Questions regarding navigation app: ALK CoPilot Live 8 - And, any alternatives?

Hi (my first post here),

I have used Wayfinder (now shut down) as my main navigation software, and used it on my SE C702. Wayfinder was great, but I'm now forced looking for a new app. Have just bought the Samsung Galaxy Spica because of it's Android OS and long battery life (getting it today).

First I should mention my needs:

  • Turn-by-turn navigation (with speach, English is enough).
  • It must have downloadable maps, internal route calculation and street information. IOW, no need for any internet connection (data transfer).
  • Maps must at least be able to cover Europe (detailed street info).
  • It must have options to avoid highways.
  • It must have a walking-mode.

It would be a plus for free map updates, and PC software (calculating routes, updates etc) or a internet page doing the same thing (like the one by Wayfinder).

Important! The reason why I don't wan't it to rely on data-transfer (like Google Maps), is that the data-cost is VERY high abroad. Using Google Maps around Europe would be impossible, cost wise.

So :) Anyone who can recommend a solid navigation app.?

The only one I can find is ALK's CoPilot Live 8 (European version). Any experience with that?

I have studied it a little, and have found out that the CP8 is nearly a year old (they have updated it during that time), and they don't provide free map updates. That doesn't sound so good... Also, I can't quite understand if the it supports A-GPS, useful when GPS connection fails. The price is

Thanks for all replies! Sorry for no feedback, the email responds went to my trash can...

I bought a used CoPilot 8 Europe, and it seems OK. Not as good as my old Wayfinder though. The CoPilot 8 speach warnings are not very accurate. Sometimes I get a direction just in the middle of a roundabout. Dangerous, considering I'm driving a motorcycle and completely rely on speach (phone in pocket and using earphones). This worked perfectly with Wayfinder. Also, the Norwegian voice translation is horrible.

Anyone knowns how to use an English voice (for example), and Norwegian menu (app) language?

Harry2,
The Navigon system looks good, but quite similar to CoPilot (Or?), but at a higher price. But, they seem to update their maps more often, from what I understand(?).

frankbonatelli,
Look a bit limited, but the FAQ's is not in English so... Also, no price or buying info.

Thanks :)

Yes, both are very good. On my Navigon PNA the maps are updated 4 times a year.
That could make up for the price difference. Customer support at ALK (CoPilot) said only ONE map upgrade was included for the whole version period.

4 times a year, sound like what's normal for map developers (like TeleAtlas), so I guess you get what they release, when they release new versions.

What about the speach, is it accurate? Like, do you get precise direction AHEAD of turning points?

Thanks!
