Why did HTC put a 16bit 65K color LCD on this device? Droid X has 18bit 24 million. Both phones $199

What's HTC's reason for using a lower quality screen than every other manufacturer making high end smartphones?

I was really looking forward to buying an EVO mid May but then it released and the problems and shortcomings popped up. Now we have a flood of smartphones coming out.
I really want to use 4G in my area and a front camera is pretty appealing to me so maybe I'll wait to see if the Galaxy S Pro keeps the front camera and then make my decision.

You should stay with Nextel. Their phones have what, 16 colors? Or, get an iPhone. I hear it's a magical device.

I'm looking to upgrade from my no longer needed Nextel ancient Blackberry Curve to a current high end smart phone. I'm trying to decide between the EVO, Galaxy S Pro, and Droid X. Samsung's press event is Tuesday and hopefully we'll gain some information about the Galaxy S variant coming to Sprint.

The Droid X certainly trumps the EVO in every benchmark test.

Seriously some of you Forum members really need to relax. Guy is asking a valid question. Why did HTC cheap out on some parts of the EVO. Lemme guess you all have magical EVO's with absolutely nothing to say if someone asks a question based on how the phone could have been better. That's what a forum is for, for people who don't know to ask questions. Maybe HTC has a reason, maybe they don't? Maybe an intelligent person who understands the way the phone really works will say...Nope HTC couldn't use that, because of xyx, etc! Some of you Sound exactly how Apple fanboys sound when you ask them a question about there precious iPhone. If you don't have the Answer to something, you should keep it moving.

Sorry Brandon, I don't know the Answer. But my screen has pretty good color as far as I can see, and it is one of the best phones I've used so far. Even with some of its short comings.

Thanks Sean. Yea I agree the phone has a good screen and 65k colors is PLENTY for whatever you need to do with the phone. But lets not pretend like anyone wouldn't rather have something better for the same price. I was just curious why every other manufacturer is using a higher quality screen and HTC decided to go with an inferior product on an otherwise high end phone.

Is this something that can be fixed? Or is this a hardware issue?

Probably has more to do with the fact that the same guy continues to bash the evo yet act like he really wants to get one. Just move on already. The grass always looks greener on the other side until done people get to walk around on said grass. And if you think HTC has quality issues you haven't owned a motorola yet.

I owned nothing but Motorolas (best handset maker for Nextel) before my Blackberry and they are nothing short of amazing in terms of build quality. My i580 performs flawless after being dropped a few times on concrete and submerged in water a few seconds multiple occasions. I use a wet saw most days to cut granite so often my hands are wet and/or have glue on them. My next phone will be in a case and have a screen protector for sure. Anyway, my fathers i680 is even better because it doesn't have the annoying external antenna and probably has better internal specs than my i580. I believe Motorola makes excellent handsets.

I for one am a little jealous at how the Droid X has been killin the EVO on some of these reviews. But serously, has anyone really takin a look at that thing. Granted its an Animal under the hood, but the EVO is awesome looking, and no, the Droid X is not. And after Froyo the EVO will be even faster then it is now. Some have to remember, the Droid may be so snappy because of the lite UI it has, you can't compare that to sense. And I for one really like sense, I'll take it over that new UI on the Droid, over Blur, ninja Blur, whatever.

However I would be curious to ask the HTC CEO why they didn't make the build quality better on the EVO, since the Legend and Desire have such outstanding build quality? But I'd much rather ask the CEO of BP what the hell he's gonna do about the oil spill, and mess they created?

Only a phone guys, bigger fish to fry in this world!

Seriously, I agree.

People get so defensive over the EVO.

Why do people come here that don't even own the phone to bitch about it?

Please do us a favor and get the Droid X...

They are the same price. Droid has better screen. Evo has a 4g chip or antenna, whatever u call it, and a front facing camera. The companies are trying to make them all the same price point to attract customers, but to do that there needs to be give and take in the specs. so any phone when compared to another will have advantages and disadvantages.

1. Any Evo vs. Iphone comparisons where the Evo doesn't come out on top is a conspiracy perpetrated by "biased Apple fanboys" who are "idiots" and should be boycotted.

2. Any Evo vs. another android phone comparisons where the Evo doesn't come out on top are based on tests that really don't matter in the real world and thus are "irrelevant".

3. Anyone who complains about "minor" issues such as light leakage, screen separation, poor battery, random reboots, grounding issues, unresponsive screen, or 30fps caps are either seeing things that aren't there or are just being "anal whiners".

4. Any Evo owner who has the nerve to post a thread about their personal experience or dissatisfaction with their Evo are "trolls" just trying to cause trouble because, afterall, this is an Evo forum.

5. Any Evo owner or Evo enthusiast who posts threads in the Evo forum detailing problems with the Iphone are one of the good guys.

6. Any Evo owner who posts an "I love my Evo", "Evo Rocks", "Evo FTW", or any other "feel good" thread should be thanked for the usefulness of their contribution to the forum.

Hopefully, this clarifies our position on the matter.

And you are posting this drivel here why???

Just go away.

It's not drivel.. it's a valid concern. On a big luxurious screen, why not use a top end display? Something tells me it could be due to display shortages...

Or maybe some of us were REALLY looking forward to this phone, and are quite disappointed with what was pushed out.

The looking forward to buying process was mid May. Reading comprehension is priceless.

"I was looking forward to buying an EVO mid May"

I see how someone could take it the way you did though.

how about

"Mid May, I was looking forward to buying an EVO."

Much better, thank you. I really wasn't trying to be a bitch, but I also can see how you could take it that way. Like I always tell my daughter:
"Text is such an unreliable form of communication. You can never hear voice inflection, or really read their true inference. Just call".
and still she texts..........
