Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

Please lets not turn this into a thread about how much we hate Apple. You can start a new thread for that. Personally I would like to know if anyone has heard any more about a little thing called eclair for the phone I love!

Agree with you completely. However I only have to think what a huge advance the Hero was over the Symbian phone I had before, and it makes waiting a few days (weeks) longer for the upgrade more bearable.

Custom ROMS ftw, wish battery life was not such an issue, a small price to pay though

You have also ota update on this one so basically, it's from the official 2.1 eclair taiwan release and the guys and Villain have made a great job. I didn't find a bug but now after i've installed a few apps, i discovered that i cannot find 3d gallery. When i had the rom with no widgets at all this was in my phone but now....

The battery seems good enough, but you have so much more posibilities, like overclocking :) So, yes. Custom roms FTW.

...I find that story horribly easy to believe and am grateful that I've got an unbranded Hero.
Your assumption being that this problem that seems to be effecting Orange/T-Mobile, won't also effect unbranded Heros.

I can easily imagine that HTC will delay the unbranded release another month or more; of course they could just make an announcement either way, but there's almost no chance of that given their past performance in the customer support:rolleyes:

I'm so looking forward to being able to upgrade to Nokia/Apple/SE, anybody but HTFC!

...T-Mobile might be putting their release schedule back also.
Makes sense seeing as Orange & T-Mobile are now the same company/group.

Purely based on the fact that the unbranded Taiwanese Hero has the 2.1 ROM, I can't see this being anything other than an Operator-based issue.

I agree though that Orange/T-Mobile customers would likely go crazy if they saw the unbranded phones getting the 2.1 update long before them.

ah but it would be a lesson to companys like orange and Tmobile.

"If it aint broke Dont fix it!" we prolly would have had the update several weeks ago if certain companys hadnt messed about with HTC firmwre just to get bit of advertising and useless programs in.

I myself am very happy with my mobile and will be for a long time when update is out, most other phones dont have a look in and i think id find it very hard to go back to other OS's. lol just 6 years ago screens still had black text and green screens, weve came very far in a short amount of time and am very prepared to wait that bit longer till stuff is fixed properly and not just workarounds. Roll on next friday and if not.....who cares not like we are owed one anyway, you dont buy a sausage roll and wait for it to go moldy then ask for replacement, why do it with a phone? yes weve been lied to or told misinformation but at least there still working on a phone tht is already a grandad in the market.
P.S sorry for long rant.

Hi all, I got fed up with the not knowing! So called Orange, who put me on hold 4 ages whilst they tried to find out about the update! the lady came back to me saying she could not find any info on an update and she had googled it! (we can all Google it and find out plenty of info but she couldnt!!) So she gave me HTC's no. I called them, they said they have released the pre 2.1 to all UK networks and that Orange shouldn't have referred me to them!! I asked when HTC would b releasing 2.1 and he replied that he didn't no! I love my hero all I want is to b able to Bluetooth. I can't believe how frustrating this waiting about to get the update is.

I have am Orange branded phone. is there any way of unbranding the phone without rooting? I remember on symbian it was a case of hooking it up via usb and using a program to change the product code from a.branded one to a generic country release then when you did a firmware update it would pull the latest for the new code.

anything similar possible for Android?

OK, but if you bought a Sausage Roll and the people that made it said they`ll give you a new one when the Sausage Roll goes Moldy.. but then they don`t.. you`ll be pretty miffed off I reckon. You`d probably switch to Meat Pies or Crab Sticks or something.

well, that's what i used to think also, i'm on my third hero for unrelated problems, but all three had random dropped calls plus very erratic reception.
I gave up, convinced telus to scrap my remaining 30 months and bought an iphone 3gs for the new contract price, i've had it for 2 weeks, i get full bars basically everywhere, including inside, not one dropped call either, i upgraded to os 4 yesterday and she's still smooth runnin.

I would think the radio in the hero is suspect, and that a firmware plus radio software upgrade would probably do the trick.

i'm thinking of selling the Hero, any takers, its unlocked.

mmm... depressing. :( what i dont understand is that my friend has an unlocked hero on rogers and never had one problem..which leads me to think the hspa network is the problem. because you dont hear of to many other hero owners on here complaining about dropped calls/reception issues.
