Question WM8650 wired ethernet issues

Good day,

I have a rooted WM8650 7" tablet which has trouble connecting to wired ethernet through my router. I'd prefer the wired connection, as the wifi in the device is weak and cuts off frequently.

mid 7" tablet, wondermedia wm8650
android version 2.2
kernel version
build number generic-eng2.2 froyo ver1.5.5-20110920.043830
red/green led

Paradyne DSL modem, connected to a tp-link TL-WR541G. Other devices, both wired and wireless, are able to get a flawless signal and connect.

*if* I unplug the wireless router from the dsl modem, and plug the WM8650 directly into the modem, the 'eth' signal immediately shows up and the tablet is online. However, plugging the ethernet cable into the back of the wireless router results in nothing - tablet has no idea it's plugged in. Other devices are plugged in to the router without issue, and the cable is good.

I'm pretty sure this is my fault, not the tablet's, and I'm just doing something wrong. Is there some silly little setting somewhere in the router that needs to be changed, or do i need to learn how to give the tablet a static IP address instead of dynamic, or what?
