Overclocked ROM questions

I like the idea of roms like Zen and purehero as they come overclocked and speedy. My main issue with trying these is I'm wondering what the battery life is like with these? Running the CPU oc'd I would imagine sucks more battery, anyone wanna confirm or deny this? I'm currently on fresh 2.1.2 and though it is snappy, its really no different than the official 2.1 release I was running rooted and I'm looking for more now, just over 2 mflops on linpack if that helps clarify.

I always wondered about that before I started running Zen. I actually find the battery life to be a little bit better than it was with any of the fresh roms that I had run. I do have the Overclock widget set to throttle down, so I am sure that helps. It also does things a bit quicker, so I am not leaving the screen on for as long when I use it because it just doesn't need to be. When I use an app like music junk, and download a song, it takes about half as long as it did before to get the song downloaded. That is where I notice the speed of the overclock having the most effect. If the cpu is only running hard for half as long, you're bound to use less battery, I guess.

Oh sweet, I've got Zen up and running but I've hit a snag. When I use the Zen updater to try to update it prompts me to download it then boot to recovery, from this same menu, when it boots to recovery I get the yellow triangle with ! and the Android, I hit menu and it says it failed somehow, usb debugging is on as well, any ideas what's wrong?

I don't as the updater has worked well for me. I think that one of the guys in the Zen thread is having the same problem as you are, though. Maybe you could check that out and see if he's got a solution yet....

I've been running it for about a week without a serious issue. I miss my gmail app, but the stock app pushes, so no worries there. A few random FC's here and there, but no more than any Fresh Rom I have run. It is wicked fast, so that is why it stays on my phone. I also like that it is different, and very nice looking. I run LauncherPro, because I think the O'clocking messes with sense for me, but not everyone has that problem. I really like it a lot, and if you are willing to tinker a little bit to get it perfect, you will too!

EDIT>

When I clear my cache, I have about 35 to 40 mb free. (but I was told to not worry about the number as long as the phone is working ok, FWIW)

Well I know that not all roms are meant to be overclocked, if you overclock one that wasn't made to be I've heard it will actually slow it down. I tried out Zen and wasn't a fan, I'm now on purehero and so far love it. It's kernel is programmed to throttle between something like 240 and 710 without the use of setcpu or overclock widget and I've confirmed it working properly through system panel.

Anyone know if there is really a big difference with roms like aloysius that have one Rom that uses overclock and another without overclock they uses autokiller? Is the overclocked one really gonna be much faster?

i kno that setting your autokiller to aggressive it'll free up a lot of ram to make ur phone snappy..the oc just pushes ur phone's internal system to make it faster..doesn't have anything to do with ram..thus making it much hotter since it's being put to work.. could damage ur battery let alone ur phone using oc..autokiller is safer :)

If you are on fresh, then just flash fresh toast and run OC widget at 768mhz. You wont lose any of your settings or data and everything works. You'll get about 3-3.2mflops. I'm a light to medium user and I usually get 1 (sometimes 2) days out of a charge. Just underclock your screen-off timings to compensate for your screen-on timings- just don't go too low or you can have wake issues.
