HTC's response finally came. Basically they know about it, are working on it and told me they cannot guarantee a replacement would not have the same issues. Relevant part of the email below.

I stopped by my local Sprint store. The dude working there had never heard of the issue. He then pulled out his EVO and the bottom glass was not recessed and sitting flush with the frame. I don't think most people are noticing even if their screen is a bit off. Oh well, still a kick ass phone!

HTC response:

Hello Andrew, Thank you for taking the time to contact HTC America Technical Support via E-Mail with your inquiry about your EVO 4G. HTC has received some reports regarding this issue, and are currently analyzing the potential causes. This issue should not affect the operation of the device. Most customers are not reporting any issue related to this problem. Additional information will be provided after we finish our investigation of the issue. As for a replacement device, you will need to contact your service provider to inquire about receiving a replacement device. HTC cannot guarantee that the replacement device that you receive will not have the same issues you are currently experiencing. I apologize for any inconvenience this situation may have caused you.

This photo shows what it will lead to. I'm assuming the phone wasn't tampered with, but the extent of the damage makes me think otherwise..

Usually I've been pretty laid back about the issues. 30 fps cap, I'll live with it. Little rattling when I tap the back - annoying but just don't tap it. Bad Battery, make some adjustments (sacrifices).

But today when I noticed the slight light leakage. A little on the bottom, and some on the left side *about an inch up the side. This annoys me.

I didn't have the light leakage for the past week, this just occurred. And I worry that it will only get worse. I bought two cases, both with the minimalist feel, but the light leakage isnt hidden by my cases.

What to do? I do love the EVO but I am almost ready to ditch this and go to Verizon w/ the Droid X. I just really don't feel like losing my number. And it seems hard to do. Or I could get a replacement from Best Buy, but it'll probably have different issues.

I exchanged my 003 build phone that had minor light leakage, and guess what? My new replacement has worse light leakage.

I'm never buying an HTC phone ever again after this one. It's a disgrace.
If you are so unhappy, why not start your crusade of no more HTC devices now since we are all in the 30 day return window........

I bet you will by another HTC device in your lifetime as proven by keeping your EVO.

That's my fear. I am going to wait a little longer and hopefully the build quality is a bit better in two weeks.

I won't go so far as saying I'll never buy an HTC product again. I really do love the EVO. I can live with many of the "claimed" issues. But I can not deal with the light leakage. They should have the capacity to resolve this issue.

And they will. I e-mailed HTC and was e-mailed back twice and called. They said they're looking into a solution with the engineering team and will get back to me when one is found. They are going to make this right for people.

At this point, just don't return any more devices for this issue. We know that all EVOs out there have a chance to have this problem - to varying degrees - so returning it is useless. Just contact HTC.

That's my gameplan as well.

I think a lot of people are returning phones that don't even have light leakage. I'm noticing that a lot of people are claiming that they have light leakage. But it is the menu buttons shinning onto the screen if you are looking flat from the top of the EVO. This is not light leakage! This is actual normal, annoying but normal.

This thread is obviously a little old but I thought I'd post the response I got from HTC just today.

HTC said:
We do apologize you are having this issue with your device, however currently it is something we are still looking into so we can resolve the issue as quickly as possible. We understand how much of an inconvenience this is for you. We will be in touch with you as soon as a fix is implamented Thank you, Milo

I am taking this to mean they have NOT "implamented" a fix yet? As I believe they said they HAD in late June? Hmm...

No fix yet, still under "investigation." I'm on the call-list from their escalation department when the "investigation" has concluded. If you ask me, there's not too much to investigate, but more power to 'em.

I have a question as I am starting to notice some slight light leakage on my evo. If they do conclude the investigation, and implement a fix, how will they fix it for previous buyers such as us. Will we have to ship our phone to them first, and wait for a few weeks, or will we receive the phone and then ship our old units back to them. I am confused on the process.

Also, how did you get a hold of HTC to notify them of the problem ?
