Soo today I got the "low on space" notification and all that good stuff. I understand that there's no fix other than a hard reset, which I'm not willing to do. I don't know if this is related, but I am now unable to sync anything. I press "Sync all" and nothing happens, I sync just gmail and nothing happens. Programs are force closing on me, basically I think the phone believes it's low on space and so it's not performing any operations that may take up space/memory.

Any ideas what to do about this? I don't know if these are related, so I'd ask for any help on either issue individually. Thanks guys.

Because the reason I got this phone is to customize it and have it exactly the way I want it. I got it there, I don't want to restart it every 2 months and have to redo everything just because HTC can't get their shit together.

All a hard reset will do is clear all the data, it won't fix the problem. As soon as I customize it and rebuild my app-drawer, and get some use out of it, I'll be right back in the exact same situation. I don't want a temporary fix that requires me to do a full day's of work to get my phone back the way I want it every couple of months.

go into "manage applications" and clear the cache for all of them and the data for some.

Low on space? I have to ask... What the HELL are you installing that you already used up all the space? I have close to 150 apps and I'm nowhere near running low on space. Next question is why don't you root the phone and install some stuff onto your SD? Get yourself a 16 GB card. And if you fill that up, well... I don't know. But to me it sounds like your only option is hard reset, like you said you didn't want to do.

I'm nowhere near being low on space. I have 6.5gb (out of 6.6gb) free of the internal phone storage and 629mb (out of 748mb) of available space left.

And I do have a 16gb memory card that has almost 14gb free.

A good start would probably be to post in the main Inc section, this has nothing to do with accessories.

You're right, I didn't pay attention to where I was first, sorry.

Although this is a very aesthetically pleasing new accessory to my desk. :p

And again, I'm not low on space, so clearing the cache to all of my applications shouldn't make that much of a difference other than clearing up a few hundred kb that will soon be full again in a matter of weeks if not days.

Well that's pretty strange, then. Again, though, I really think your best bet is a hard reset. Download a backup app, backup all your apps and data, and wipe the phone. If you still have the same problem take it into the Verizon store and see if they'll give you a new phone. Unfortunately I wish I had a better answer

Good luck!

There is no better answer.

I had this problem a few weeks ago and of course VZW's only fix is a hard reset.

It was a pain and this shouldn't be happening when there is plenty of phone storage left on the phone. Almost 3/4 of my phone storage was available.

I had read somewhere that it may be an issue with HTC mail. It seems to balloon in size if you do not watch it. Some people were showing 60-70mb or more in size and even if they deleted data, trash, and cleared the cash it wasn't making much of a difference in that size.

I can't locate it at the moment but I remember seeing another person with this problem in another forum a few weeks ago. I believe it was discovered that the low space message was caused by bad app that had been recently installed. If you are able, maybe try uninstalling any apps you have installed in the last few days, maybe one of them is causing an issue. just an idea.

I dont understand why you arent willing to hard reset. All your contacts are or should be backed up either via Backup Assistant or gmail. All apps can be redownloaded. Take your SD card out and ull have ur pictures ect.

Berry2Droid:
Playing devils advocate and without taking anyone's "side" here, I think what has the OP annoyed (as I would be too) is that we should not have to perform a hard reset to fix a "low memory" issue when there clearly is enough memory.

As a matter of fact, one of the features of the Android OS that has been touted is its memory management...just sayin! ;)

OP:
I agree with BJ, there is no better answer right now!

I understand why he isn't willing to do a hard reset. Because it is a PITA to set everything back up again and download EVERYTHING over again (especially if he isn't on wi-fi) will probably take over an hour.

The fact that the phone even HAS this problem in the first place is absolutely amazing (not amazing in a good way, amazing in a BAD way).

But alas, he has no other real choice. I would definitely make it known to VZW and HTC that this is a serious oversight and at the least, should be looked into.

isht happens. factory reset and go about your day. VZW isn't going to replace the phone unless you do a hard reset anyway. And if a hard reset fixes it, then it's not a bad phone. You say you got all these apps... but how many are you actually using anyway? If you haven't already, get Astro file manager (if you can) and do an app backup to sd card. Also, if you can, download and use SMS Backup&Restore (dev Sitesh Rahu) to save your sms to your sd card.

Sure you'll lose all your personal application settings, which suuuuuucks, but life goes on. If you're worried about having to re-set all your home screens, then just write down what goes where or take pics of each screen so you can easily set them up again.

I admit a hard reset is probably my best option, but here's the problem I have with it guys.

Hard reset WON'T FIX THE ISSUE. Hard reset will clear my data and clear up space, then when I get back to this point in a month or two (where maybe 20% of my space is used) the error will come back. Hard reset is doing nothing but clearing my data so that I have to set it all back up, and have the same problem not too far down the road. THAT is the problem I have with hard reset. I don't want to go through all that trouble when it's not actually fixing any of the problems.

Look at it this way guys, if your screen was acting up and it took a hard reset to make it stop for a few weeks, and you had to do it every few weeks, would you put up with it? The only difference here is that it's the example above is hardware, wheras mine is software, does that really warrant a "hey, it's ok" attitude? I don't think so.

I've also noticed that any of my network actions are now force closing every time I try to open them. Gmail, Internet, Handcent, HTC mail.

HTC and/or google need to figure this out.

BTW I will be MUCH more willing to do a hard reset once Froyo comes out, as all of my app data will be stored on my SD card and I won't have to worry about losing anything but my screen layout.

Astro makes a hard reset take 15minutes max. I have over 150apps and It took me 15minutes to restore my phone when i went from moto droid ro DInc cuz of astro.

Electronics always have problems. Even when they arent supposed to.

Never know if it will fix it till you try. So you need to try or else tech support might not replace your phone.

Yep, back up via Astro or use Appbrain and export your app list. Might try a different SD card first just to rule that out however.

alright then, I already have astro, can someone please explain to me how to back everything up to make this as easy as possible?

I also got a new SD card yesterday, but was working fine all day yesterday and got the notification today, I doubt the SD cars is the issue, but am going to try doing a few things to see if that could be it too.

effing fantastic.

I just took the SD card out and restarted the phone to see if the message cleared. Now my phone is looping from the HTC Quietly Brilliant screen to the VerizonWireless screen. It won't boot up.

I literally just restarted it half an hour ago to get the S/N number to email HTC about the issue. WTF

Holly Crap not this! I have yet to receive my incredible yet and this was the very reason I bought the phone! I have to hard reset all the time with the Post that I have now. I only hope that this sort of thing is a fluck and does not happen to often. All of this said. Just hard reset it's really no big deal, heck i can be up and running in minutes! And it sure beats talking to tech support from Big Red Lol!!

I agree with the OP. This should not be happening at all. I can only guess that this was caused by a bad app but I cannot back that guess up. I know I started getting the issue a few hours after several app updated. But, after I did my hard reset and dled app again (I didn't dl all the apps I had before because I wasn't using all of them) it hasn't happened since. It has been less than a month since I did my hard reset but it was around the 43rd day I had the phone that I got the error message.
