Should I get an Evo now or wait?

I have been with Sprint for a while and can upgrade my phone. I was wondering if I should just go ahead and get an Evo or should I wait about a month for the dust to settle with all the needed updates. I have been reading posts about the Evo, and although there seems to be a few issues many of them seem to easily taken care of. I know very little about the Android Operating System so I thought it would be in my best interest to tap into the collective intelligence of this forum. Thank you!

All I can say is yes, a few problems. But what? Affecting how many of the hundreds if thousands sold? Just not many. Most have no issues.

It is an amazing phone. One I would have felt really kinda dumb just "waiting" for.

But only you can decide. What any of us might say really doesn't matter. But I am grateful every day I have her.

Well its all on you and if the EVO is what you want go for it,its just a phone you have 30 days to return it.you only live once, just live.

I think it's pretty safe to say the dust has settled. I think the current delay is HTC's way of addressing some of the assembly line issues and the next batch should be as good as it gets. I'm definitely getting mine the next time it's on sprint.com. The wait has been just too painful reading about all the fun you guys are having! I'll be getting the squaretrade insurance so no matter what I can always get a new one if I run into any problems.

I hope that is the case because I am on my Sprint store's waiting list for the next batch to get swapped out. This will be my third Evo when I got swapped out...

As far as the Op, get the phone. It's great.

I cannot upgrade until July 1st, but I have every intention of purchasing the excellence that is the EVO 4G. And besides, if you are a premier customer you can upgrade in a year when the next best thing is around.

I completely disagree. I don't see the advantages at all, unless you are that enthralled with the AMOLED.

What makes you say that the Galaxy is better? I'm being completely serious. Because I'm starting to lean towards getting one myself even though I don't like keyboards, but from what I hear, it's processor is better/faster with the hummingbird, plus I think I read that is has an actual GPU which makes it better for games.

The final reason is that I hear lots of people using things like Snesoid and etc... complain about phones that don't have a physical keyboard like the EVO so that's what's making me reconsider which phone I want.

There's nothing incomplete by any stretch of the imagination with an EVO.

Here's what waiting for the Galaxy S Pro will get you:

1. better graphics

2. faster cpu+gpu

3. physical keyboard in addition to glass

4. sim card rumored

5. better battery time

For what it's worth - I came from a Samsung Moment, meaning - AMOLED screen and pull-out keyboard.

The Samsung AMOLED screens are always beauties. But if you just go for beauty and drop the tech-talk, there's nothing wrong with the EVO's LCD screen - personally, I think it looks great. It does lack just a little of the vibrancy of the AMOLED - just a little. Trust me, it's not the huge deal you read about. AMOLED screens are less power thirsty, so expect a little power savings there.

I was at first leary of going strictly to typing on glass - I've had a slide-out keyboard for years. I don't miss it one bit.

If it includes a sim card slot then the Galaxy _might_ be world-capable - the US is pretty much the big user for EV-DO. Do you travel a lot?

That leaves faster cpu+gpu. The Galaxy S Pro is expected to include Samsung's Hummingbird processor. That's a full technology generation later than the EVO's Snapdragon. If they do that, expect it to be much more responsive and much better graphics - a LOT better.

But - until they're out, we won't know.

I won't be trading in my EVO. I think it's almost everything I could want in a phone and more.

Would I take a Galaxy S Pro over it?

Very tough call. Probably not.

The EVO has a bigger screen - by .3" - anyone who says "only" to that difference, I invite to you to mask off your EVO by that amount and tell me you're still OK with it. Personally, I wouldn't be.

The EVO lacks a pull-out keypad. I no longer care. I no longer see it as missing an option, it's just more streamlined than any slider.

The EVO's processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8650.

Snapdragon 8650=Scorpion Core plus (AMD Z430 GPU plus 600 MHz DSP core (floating point, if I'm not mistaken))

The Galaxy S Pro uses the Samsung S5PC110 (Hummingbird) processor. Its GPU is a PowerVR SGX540.

That's way above the Droid X's OMAP 3630 (SGX530) or EVO Snapdragon 8650.

For gaming, you may be interested in a GPU 3D rendering spec called "millions of triangles per second" - I'll call them Mtps.

Here's a rundown of some various phone's spec for that:

The Snapdragon 8650 is rated at 22 Mtps.

The Palm Pre with a PowerVR SGX 530 is rated at 14 Mtps.

The iPhone 3GS with a PowerVR SGX 535 is rated at 28 Mtps.

The Samsung Galaxy S processor is said to do a whopping 80 to 90 Mtps (like a Snapdragon 8672 in that regard).

