Root ROM/OC addiction. I think I may have one...

I'm all messed up, man. My replacement Droid arrives in less than 24 hours and I'm getting ready to install a new ROM and kernel on my "old" phone as soon as I finish this post. tomorrow at this time, I'll be unrooting one phone and rooting a new one.

It truly is a sickness. :willy:

I was doing so well... attending all the R.A. meetings (Romaholics Anonymous), my sponsor was so proud.

And then came Froyo...

I couldn't resist the leak, then I wanted to FLY, took a sip of some Kangerade (OK 2 sips, but they were different flavors), and before I knew it I was riding the Beast again. Now admitting I've hit rock bottom just reminds me there is a Sapphire in my future.

Recovery is not a 12 step process, it's the 2 headed monster that feeds my habit.

Oh well, at least I've got friends here ;)

it's so true. i feel antsy if i haven't loaded a new ROM in a week.

it's for good reason tho: with every new ROM, i get new, valuable features. the features totally feed the addiction...

I've flashed more than my share of ROMs, and I like doing it. But I don't agree that each new one released has "valuable" features. Maybe bling ... but not valuable features.

Just rooted Monday and, no lie, have gotten nothing done INCLUDING work for the past 2 days (glad I work from home). I've done nothing but test what my phone can handle, load new ROMs, back up, screen shot, and gloat. Its been pretty bad. And my husband wanted to root his phone ASAP after seeing how much enjoyment it brought me, jumped right into it, had a few issues (SU permissions, ROM mgr not loading, CWM flaking out) so I had to take over and sent HIM to the grocery store for a few things for dinner. I had Kangrade v 1.0 (for now) green theme loaded with the p3 lv 1100 kernal before he got back. If I'm flying thru the manual process now, after 2 flippin' days, I can only imagine what sill happen when I break in ROM manager premium today and can load new ROMs like that. ::Sigh::

I, too, am glad I have friends here and a trusting environment to share these feelings and tendencies with. Group hug? ;)

Glad to know I'm not the only one dealing with this addiction. Since June 5th (the day of the initial Froyo ROM release) it's been really bad. I'm a teacher whose last day of work was June 4th, meaning I've had lots of "alone time" with my phone lately. (My wife is at work during the day.) So immediatly after my morning run, while I'm sitting with my coffee and breakfast, I'm on this or some other forum and flashing/tinkering with a new ROM. And again in the afternoon, once I've finished lifting weights, I'm back to tinkering with my phone. Flashing ROMs has become my new post-workout cool-down routine. :D

And since yesterday I've been checking every forum, blog, and constantly refreshing my Twitter app on my phone to see if there's been a release of an offical, from-source Froyo ROM.

i stick by my original statement. i was trying to think of the really valuable things i have gotten from ROMs, so here's a brief list. what else can you guys think of? do you have a favorite?

- overclocking: the original reason i rooted and went to the Beast so many months ago. the performance improvement is still the single biggest reason to root for me.
- other performance improvements
- battery life improvements (eg using lower clock speeds in sleep mode and using longer WiFi poll times)
- higher quality video recording
- wireless tether: saved my booty several times
- 2.1 and all its features early (eg usable exchange support)
- animated GIFs in the browser: until i used CM i didn't realize how much i missed this
- flash
- 2.2 and its features early

as i insinuated, i think overclocking is my favorite. 2.2 is definitely the coolest one right now tho ;)

I'm still considering myself a noob...although I joined the forum the day I got my Droid (release day) and have been addicted to reading and learning ever since, I just took the leap and rooted this week....so with That being considered I only have had a few days to play and determine what my likes and dislikes are.

So far, I'm with you on the OCing. Even as I type this on my stock keyboard I'm amazed at how fast it is. I'm part of the group that can only Max at 1 ghtz or my little robot has a shit fit. Don't get me wrong I'm not to the point of complaining (yet).

I haven't had a lot of luck with flash sites, partially bc I've drawn a blank on what sites to go to that it might actually work with. It does work, but obviously not to the full potential.

I'm really digging the designed themes that JRummy has for Kangerade. Despite being an all out geek, I'm still a girly girl and I adore the pink theme.

I also like the new capabilities like wifi tethering although I haven't had to use it yet.

All in all, I'm pretty sure the bragging rights I have over my family and friends that have the iPhone is my ultimate pleasure though.

Now if I could just get my Droid to do my engineering homework and cook dinner I'd be set!

Try the television network websites. Most offer full episodes in HQ flash format (not mobile optimized.) . Be warned, this is the most taxing use of the droids hardware and software I've yet encountered...it pushes the cpu, gpu, AND radio to near max load all at once.

Yeah, this doesn't work for me. It gets stuck at a black screen and never loads. I have 10.1 beta 3.

Is it bad that I've been looking forward to tonight and this weekend just to feed my addiction??? Anyone? Is this what it's gonna be like?! Is this real life?! ;-)

and what's the word? Have you loaded the new freshie source 2.2? I wanna know what's in store for me tomorrow morning :)

It is *NOT* a sickness. I can be cured of sicknesses!

I was doing so well... attending all the R.A. meetings (Romaholics Anonymous), my sponsor was so proud.

I couldn't resist the leak, then I wanted to FLY, took a sip of some Kangerade (OK 2 sips, but they were different flavors), and before I knew it I was riding the Beast again. Now admitting I've hit rock bottom just reminds me there is a Sapphire in my future.

Feh. I skipped the meetings b/c My Nandroids always needed updating. I kept having to update 5-7 .APKs a night, and hell, I've gone through more ROM manager updates than I can count (and I can count to a million, ever since the 2nd grade)....

I just got a droid about a week ago from an eris. I went rom crazy for the first few days. I did stock 2.1 for a day then I decided to try rooting and froyo. I think the next 3 days my phone spent more time loading/backing up roms and rebootong than it did on.

I waited about a month and a half - mainly because I hurt my back right after getting my DROID, and could not spend long periods of time at the computer. It sure sucked, having to take Incompletes in all 6 of my classes Fall Semester, then come back Spring semester, having to make up 6 finals, plus take all the rest of my classes, get ready for the Senior exit exam...and here I was all of Jan doing nothing but rooting and trying ROM after ROM after ROM....

I've flashed more than my share of ROMs, and I like doing it. But I don't agree that each new one released has "valuable" features. Maybe bling ... but not valuable features.

Hell, you and I have done more than our fair shares - and the next 10 guys behind us....

Are you kidding me? I am looking forward to next weekend - cause it is gonna be a 4 day weekend for me!!!!!!!

I don't have a ROM addiction, I swear I can stop when ever I want!

Ok my backups done....got to go....I'm not flashing another new ROM today, I swear.

Right - you just choose to carry on? Me, I don't even bother acknowledging the existence of a problem. That way, I got nothing to feel guilty over. :p
