Why did HTC put a 16bit 65K color LCD on this device? Droid X has 18bit 24 million. Both phones $199

1. Any Evo vs. Iphone comparisons where the Evo doesn't come out on top is a conspiracy perpetrated by "biased Apple fanboys" who are "idiots" and should be boycotted.

2. Any Evo vs. another android phone comparisons where the Evo doesn't come out on top are based on tests that really don't matter in the real world and thus are "irrelevant".

3. Anyone who complains about "minor" issues such as light leakage, screen separation, poor battery, random reboots, grounding issues, unresponsive screen, or 30fps caps are either seeing things that aren't there or are just being "anal whiners".

4. Any Evo owner who has the nerve to post a thread about their personal experience or dissatisfaction with their Evo are "trolls" just trying to cause trouble because, afterall, this is an Evo forum.

5. Any Evo owner or Evo enthusiast who posts threads in the Evo forum detailing problems with the Iphone are one of the good guys.

6. Any Evo owner who posts an "I love my Evo", "Evo Rocks", "Evo FTW", or any other "feel good" thread should be thanked for the usefulness of their contribution to the forum.

Hopefully, this clarifies our position on the matter.

I would use this as my sig if it would allow me lol.

Thank you....this sums up alot about this forum. i mean i love my evo as much as the next guy but its not the best in EVERY single category. everyone who has a dislike about the phone is not a troll.

Wow! Where do you live? I wasn't able to pick up my launch day Evo til June 4th.

i got my EVO in May :) May 20

I love my evo but the X is definitely the better device. HTC tends to choose cheaper parts to put together their phones. The snapdragons are nice but are nothing compared to other processors on the market. HTC doesn't go with these parts because of contracts and to make the devices more affordable.

If motorola released phones for sprint, honestly I would probably switch over

Or maybe some of us were REALLY looking forward to this phone, and are quite disappointed with what was pushed out.

Again, why are you in here to begin with? You own a Moment. If you are so disappointed in the Evo, hanging out in here bashing it every chance you get when you dont even own one is trolling and I will be reporting every one of your posts.

Go ahead an report me. Being critical of a phone isn't trolling. Perhaps you should re-evaluate the your definition of the word trolling. I'm dissappointed with HTC in general, because I personally held them in high regard coming from a 3x in a row HTC winmo lineup.

I am sorry but when you dont even own a product yet you do nothing but hang out in its forums posting nothing but negative garbage and arguing with anyone trying to be positive, that is trolling. So I can go into the Moment thread and rip it in every thread because I dont like the way it works and have issues with its build quality?

THe moment's build quality is more than solid. But I do show my critism of the moment as well, in the moment forum. So what, I can't keep my eye on a device of interest and be critical at the same time? Please. And please point out this "garbage". You can't, because it's all 100% Valid and true.

And you know what? Let's be completely honest here. Your just being childish because you got called out as a troll on this forum, and many other forums, and I highlighted that little fact. And now your on some sort of personal vendetta against me, and your trying to disguise it with skewed words and rhetoric. Not going to work pal. Drop it already, if we look at our respective post histories, who really looks like the troll here? Yeah, answer that, chief.

Sit down.

Anyway, I transferred the exact same picture to a touch pro2 and EVO to examine the quality and while i saw a lot of color banding on the touch pro2 the EVO didn't have any banding at all.

Here is the photo, this screen shot is taken from shootme with the picture zoomed in on my EVO. It was taken with the image zoomed in and after I swiped to go to the next picture, however since one wasn't there, it simply slid back into the previous photo, and when that happens, there is absolutely no color banding at all and the 24-bit picture appears to be 24-bit.

It can be found by simply typing color banding in a google search.

The first image is of 8-bit gradient
Second is 8-bit with dithering
Third is 24-bit.

Now if we had 16-bit screens, you would see banding would you not?

Someone run this test:

What's interesting is that loading the picture up in gallery and zooming in shows banding as if we do have 16-bit screens, however, if you zoom in and swipe as if you're going to the next picture, the banding completely vanishes, which leads me to believe that any 16-bit restrictions in place are not screen related but Android related.

Why would taking a screen shot show banding in one shot, but as the picture comes back from being swiped and the same screen shot is taken, there is absolutely no banding? Interesting? I think so.

I'm trying to decide between the EVO, Galaxy S Pro, and Droid X. Samsung's press event is Tuesday and hopefully we'll gain some information about the Galaxy S variant coming to Sprint.

Droid X -> Verizon

You couldn't pay me to leave Sprint for Verizon, but your mileage may vary.

While the Droid X is getting a reputation for out-benchmarking the Snapdragon processors (EVO, others), I flatly dispute it - see my link posted above, I call shenanigans!