I'm not a gamer - but if you're a serious one, then yes, the Galaxy S Pro should be expected to completely trounce an EVO.

The semiconductor-process technology in the Samsung, being a generation later than that in the EVO, along with the AMOLED screen, gives us the expectation of better battery life.

By the way:

I am really hating the endless Android pundits running websites and publishing fluff articles making life difficult for people like you.

Now they have people believing that only certain phones have GPUs - yes, that's true. ALL of the top-line smartphones have them. Every one.

And - these are not industrial workstations, they're mobile devices, so forget what industry pundits are selling with the "separate GPU" rap. The CPU, GPU, DSP module and more are integrated into a single package called SoC - "system on a chip" - on these phones.

If I were you, I would wait a couple of months while going to the stores and spending an hour or so playing with the Droid X, Galaxy S and Evo (Even an Iphone if that floats your boat). See which one fits you the best and make a decision from there. Once they got you, they got you so make sure you make the right decision.

I rushed out and bought an EVO because my bro-in-law hyped it up and I saw some vids on youtube with HDMI/Qik/Fring and couldn't resist. I had no idea the Droid X or Samsung were coming out. If I had this is what I would have done.

After looking at all of them, I'm not convinced I would have chosen either of the other two all things considered. IMO the EVO is more versatile and can do all of the major functions (Video Calls, 4g, HDMI, Hotspot) I also really like the scenes ability to have several whole different setups for your phone. Neither the Motorola or Galaxy can provide all of that, though they may shoot better video or play games better, that's fine I don't think the Samsung is attractive and no video calling is a huge minus for the Motorola so the Evo, (with it's flash browser and camera) doing everything well, fits me . But does it fit you?

I say wait a couple of months because you should see how the public receives the other two phones as there are bound to be issues, so just wait till August if you can and see which one excites you the most. All of the EVO's issues are on the table, now see how the other two stack up. Remember, nothing is garaunteed, everyone thought the Iphone would be deadset reliable and without many issues, but that is far from the case.

I agree with heavychevy, if you are on the fence about the EVO at all, you should wait until the end of the summer. If you can, wait until the fall/holiday season and survey the field from there. 2010 will go down as the year of the smartphone, as there are some really cool devices and technologies slated to drop later this year (more powerful chips, more Android-based devices, and even the Windows Phone 7). So as much as I would love to exclaim, "Get the EVO!!! Dis phone is siccc!!!" the rational side of me would advise you to sit tight. Like another poster said, EVO has problems, but many of them will be remedied by OTA software tweak and eventually, Froyo (Android 2.2). All of these new superphones will have their issues too. There is no such thing as the "perfect" smartphone and at some point you're gonna have to take the plunge...

For what it's worth, I bought the EVO because I just couldn't stand my Hero anymore (good phone but too slow; screen too small), and the EVO was simply the natural progression for me. I like the EVO and it will be my phone at least until next fall when my contract expires. Best of luck in your smartphone search!

I'd take the Samsung Galaxy S over the Evo except for one thing: I don't want to root my phone, and HTC Sense (and the accompanying widgets) is FAR superior to Samsung's custom UI. Samsung's iPhone imitation UI pisses me off: part of why I like Android is that it doesn't have the iPhone UI! Otherwise, the Samsung Galaxy S is a great phone with comparable (and sometimes better) features.

As for the OP, I'd wait a bit. I purchased my Evo launch weekend even though I had a month to go in my AT&T contract, and I'm wishing I hadn't. Not because I dislike the Evo - it's a great phone! - but I'm definitely unsatisfied with the current build quality. I've got screen separation, nearly unusable WiFi, and a nearly unusable FM radio. Add to that the things I just wish I knew about before purchasing, like the 30fps cap or the terrible "HD" video quality. You're at least aware of all these potential issues and can make a more informed decision.

If taking videos with your phone is important to you, you might want to wait and consider the Samsung Galaxy S. Otherwise, I'd go with the Evo and wait a bit to see what the next batch is like in terms of build quality. The screen separation is very annoying but something I can live with, but the poor WiFi reception is something that still makes me strongly consider returning my phone.

I tell this to everyone who asks me should I get an Evo like yours...

It's your phone not mine, I won't be the one who has to look at it everyday. I would walk into every carrier's store and spend some time with the phones play around with what's avaiable then do research on upcoming phones and decide for myself.

I picked the Evo after doing extensive research and I have 0 regrets, not only that but there are alot of developers backing the Evo over on XDA so things will only get better, but again the choice is yours to make not ours.
