Why hasn't HTC released a fix for the battery yet?

With all the talk about the battery life, I'm really curious why HTC hasn't released a fix yet. No doubt they are aware of the complaints. Does it take this long to figure it out and release a patch? I've read they did something similar for the Hero. How long did that take?

I still don't have the phone yet, but it would be nice to know that some kind of fix would be coming soon to take care of pretty much the only thing that most reviews complain about.

You'll get your wish Monday.

The problem here is that not 100% of all EVO owners have problem with the battery.

People use their phones differently and use more/less battery.
I have mixed results with the battery. One day Ill get only 8 hours of use, the others I will get phenominal use. All about the same usage. Download apps, twitter, listen to mlb at bat, xiia live, etc.

Here is a screeny that I just took.

Please have the phone first and then create this thread.

Are you kidding me?

Uh, no I'm not kidding. It's a perfectly valid question to ask by anyone interested in the phone, whether they have it or not. By your logic you might as well tell people to stop browsing this forum at all until they have the phone, since they won't benefit from any of this information if they don't have the phone in hand.

Right now Sprint is sold out of them, but even if they weren't, given that the battery is such an issue it seems like a fine enough reason to hold off on getting it until HTC addresses the issue. Why buy a product you know is problematic *before* an attempt to fix it has been made?

My concern is perfectly relevant for anyone with the phone, but just as relevant for anyone looking to buy the phone. So get over it and stop wasting our time with pointless comments like that.

Yea this whole battery thing isn't a glitch or anything so their is no "fix" for it. The phone is configured to just work. It is up to the user to make changes relative to how they use their phone.

HTC EVO FTW!!!!

That makes sense except from what I've been reading it seems like maybe there *is* an issue with how the battery is charging. Perhaps not, but if so then it's something HTC could fix.

It may not be 100%, but it has certainly been a major issue both in these forums and in reviews of the product. I would hope an issue would not have to be experienced by 100% of users before the manufacturer tries to fix it!

Certainly, some of the things that have caused issues with battery life are things that HTC could probably fix with an update (GSM>CDMA default, for example). So this concern seems pretty legitimate to me.

Where does it show what the update will fix?

The person who took that photo has mentioned what it lists the update fixes.

  • Improvements to Wi-Fi performance
  • Exchange Active Sync improvements which include a fix to issue including new account set up, PIN policy usage, and Exchange Server 2010 Calendar Sync
  • Addresses Social Networking Sync issue with Facebook application which can improve battery performance

The back channels said there was an issue with the Facebook for Sense that was causing poor battery life, maybe a sync issue.

Mine has been fine to great, on par with the Hero I had before (which is impressive given the screen and I am certain I browse more because of the larger screen).

Personally, the days I only get 8 hours before switching batteries I blame google for that navigation app, I used to have to really want directions to mess with the sprint app but when I can just hit nav, talk to the phone and have directions in less than 30 seconds I abuse it.

Uh, is that all for the battery? Is that really considered a "fix" to the battery issue?

See above, not everyone gets 4 hours out of the thing or get an iphone so you can count on a software fix for an attenuation issue.

It's true that with proper maintenance and setup you can get a full day out of this phone. The problem is the openness of the apps and how easy it is to multitask. Say what you will about iPhone closed system and limited multitasking, you can't accidentally run the battery down in 4 hours of it sitting on your desk and wonder what the hell just happened

It is a major issue and I believe a source of a LOT of problems for some users.

Dude relax, it's not even the 28th stop judging how good or bad a fix will be when the official changelog hasn't even been announced yet, they gathered those fixes from a leaked rumor. I'm starting to think you're on Steve Job's payroll, let's just want and see.

Yes it does take that long. There is a lot that goes into identifying the problem and troubleshooting it, then writing new code, testing the code, packaging it for an over the air update, etc.

My only battery problem is ME. I don't use ATK (I did in the beginning), my only change is that I run the OC widget. I forgot my phone at home yesterday. It was charged (while turned on) overnight, then spent 9 hours unplugged. I had ALL battery bars when I got home. I used my phone pretty heavily for a while (storms and weather updates, streaming maps in the basement and letting the kids watch youtube and play games. I still have 30% battery and I slept for 8 hours. That's 27 hours since charge so far....granted a lot is idle, but I am perfectly fine with that.

I can crush the battery in 8 hours too. I know exactly what does it. Non-stop use.

They really do need to fix the charging cycle issue. My power went out earlier today, and it must have occurred right as my evo was at the bottom of the non-charge cycle, and after 4 minutes, I was down to 91%. Not good.

Why is that an issue? That is how nearly all cell phones charge. Is your phone starting at 91% going to ruin your day?

Yes of course you think that. Anyway who suggests there are problems or complaints about something non-iPhone must obviously be an Apple fanboy.

When you start to speculate and downtalk a patch fix that hasn't even been announced to the public yet and start to throw gibberish around like does it really take that long you have to wonder.

I can tell you're no software developer but how about you wait until the 28th (you know the date when they said they'd release) before you start to make claims and ASSumptions, for the record the rate of which patch fixes are coming out for the Evo when compared to other phones has been astonishing. Just go look around and you'll see how far and wide fixes usually take to come out to the general public.
