Has anyone traded their Moment in for a Hero? Why?

So over in the Moment forums, there's all sorts of users who initially had the Hero and traded it in within their 30 day window for the Moment, for various reasons. I don't see so much of that here in the Hero forum, and was wondering if anyone has given up their Moment for a Hero... and if so, why? I'd imagine part of it is that the Hero was released almost a month before the Moment, but I'd still imagine that some people have made the switch the other way. I'm looking to get one of the two phones and am still really on the fence, so any stories you have would be helpful. Personally I don't care too much about having a hardware keyboard or not, but that might be helpful for other post viewers, so include it if it's relevant. Thanks!

Well, I just got the Hero and was on the fence between the hero and the moment as well. After alot of research i went with the Hero and I am very very happy with my purchase. IMO HTC makes better phones than Samsung. Also, the moment seemed too big and bulky. If you dont mind having the keyboard on the screen and not having actual buttons id say go with the hero

I've actually gone both ways. I had some serious software problems with the Moment (both, I swapped for a 2nd Moment, and an hour later hit the same wall) unfortunately, and went back to the Hero (mostly because the store was out of stock of Moments).

I certainly miss the hardware keyboard, and the screen was *very* nice. It was a bit faster but not 30%+ faster as the clock-speed difference would have you believe.

Truthfully, I'm glad I went back to the Hero. The device feels more solidly constructed (and it's a hell of a lot prettier), SenseUI looks just great, and now that it's rooted and cleaned up it runs amazingly smooth, at least as well as my experience with the Moment.

what did rooting it do? I was thinking about doing it but wasnt sure if its worth it

Rooting has several benefits, the biggest for me are:

1) The ability to remove some of the 'stock' applications that I don't use, that always run. The 'nascar' and TV apps for example.

2) The ability to install custom themse, interfaces, or replace the stock HTC software entirely if you're so inclined. So far only one custom ROM is available, but has several 'tweaks' to speed up the phone and let you do other 'root' tasks easily.

3) Apps2SD - the ability to save your apps to the SD card instead of phone memory means you have basically unlimited app storage space.

Lastly, a belief that an open-source operating system should continue to be open, regardless of what the carriers think ;)

LOL no worries, it's the nature of the beast on forums like this I think!

I find it interesting that some people mention SenseUI as a plus... for me I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing. I won't disagree that it's DAMN sexy (I've played with both phones for long amounts of time at the sprint store) but I love customizing my stuff, and stock android seems to have more limitless possibilities. Not to mention the longer wait Hero users may have waiting for HTC to get the latest version of Android working with SenseUI... or is that not as much of a concern now that the phone's been rooted?

Of course now that it HAS been rooted... that's another plus in the Hero column. I suppose there are worse things than having to decide between two apparently awesome phones, but I can't think of any right now :)

After rooting, SenseUI changes from a pleasant experience to a joy to use, it's so very nice when it runs smoothly :)

You do have the option to go with the default android UI, or a third party UI like OpenHome (I used it for a while on the Hero, worked pretty well)

As for projecting the ROM path on the Hero - I see the upcoming update getting rolled into MoDaCo's ROM, which will satisfy many. After that some courageous fool will hopefully roll up a 2.0 custom ROM long before HTC releases theirs.

+1...went from Hero to Moment (hard keyboard and 800 mhz processor was very enticing) then finally back to the Hero as of today!

Why? the Moment was great until I discovered that there is a major problem with the GPS, therefore all location-based services such as Google maps, Sprint Nav. , Where, etc were rendered useless! This seems to caused by Sprint CDMA not being compatible with cupcake...Somehow HTC made some modifications to Sense UI or cupcake to overcome this problem.

Other gripes were...Pandora skipped and stopped every other minute, Slacker radio was better but still had some skips... No Google Voice Search...

If you have no use for GPS services (I do rely on them) then the Moment is a good phone for you... Beautiful AMOLED screen, slightly snappy than the Hero, nice physical keyboard, fast internet browsing...but no Sense UI which can be setup similarly with Open Home etc.

One thing though, I ran the xtreme speed test app. on the Moment at my home (same Location) and got speeds of 800 Kbit/s consistently (over 3G) but on the Hero can only get 550 Kbit/s .....Can anyone explain that? Even wifi speeds were different....10 Mb/s versus 3.5Mb/s on my Comcast Internet !?!?

Hmmm... Do we really have Rev.A on the Hero or maybe Sprint duped us all, and we only have Rev.0 ....Could that be possible?

Anyways, now I look forward to some dust under my glass lol:rolleyes:

Trader! LMAO

Good luck with your Hero Kayawire. May the dust never settle under your glass. Which, besides wanting a HW keyboard, is the only reason I returned my Hero.

Trader/Traitor.... lol...I know, but at least I gave it my best shot...Now let me take cover my friend, I see a sand storm brewing on the horizon...But at least I will have my working GPS to navigate through :D

GPS is somewhat of a big deal to me, I like to go hiking a few times a year at least and thought it would be great to finally have a phone with not only google maps but a digital compass. I've been keeping a careful eye on the moment forums and am hoping a real fix is implemented soon for it... I can't imagine that 60 days from now there won't be anything done to address it. Not that that means I'm going for the moment, but I've been leaning slightly towards it today (that will likely change again tomorrow as it has every day since I decided to narrow it down to these two phones).

I gotta honestly say that the dust thing scares me a lot, that's the kind of thing that really annoys me. It sounds like maybe there's some phones out there that are built right? I'm still waiting to see if anyone finds a definite pattern.

I took the time to make a positives and negatives (as well as a few fence-riders) for each phone that I might post for discussion. I'm still deciding on if I should add it as part of this thread or give it its own in the Sprint forum. It might help others with their decisions as well...

I returned the Moment and went back to the Hero. The Moment was simply too bulky for my tastes. Couple that with poor battery life(in my case) and the overly blue amoled screen, it just didn't fit me. Ironically the 2 things I missed the most from the Hero were the HTC contacts and Google voice search. I can not live without Google voice search any more. It also works great in Handcent sms. I had a boatload of problems with Nuance which is supposed to be great.

With a couple of updates and hopefully a way to change the color temperature of the screen, the Moment is a fine device, albeit a ugly brick. My wife is due for an upgrade in a couple of weeks and wants it. Moxier mail comes with it and it is a good exchange client. So I will probably pick one up.
