Loving my Droid despite recent news

I was one of the nuts who bought the Droid the day it debuted. I have loved it ever since. Now that the news is out about the Droid X, I have to say that I'm still in love with the phone I have and I'm convinced I bought into Android/Verizon at the perfect time.

Not that the Droid X isn't sweet. I love it's upgraded features. But considering I currently have a rooted Droid running an overclocked 2.2 ROM with quadrant scores topping all recent handsets, I'm thinking that I can easily wait until next summer when the newest Moto Droid comes along.

As nice as Droid X may seem now, I can only imagine the next iteration that likely includes LTE. I'm pretty sure I can hang on to my (old school) Droid love for 12 more months.

I go back and forth on the Droid. I'm rooted and enjoying the the most of my droid. Sometimes it opens in my pocket and that makes me think I'm starting to not like it. Then there's the times where it's the perfect form factor and the perfect case (seidio Inno).

Then again, sometimes I think I would enjoy the large screen of a newer phone like the Incredible for things like navigation and multimedia. It's a toss up really, and ultimately there are so many phones to choose from now days it really comes down to when you get bored with your phone and what's best on the market come that time.

One thing I do know is that they sure aren't making it easy to upgrade with the high the MSRP phones carry and all the contract hooplah.

I just got my droid a couple weeks ago for $48 at Walmart. I couldn't be any happier. I will be happy with this phone for a while. Bottom line is that with phones, there is something newer and better coming out every 3 months. Droid is a well made phone and does everything I need and then some.

The Droid X looks nice but I need a physical keyboard. Droid 2 is what I'm looking forward to.

My thoughts exactly. Got mine 6/16 and i aint lookin back. Bigger screen on the x looks nice, but it'll eat more battery and i already have a tv.

I can't agree more! I just got finished watching a hi def full length movie on my Droid! This phone can do so much, which the phone I had before this was an old flip LG chocolate. I never thought that I would be able to have all my music, watch movies, watch flash sites, play flash games and much more directly from my phone. Oh and the fact that at any time my Droid can turn into a wifi hotspot. Yeah I'm still happy with my moto Droid and I don't think I'm gonna get the Droid x when it comes, because, as we have all seen from previous android phones, there will be something else coming in just another month or so.

The great thing is that the Droid can still run any program well. Right now the only advantage to the Droid X is the screen and better camera. Once the Droid becomes too slow to run programs or get operating system updates, then it will betime to upgrade.

Next time I buy a phone, I will make sure to test the physical keyboard before I buy it. I really liked the idea of having a physical keyboard, but after getting the Droid, I never ever use it.

The keys are too flush and small for my big fat fingers to easily manage. On screen keyboard all the way for me.

That's really the only thing I don't like about my Droid.

I have tried and tried and tried to get used to the physical keyboard. Unfortunately, I just cannot type on it with any sort of speed or consistency.

I did get the Game Gripper, so I can still utilize the keyboard for something productive, whenever I feel like playing some NES games (King Hippo, watch your back).

Since rooting my phone I have had a lot more experience with the keyboard since you need it when you log into your account and for the longest time I didn't realize terminal emulator had a soft keyboard, so I have gotten more used to where things are. Doesn't change the fact that my accuracy is terrible and I am ALWAYS hitting buttons around the ones I want. Very frustrating.

I regularly hold typing "competitions" between the soft and hard keyboards and soft wins every time.

I hear this a lot and I agree that day-to-day I use the software keyboard exclusively (especially since getting Swype), but I like having the hardware keyboard as a "just in case" scenario. The extra few ounces and millimeters as a trade off don't bother me in the least.

I used to exclusively use the physical keyboard, because my fingers were too big for the vertical software keyboards and i hated how the horizontal one filled the whole screen. But then a few days ago i finally got Swype and now i rarely, if ever use the physical keyboard.

Using the keyboard as a grip? That's not odd I do that all the time. So does my friend.

I have had a Moto Droid since October when it was released. I love the phone, have it rooted overclocked etc. but I used a family member upgrade for this phone, so now mine is officially up so I am for sure getting the Droid X. I love the Droid, but I dont want the keyboard, the big screen is amazing to look at it seems, and the processor is the best on any smartphone (arguably with the iphone4). I am for sure going Droid X, but I think I will hang on to my Droid (Just cant let it go).

TBH, I am not sure I want another phone - at least not until someone makes a kickass phone like this one - with no Sense, No MotoBLUR, just good old fashioned Android dessert goodness.

This is one of the key reasons the Droid is still a great phone almost a year after it's release. It's one of the reasons I'm not interested in the Droid X. Other than the N1, have any phones since the Droid offered "plain vanilla" Android?

Yes yes yes, I'm in total agreement with you as I too bought my on Nov 6. I love my physical keyboard even if I don't always use it, depending on my mood. I definitely don't want any user interfaces such as those you mentioned on my phone. Maybe the most important benefit of all is the Droid community that all share the same passion as I.

To simply put it the Droid has everything packaged into one phone. I think so highly of my phone, that it will take a phone with similar features to this one plus a HDMI output, Bluetooth version 3.0 or higher and a 10 or 12 megapixel camera for me to consider switching.

Seriously, I would like a bigger screen, I would like more RAM, and I would like extra storage (like 8GB built in...of course, I still only have a 16 GB SD card...I'm cheap, what can I say

I feel like the Droid has been forgotten. When people talk about the high-end Android devices...the Droid isn't even mentioned anymore. But I didn't buy my Droid to go along with public opinion.

The Droid sent the Android OS into the "elite" status that it has today and for good reason. This phone still rocks and although it is not known as being "the latest and greatest", it is still a very capable device!

Look at the Eris. Now I feel bad for the Eris owners cause it is so out-gunned by every phone that is released. The Droid can still hang with the new toys. I'll upgrade sometime in 2011 but I'm not going to pull the trigger until I see a phone that I HAVE TO own! The EVO, DroidX, and Incredible....don't have enough to make me want to leave my Droid just yet.