I'm looking to upgrade from my no longer needed Nextel ancient Blackberry Curve to a current high end smart phone.

Personally, I don't think you could wrong with any of the choices on your short list - just in case you wanted any second opinions.

Samsung's Galaxy S Pro To Be Sprint's Second 4G Phone?
Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy S Pro gets detailed - SlashGear

The Galaxy S uses the Samsung S5PC110 (Hummingbird) processor. Its GPU is a PowerVR SGX540.

That's way above the Droid X's OMAP 3630 or EVO Snapdragon 8650.

That GSPro looks like it's gonna be one helluva phone. :)

If you have time, you could also wait for whatever's going to made with the Snapdragon 8672 - 1.5 GHz, dual-CPU - and oh yeah, 1080p video capable.

Qualcomm News and Events - Press Releases - Qualcomm Ships First Dual-CPU Snapdragon Chipset

FWIW - I went from an Ocean (feature phone, dual slider QWERTY - actually, a great phone for what it was), to a Samsung Moment (slide out QWERTY), to an EVO.

I mention that because work had me all set up to go with a BlackBerry, but I took a left turn to the Ocean, and found I could really fly on a decent slide-out keyboard. The Moment, by the way, was a step down in that department - a big one.

I was finding myself typing on glass more and more because I didn't like the Sammy keyboard at all, so I decided to risk going with the EVO.

For some reason, most people don't like its built-in keyboard, but I do, and find it's a breeze - and with Android you can always swap that out for whatever.

Anyway, I don't know what your experience or background level is at all, not trying to be patronizing, just thought I'd toss those impressions out there given that you mentioned you're still living with a Curve and don't know if you have any doubts about typing on glass only.

BTW - this is probably obvious - get a GMail account if you don't already have one, and play around with backing up your contacts to Google Contact at the GMail website. Do that ahead of time for your foolproof protection before changing platforms. Everyone has their experiences getting into Exchange on Android, some up, some down, but your Google Contacts is a lead-pipe cinch with Android.

Anyway - those are my opinions.

Many good lucks on your decision!

Question:
What are the EVO forums over on androidforums.com like?

Answer: <snip>

Having a bad day, reemas?

You think you got troubles? I used the word fragmented as a valid marketing term, and questioned some guy's opinion that the eVo was just the obvious choice over the iPhone because of how many Androids are going out every day.

Like any inexcusable idiot who just doesn't hang on Jobs' every word, I had no idea that "fragmented" was a popular flaming meme. But I sure know now.

I was branded as an dumbass iPhone fanboy, with all of the resplendence that goes along with that tag. Pretty good for someone who's never wanted or owned one. Oh yeah - I was also branded as calling Andy Rubin a liar - because the guy I was writing back to didn't provide a reference substantiating the claim - so I did. I just thought it was funny to point over at Yahoo News for the quote from Andy. I was in tears from laughing so hard while reading about how dense I truly am.

Just remember brother, we're all here for each other's amusement - and some of them just happen to be way more here than others.

PS - I rarely kowtow to holding down two different shift keys just to type the name of my phone. Since day one, I've mostly called it an Evo and I've been holding back from humpTexting it. I just couldn't resist, above. I think eVo has a certain comedy to it.

And now I made you think about that. Lame or not, I bet it was more fun for you than reading the post you quoted. ;)

I owned nothing but Motorolas (best handset maker for Nextel) before my Blackberry and they are nothing short of amazing in terms of build quality. My i580 performs flawless after being dropped a few times on concrete and submerged in water a few seconds multiple occasions. I use a wet saw most days to cut granite so often my hands are wet and/or have glue on them. My next phone will be in a case and have a screen protector for sure. Anyway, my fathers i680 is even better because it doesn't have the annoying external antenna and probably has better internal specs than my i580. I believe Motorola makes excellent handsets.

I'm not talking about build quality my friend. I'm talking about working quality and Motorola has put out some real stickers in that category. How about to visit the cliq and cliq xt forums around and see the endless list of complaints.

Almost as many as ip4 lol

haha. good stuff man. i mean, i think we (you, me, most of the members here) are on the same page.

i OWNED an iPhone 3GS, and I own Macs and I like Apple. but I own an Android phone, run windows, and also use gmail and it's features a lot.

like everyone else, I just am a picky consumer. it's my money, and i can't help but be disappointed AND excited over things.

to be honest, i don't create posts going "wow tethering is awesome" because it's a waste of time. for me personally, forums are a place to get advice, and help from others, so pretty much I only ask questions, or look for feedback on issues.

anyway, i guess we are the poster children for apple "phan" boys on this site, since we bring up quality issues.

anyway, i guess we are the poster children for apple "phan" boys on this site, since we bring up quality issues.

