard, so I figured I may as well try it. Got it set up, got the right .zip on, followed all the instructions to the letter, including making sure it was Marvel, and I could feel my blood pressure coming down watching it update. Got to the reboot super excited, and then out of nowhere, the same flashing problem that others have had. I wondering, does it change anything that I used a goldcard? Will HTC still fix it under warranty?

Thanks in advance.

It shouldn't change anything. You were flashing an HTC RUU to an HTC phone.

Default Phone brick?

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. Unfortunately, I think I've brick my phone (hardware). I followed the procedure 1 in this tutorial but using RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.26.401.3_Radio_47.23e.35 .3038H_7.57.39.10M_release_261695_signed.exe, instead of version 2.13. The application was during 2 hours showing the message "Updating Radio..." and I shut down the computer. Then I saw for a moment in my phone the bootloader, saying the same as before trying to update the software: "MARVEL PVT SHIP S-ON RL HBOOT-0.90.0000 RADIO-7.46.35.08" But instead of the bootloader option in the bottom of the screen it said "RUU" and I could not do nothing else. Then I removed the battery and tried to boot, but trying to boot it in normal mode or bootloader mode, it shows a grey screen and reboot itself in an infinite loop. It's an HTC Wildfire S A510e (GSM), and the build number 1.33.401.2. Is there any hope?, should the HTC service repair it as it's probably unrooted?. Thanks in advance.

If you can't get into bootloader then you have a hard brick I'm afraid. The only way is to get it to the HTC service repair

This is for the Marvel/A510e version of Wildfire S, but do you happen to know how to perform the same process on the Virgin Mobile MarvelC/A510c Wildfire S? I've been having trouble with updating it on the air.

If you've bricked your phone you will have to re-flash the stock rom. But first you will have to unlock the phone again most probably. THis thread will help:

[Guide] Re-flash stock ROM (RUU) after bricking a rooted device

After completing Procedure 2, I think my Wildfire S is bricked. Here's the details:

I originally bought my Wildfire S from Virgin Mobile Canada as a prepaid phone, then unlocked it, and eventually brought it to the USA where I use AT&T prepaid. Before I attempted these procedures, the HBOOT menu said my phone was MARVEL PVT blah blah. So I went ahead.

Procedure 1 gave me errors when RUU tried to update. So I went for Procedure 2. I had to get the GoldCard, which went through successfully. After fetching the rom.zip and getting it on my SD Card, during the HBOOT, my phone originally said something like wrong image, but then recognized it, and went through several minutes of update.

At the end of it, after reboot, I went into that 3 second flicker boot loop. I can't go into HBOOT mode either. I tried holding the buttons for 10s, and connect it to PC. Nothing worked. I started with full battery, so that's not the issue.

Is there anything else I can try? Time to get a new phone (since I voided my warranty upon unlocking)? In retrospect ,should I have gone with the the Virgin Mobile RUU ROM instead of what this guide suggests?

If you can't get into HBOOT, your phone is bricked and the only solution is the HTC center. The mistake you did is that you created a goldcard. That is only done for MarvelC phone whereas you have a Marvel phone...

If that is the case, then this point should have been emphasized in the guide. Oh wells, time to get a new phone.

I'm sorry but this is actually mentioned in the very first paragraph and even the title of the thread

Sorry, perhaps there's a misunderstanding. But I really want to find out where went wrong. The guide said I should not try this if my phone is MarvelC/A501c. I have a Marvel, not a MarvelC, so I went ahead with this guide. I don't see any special warnings in the goldcard section either.

Caro, Goldcards do work with GSM devices such as the Marvel/A510e. Using a Goldcard with Marvel/A510e will not cause a brick. Nonetheless, your first statement is correct I'm afraid.

Unfortunately, I think this is the answer, especially the second paragraph:

2. There is a possibility that you could "brick" or bootloop your phone. There are two types of brick: soft (recoverable) and hard (non-recoverable). With a soft brick, the phone will not boot or keeps rebooting ("bootloop"), but it can be started in bootloader mode which allows repair of the ROM. With a hard brick, the phone won't even boot into bootloader after holding the power button for 10 seconds and the phone must be returned to HTC for service.

Since we're talking about flashing a stock HTC ROM, the odds are slim that you'll brick the phone, but it's possible. Ironically, flashing a stock HTC ROM to a non-rooted phone for which that ROM was created occasionally causes a hard brick. I've seen it happen by running the HTC RUU from Windows as well as flashing manually. I can't tell you the odds. All I can tell you that they are slim. You can minimize the risk by making sure that you do not attempt to flash a ROM not intended for your device (ie, following this procedure with an A510e/MarvelC device).
Since you were flashing a stock HTC ROM and there is no way to know if the bootloader is locked or unlocked, I think you're warranty is still intact. I'd take it back and tell them it bricked while installing a stock HTC ROM.

Dear CafeKampuchia,

I was trying to upgrade my Wildfire S from 2.3.5 to Jelly bean.
I did everything like Unlock from HTC Dev,CWM 5.0.2.8, rooted & updated with zip file cyanogen mod 10 marvel.
When I reboot the handset it always stuck on htc screen. Even I have waited for around for 30 mins but the handset wasnt responded anything over HTC Screen.

Now the case is that the Handset is stuck on the HTC screen and I dont have a backup to restore. So cant use the Handset for any function. I am able to access the HBOOT menu.

Please provide the best solution.

When I ran the RUU.exe, it loaded, but after that it just exited out and it created no files so I can't do procedure 2.

Default still cant root my WFS

All I can recommend is that you try to unlock your bootloader. There is an updated bootloader for Orange FR at htcdev.com (2.14.73.1), so I can't imagine that it won't flash. Once that flashes, the new ROM might flash too.

+ You'll be able to root and upgrade your phone and install a custom ROM if need be to get rid of Orange branding.

- You'll lose your warranty

Awesome guide

As an experienced Android user and previous rooter of HTC phones I have come back to Android from a fruit based device after only 11 months.
I sold my fruit based device and bought a Nexus 7. I also bought an Ebay Wildfire S to keep me going until my contract is due for renewal in the new year.

I struggled for 12 hours with the Ebay Wildfire S as it had a Vietnamese HTC Stock ROM on it and being from the UK I didn't want it.
This guide worked a treat. I couldn't use option 1 or 2 but having already rooted the phone and unlocked the boot loader option 3 was the easiest and I applaud your work.

Thanks very much.

Yeah, I forget all the hoops you have to jump through to downgrade a firmware on an HTC. Try this way instead:

Thanks for your well written guide. My phone is not rooted and the bootloader is locked, so I was not sure if your guide would help, but I followed it anyway and I got this error in the command prompt:

No response. Okay, let me try a different approach. Correct me if I am wrong do I have to unlock the bootloader first in order to downgrade? My HBOOT is 1.09.0099 with S-On

If you are using the guide below, please read the instructions carefully, friend. Step 6 requires you to re-lock the bootloader.

[Guide] Re-flash stock ROM (RUU) after bricking a rooted device

If we are discussing that method, it would be best to carry on the discussion in that thread
