Why I am disappointed of the HTC Desire.

I recently bought the HTC Desire instead of waiting for the iPhone 4. I own an iPod Touch 2nd Gen, but I wanted to try something new, hence the purchase of the HTC Desire. I bought the phone for approximately $700 without any contract, deal, provider etc.

I am some what disappointed of the HTC Desire. As an iPod Touch user, I am used to a lot of games and applications (running smoothly) on my device. Now, on the HTC Desire, the majority of the games are, in fact, laggy. And in addition to this, there's only 50-100 mb worth of installing games and applications on. I've only installed like 10 games/applications, and I'm already out of space.

I now regret my purchase of the HTC Desire, and wish I would have bought the iPhone 4 instead. But as I am only sixteen-years old, I can't afford buying another phone now. I am now stuck with the HTC Desire for 2-3 years.

I know the Desire is not meant to be a toy, but if it's supposed to be an "iphone-killer", then the device has to be able to run games smoothly. And updates has to be released when needed. HTC(/Google?) need to understand that if they're going to promote their Android Market, they have to include enough internal memory for this. Or at least make it possible to install games and applications on a memory card.

When android 2.2 comes out you can install apps on the sd card. You can do it now if you root your device but its technical and not without risk.

I agree the games aren't.up to much at the moment.

10 apps and out of memory doesn't found right. I've got 3 times that and have memory left.

Itmay be worth clearing your apps cache. Menu, settings, applicationst, manage applications.
T hen menu, sort by size. You can go into the.apps and clear the cache making more space.

Also download astro from the market. You can back up apps to sd card, uninstall the ones you font needall the time. You can install there anytime you need

...why did you have to pay $700--I'm assuming that's USD--when I paid only $530 for my N1, which is essentially the same phone?

Apart from that: most games that have data in the hundreds of MB don't put that data in the phone. They're loaded onto the SDCard. A cursory examination of large games' descriptions would have, uhhh, informed you of this.

As an iPod Touch user, I am used to a lot of games and applications (running smoothly) on my device. Now, on the HTC Desire, the majority of the games are, in fact, laggy.

1) The iTouch has a shitty resolution. Compare 320x480 to the Desire's 480x800. Do simple math. Yes Virginia, more resolution requires more processing power: news at eleven!
2) What games are these? If you're talking about Gameloft's games ported from the iPhone, then duh. They aren't optimized for Android--they never were--or in fact any hardware different from the iPhone. You know how a lot of Windows games ported to Mac OS X run like shit? Mind you, even then, on my N1--which again, has the same internals as your Desire--I experience no particular lag even on shittily-coded sloppily-ported Gameloft titles.

I am only sixteen-years old

Oh. Oh lol.

Lol, dude, I appreciate your post (even if you are writing to me in a degrading manner) :)

If what you say about the games is the case, then I guess there's hope for smooth-running games being released later? But, the HTC Desire does have weaker screen graphics than the iPod Touch 2nd Gen, which makes it unable to match it.

Yes, HTC Desire's screen resolution is higher than the iPod Touch one, but the more powerful processor on the Desire should make up for that.

And, if you've EVER tried playing Gameloft's Asphalt 5 on your N1 without experiencing any lag, then bravo. Again, bravo, liar.

Sorry to hear that..

You should've read some reviews on the Internet and watch some youtube video's first. I like what I saw and now I own one. You have to keep in mind that Android is not Apple. So you don't have an overloaded Android Market like Apple has with it's AppStore. I own an iPod Touch 3G myself and I must say, the AppStore is loaded with too much useless apps, 80% of the applications are in my opinion.

That sucks, paying $700 for a product you're not even satisfied with.

You can sell it if you reset your phone to the factory settings, and pack it up real nice. You won't get $700 for it, but it'll help you into the right direction towards your iPhone 4G.

Hope you have better luck with the iPhone when you own one because apparently the iPhone is still a bit buggy.

Tosko, don't get me wrong, there are a lot of things with the HTC Desire that I absolutely love.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear in the first post; I am satisfied with my HTC Desire, but I'm one of those persons who love smooth-gameplay on mobile devices.