I saw this documentary on Woody Allen - they followed him around and if you could sit through it, the flow of invective-laced neurosis could give you brane dammidge.

So - even years later, the one part that I have never been able to purge from psyche, squirreled away in that same dark corner where we all hide the memory of the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard, was when the WoodMan referred to John Coltrane.

He said his last name like this kulTRAAAANE. And he freaking did it repeatedly.

Now - and I'm certain that everyone reading this is just in completely agreement with me and the only ones not about to thank me will eventually - the name of our phone is all wrong.

And we can fix it.

From now on, if anyone asks what your phone is, tell them it's an uhVOOOE. The first part goes really fast, almost more of an an aspiration than a vowel sound, and the VOE part is spoken throwing your neck back ever so slightly.

Think and speak as if you were looking down on some gauche Continental wearing white before the third Tuesday after the ninth Thursday before St. Crispins' Day.

"Say, what's that?"

"It's an uhVOOOE. You cawn get theam oun Sp-rint. They're evah so not cooommun, so not eyefone." (last word spoken nasally, and wrinkle your nose, too)

Remember - it's an eVo. Sp-rint just spells it wrong because they don't want to confuse the eyefone ca-rowd.

;)

PS - It really works. He's John Coltrane again - finally, the noise is gone! That just proves it - it's an eVo.

And if you look closely, yes, it's an emoticon.

Why not actually have some benchmark results... such as these:

YouTube - Droid X benchmark tests

Shenanigans!

Also if you have problems with those numbers for the EVO, I agree. They seem low. I'll show another video of the EVO doing benchmarks and still, it can't reach the numbers of the Droid X.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utnYpybdIKo&feature=player_embedded

More Shenanigans! I guess it's hard to believe that the Droid X is simply faster, especially with graphics. Hard to argue against video evidence.

Why would taking a screen shot show banding in one shot, but as the picture comes back from being swiped and the same screen shot is taken, there is absolutely no banding? Interesting? I think so.

Oh, the confusion - it gets better. I used this as my source:

http://origin.arstechnica.com/news.media/Colour_banding_example01.png

Dropped it into my sdcard/Downloads folder, browser over with Astro - first time, tried it with Astro Image Viewer - full screen - no banding on 24-bit example.

Exit Astro, went over to Gallery, pulled up the same thing - every permutation of playing with it - banded.

Back to Astro, opened with Gallery - banded. Go back, re-open with Astro View Picture - banding. Re-open with Astro Image Viewer - BANDING.

Could not repeat the process. Wanted to convince myself that I simply didn't see the banding that was there - but - given that I was skeptically looking for banding in the first place, I'd have noticed it. My first thought, was - OK, freeza's wrong, there's no banding if you open it with the right tool in the first place.

My experience mirror images yours.

So - I decide, I re-acquired the png, converted it to a high-quality jpg. I can't see either one unbanded.

Just weird.

Yeah. Thanks. That's the video I was referring to. Did you bother to read my link - that expression was a link, you know - or did you just decide to regurgitate the video?

Did you not read one word?

You clearly did not: "Hard to argue against video evidence."

Try again, this time, kindly read before judging. I'll even not rename it to avoid any confusion you might have had with it being a link.

http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/105351-htc-releasing-firmware-update-30fps-cap-lets-more-proactive-2.html#post1016816

Of course, if you already know it all, no reason for you read anymore, is there?

More Shenanigans! I guess it's hard to believe that the Droid X is simply faster, especially with graphics. Hard to argue against video evidence.

The question is WHY is it faster? Because the Droid X has a GPU (as Android Central points out)?

Because the Snapdragon 8x50 doesn't have a GPU? Wait. It does. A better one. And a better DSP module.

Yeah - the Droid X is faster on video. Much. But not 2.5x faster with a lesser GPU.

Why was it faster?

Read the link, see my take on it, tell me what you think.

And then tell me if you still arrive at the same conclusion that everyone is arriving at: Wow wee, wait until we see Froyo on that Droid X!

Betcha dollars to doughnuts, I won't be the only one calling shenanigans then.

PS - Congrats on your new Droid X, noticed from your sig you have one. Pretty nice, huh? I'm not knocking the phone - I'm knocking Android Central and every other reviewer. Which you'd have known if you just read before posting.

Pay no mind people...just another EVO-Less poster trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat and tolling our Forum..Plus he's very mad because Froyo and incredible haven't been mentioned in the same sentence lately. He just needs a Hug...lmaooo
