Looks like Samsung is introducing a new OS to rival Android.

Kind of annoying...I hope this doesn't affect their willingness to provide Android updates to the Moment.

There are already too many smartphone OS's on the market for all to succeed. The iPhone will remain solid, blackberry will have its place and Android will dominate mainly because it's free to the phone makers. It will be rough sledding for WebOS, WM7, Symbian, Maemo and Bada to grab market share. Bada like Maemo and Android is Linux based, so development should be relatively cheap. At least it won't cost Samsung too much when it goes Bing. My guess is Bada and Maemo will be released in a few devices to justify their development costs and then fade gently into the night.

I wouldn't write it off yet, they might have some tricks up their sleeve. There was a time when no one thought that a non Palm/Blackberry/WinMo OS would be successful, but both Apple and Google proved that wrong.

I doubt it. Samsung has already taken a large stake in the Android market, with millions of customers globally using Samsung AndroidOS devices. Samsung also has more Android devices slated for release in the next year. It would make no sense for them to drop support for a product, after already spending capital in development of devices supporting said product. Unless we see a sudden announcment of Samsung stopping development of said devices, I feel we have nothing to fear.

Also, Samsung can develop a new OS and still run development for Android. It's not like they only have so many developers and would have to pull devs from Android to their own. I'm guessing, considering this will be Linux based, they will hire a seperate team to work on it.

I hope this is the case because as stated in some of the articles Samsung gets nothing from the market place of these OS. I feel that Samsung is going to get greedy and instead of supporting Android OS they are simply just going to let it be while they focus on promoting the new OS.

i thought of this left out in the cold scenario for the samsung moment but id like to consider a more positive outcome. like someone mentioned theres already a couple of good OS's out there like webos, iphone, android and WM. that would mean that the samsung os would have aim to be better than all three. sort of like WEBOS came out with iphone os on its cross hairs. so we can assume this will be a good OS . really there is no indication they will release some crap that cant compete with the Mobiles of today.
now if your concern is that you wont have android 2.0 lets consider
this os is probably 6-8 months away. any sooner and it would mean that they have done alot of work to spit this thing out fast but no real way of telling. so its still likely that they can come out with 2.0 for the older phones and BADA for their new hardware. after all they have 190,000 employees world wide.

considering Droid with 2.0, i can guess updates for HTC phones would becoming in the next 3 months.(again a estimate) so BADA would have to be good enough to compete with android 2.0 and be strong enough to compete with WM7. if this is a estimate of 6 months then i would assume that the MOMENT would be rooted and dissected for any rom you decide to put in it.
the bad part.
that means the MOMENT with no 2.0 would be on 1.5 ( immature OS) for 6 months then be with another young OS (bada).moreover it would be competing with phones that would be made to draw attention to the market,so expect 8 megapixel amoled 800x480 3MM slide out phones or something along those lines. updated hardware usually blinds people from mediocre software (HD2). leaving our fat moments lonely.

the good news is that bada is an open os. much like the android. so what we can be looking at here is a situation more like Linux distros for the mobile market, something like Ubuntu , Fedora and others. if this is the case then we all win

besides its probable that if you have a HTC phone youll be trying to get BADA on it and if you have a samsung phone youll be running android.this is the nature of everyone that loves to hack phones

Samsung has already officially announced that it estimates that 30% of their phones will be running Android next year. Then there's this-

Rest easy. It's not even certain that the US market will see any Bada based phones.

Good point. More than likely Samsung is doing this to appeal to markets where Android hasn't (and probably won't for some time) seen much exposure. Either way, WM is headed for the chair!

I don't think Samsung will be able to afford not to support Android. If they don't provide adequate support for Android they'll lose huge market share to the other phone manufacturers who will be providing support for Android. It would be a huge lose-lose if they disenfranchise the current Samsung Android phone owners.

Worst case scenario is that I'll be using the Moment rooted, or unrooted, until this time next year, when I'll be able to get new 2 year discount pricing on another Sprint Android phone, since I'm a premier customer with the Everything Data plan.

So I'm not too worried.

Samsung is going to have a hard time selling their system. Even if it's a great system, better than Android, It's too little too late to grab any thunder from Android. It's a typical stretching of the corporate ego. Samsung thinks it can expand into OS, only time will tell but I think they would be better off putting their resources elsewhere.

maybe i am wrong in my thinking...but my fear is not in the hardware. It would be the OS and Android is not going anywhere. so if Samsung should no longer support the hardware....then worst case is i will have to another phone...and as long as the Android OS is around it should be an easy transition. just like buying a HP laptop, then a toshiba laptop etc. if you are using windows in the laptop then it is easy to switch...So as much as i would like the hardware to remain supported...it is usually the OS i worry about...and it won't be long that i would probably want the newer phones anyway and it might not be made by Samsung. I don't think Samsung would like that...with a huge android buyers market....good luck and take care....
