Default automatic Photos backup mystery

I was browsing through my google+ (which I have not done in months) and came across an album "phone backed up pics". I opend it and to my surprise EVERY photo that i had ever taken, downloaded or received was in that folder !!
this was fantastic as I lost my phone on 24/04/2012. the point I'm making is how did this happen?
I have never downloaded an app to do this, I'm very sure I haven't because I was always deleting apps due to "low on storage" warning.
I remember a long time ago doing something on Google+ but with much searching I can not replicate or find how on earth this is happening!

please help as I would like this to happen on my new phone.
thanks for your time
stephen

It's the G+ app. In G+ goto settings and you'll find turn on instant uploads and other related options there.

g+ is often a preinstalled a system app and if so you can't delete it.
