Default ZTE Merit Z990G Wifi Connectivity Issues.

I've had my Merit for a couple of weeks now, and very recently I started having connectivity issues. Wouldn't be such a big deal, but at present I have no actual service through my provider and have been using it solely through wifi.

I noticed it first today while at the local Community College. I was connected to their public network, and every time I would refresh Facebook or Pinger I would get an error regarding a lack of internet connection. I thought nothing of it, figuring it was just a relatively unstable connection.. being that it's public at a CC, I figured traffic was very heavy.

However it seems to have followed me home. Every 3-5 minutes, the Wifi connection symbol on the status bar goes white.. The signal strength doesnt typically drop, but it turns from green to white for a matter of 5-10 seconds-- just long enough to be irritating and interrupt certain processes/applications.

I have tried disabling the wifi, turning it back on.. to no avail. I have gone as far as a factory settings reboot, with no luck. I have googled the issue and cannot find anything particularly helpful, and after browsing through all three pages of the Avail/Merit forum, I've found no threads regarding a similar issue.

I do not wish to go through the trouble of setting up a static IP, though if anyone is insistent upon this being helpful, I will give it a shot. The reason I am resistant to this.. is it is not an isolated incident, it seems to happen everywhere (Though I've only used it on 2 wireless networks.. I will be trying it on a third tomorrow, and if it persists I might just flip :-P)

I guess I'm wondering if anyone has experienced a similar issue, or if there might be a potential fix to this.. My gut is telling me it's probably a defect within the phone itself. In that case I will simply take it back to the point of purchase and request an exchange. But I am hoping it does not come to that.

Any insight provided would be greatly appreciated!

In my searching for android connectivity issues I have found people saying that when the wifi symbol turns white (on other devices) it does not necessarily indicate a loss of connectivity, could it simply be a coincidence that I often get errors through pinger/facebook

No. It is a problem with Android. If you have root there it's a fix. Go to ect/dhcpcd/ & change the permission of dhcpcd-hooks folder to rwx for all users.

Thank you for the input, king. Changing the DHCP settings as you reccomended.. does that in itself require a root? Im looking through the advanced IP settings as we speak and I don't see anything of the sort.

Honestly, I was looking through the root instructions just prior to posting this, and because of all the bloatware bogging this device down, I was seriously considering rooting it, however I didn't want to if it was just going to need exchanged due to this issue I'm having with the wifi, being that for someone so unfamiliar with the process as myself it will be quite a lengthy procedure lol.

Fortunately I've got a buddy that has been through the process before, and I'm hoping he will be able to help me out with it!

Now, after it is rooted, and I need to change t he DHCP settings, is this some kind of option that will become available within the device itself? Or will it be something I need to do via the command prompt while hooked up to my PC via USB? I'm unfortuantely not so familiar with using the dos/command prompt to access devices...

Root is easy. I could do it from here without even looking at it. You have to be rooted to change the permissions. It can be done through adb but you will want to do it from a file explorer like ES.

Okay, well once I've gotten this thing rooted I will have to find more info regarding it. I don't know what the "ES" you're referring to is to be quite honest, but I'm sure I can figure it out

You may want to look over at androidarea51.com for a update.zip way of root.

Thanks again for the heads up! I will look into all this and get back to you as soon as I get the rooting underway!

Green means you are connected to Google. Servers white means your not. Nothing to do with service.