Before I bought the HTC Desire, I probably read every review on every major phone review site. The reviews, which rated HTC Desire "best mobile on the market" in almost every review, really made me even more sure that HTC Desire was the perfect mobile device for me. But now that I have this device, there seems to be a lot of (minor) things that keeps it from stealing my heart.

As for buying the iPhone 4, that's not going to happen, as explained in my first post:
But as I am only sixteen-years old, I can't afford buying another phone now.

To be honest, the desire doesn't compare to the iPhone and iPod touch when it comes to games at the moment. Apart from that though I would suggest that anyone disappointed with the Desire either had 'way' to high expectations to begin with, or really hasnt explored the full potential of the phone yet, once you start customising it and adding the right apps, once you set it up well and learn how to use it, its so much better in so many ways.
I owned an iPhone 3G for 2 years and I still think the iPhone is an awesome bit of tech, and the games available for it are the best on any phone, but the main reasons that the developers arent making better games for the android market are

1. there are so many handsets with different resolutions and capabilities to design for, making it harder for developers to bring out a game that works well across many different phones..
2. until we get access to the sd card there isn't room for large complex games on the phone.
3. android users don't seem as willing to pay for good apps, where as apple users have become used to doing so and are more likely to pay

Grats, you bought into Gameloft's scam parade. Asphalt 5 is one of the games that was ported straight from the iPhone: no driver optimization, no hardware optimization, no nothing, just shit shit shit to make a quick buck (which hey, you happily supplied!). Get yourself educated about basic computer software, kiddo.

I'm 25, I can't afford $700 or whatever the sterling price would be, but if I really wanted it I'd have to cut down on other expenses and save up. Seriously, what's stopping you getting a paper round or a part time job?

Like I said, sell the Desire, sell the iPod touch and save up a bit extra and you have your iPhone 4

I live in a country where it's not possible to buy games and applications ;-) And you were the one telling me you were able to play Gameloft games without experiencing any lag, and now you're telling me why it's not possible to play them without experiencing lag due to the game being ported straight from the iPhone.

You are speaking against yourself, you jerk. If your further contributions to this thread are going to be degrading as well, save it for someone else.

Not that I use it, but has anyone used SNesoid or similar for games? I'm tempted to, at least to try it out.

you get an on screen d-pad and buttons that you can configure on both gameboid and snesoid, they are easy to use, run all games very fast and well and there are thousands of games available. The roms can be run from the sd card, the roms are free and the apps are great value for money and are updated regularly.

Some of the Gameloft titles are less shittily coded than others. Sorry I didn't feel the need to pirate Asphalt 5, because frankly playing racing games on a phone is like trying to wash down feces with a drunk bum's vomit. Yes, Dungeon Hunter works more or less without lag. Ditto, what, NOVA and Let's Golf.

Sometimes I wish the forum had a minimum age requirement. Ugh. By the way, I feel the need to ask again: how the hell did you end up paying $700 for a Desire?

Sounds good, I'll give the free app a bash to see how it runs and then upgrade to the paid version if I like.

Anyway, perhaps to the original poster - get these apps and some ROMS and then have lots of fun with some classic games.

I looked at the options as in Iphone and Desire, I am an avid gamer but I really dislike mobile gaming and seen it as a bit of a waste. If i want serious gaming I have consoles/PCs.Mobile probably one day will have stuff comparable to modern consoles that said most of the emulations of old games consoles don't feel the same.Partially because the games are quite dated by the current quality bar. Partially because I have no interest in playing games outside of the living room on a large screen.

I did get a PSP but I rarely use it maybe once a year and then I put films on it or hawk my profile around on it to show people my projects.

I can see for some gaming is important and the Iphone is probably the best mobile smartphone for gaming, that said I wan't bothered about the gaming.

The Android is a more technical phone in terms of very customised, it lets you transfer data freely. It has a lot of stuff that is either unavailable or only just released on the Iphone 4 (multitasking, voice chat, flash etc)

But the Iphone is better for games, and certainly shouts more about its media ability's (The standard music player is better than the Android one) Though I hate ITunes so it was on a backfoot for me. However Apple have the most lockdown of any device.
