What is this "quickoffice" everyone is talking about?

Everyone keeps saying that after today's update, their QuickOffice icon is different.

What is QuickOffice? Is this something that came pre-installed on your phone or is it a paid app?

The only QuickOffice I can see in the market is $15. Am I supposed to already have this?

Yep, you should already have it if you have an Evo. Comes preinstalled.

I believe it only is a viewer and you cannot not edit.

I use the full version of Documents To Go. I has a word document, spread sheet, powerpoint and pdf editor. I actually use it everyday.

Me too, it came free on my old Windows phone a few years ago, and I loved it. I was a little disappointed Sprint didnt include a full version of this or Quick Office on the Evo. Oh well, a few bucks is worth it, I use it everyday as well.

If you take a document from a PC, the Docs To Go reformats the document to fit/view on a mobile platform. The document then retains that formatting when you try to view it again on a PC.

I use it constantly for Spread Sheets at work. I've had it on my last four phones. Each has progressively gotten less functional with the free version. The full versions have remained well worth the money in my opinion.

The paid app of Quickoffice will not show up on the Evo Android 2.2 until Google updates the market to allow paid apps. (Something about DRM and protections in the Market.)

Ohhhhhh! I thought formatting as in Formatting a disc... LOL! Oh yeah, mine does that too... But I don't mind. I use my phone as my primary input device anyways.

My internal storage is almost full...when i try to do updates, it tells me there is not enough room. I have cleared all the caches of my downloaded apps. I am thinking of clearing the data file of Quickoffice, an app that came loaded on the phone from the manuf. I don't use Quickoffice, but there are numerous files in the data section. Can I erase to free up space? How do i do this? every time i select a file there is not option to erase? I am not a programmer, so please excuse my ignorance. I am trying to learn.

Not sure how your phone works but to answer your questions:

1) Yes you should be able to erase the app from your phone. (On my Atrix 4G, its only a little over 19MB.)

2) On my phone I can go thru settings> applications> manage applications> then delete the app.

3) Can you give more details to what files you are referring too?

If you have an SD card slot, you might want to buy the biggest card your phone will support. This will free up internal memory. Some apps can be moved to the SD card as well. (Freeing up application space.) You might be able to back up some of your stuff to an external computer or so, if your phone is capable of doing this.

I used QuickOffice back in the PalmOS days. I also used Docs2Go and both were 'okay' apps. They were not super powerful and had to go with MiniCalc and WordSmith for my needs at that time. Then I moved to Windows Mobile and Docs2Go was certainly no better. That's when I found a real mobile office suite in the form of SoftMaker. Nothing can beat that office program in the mobile world, it litterally blows apart the competition. However, it came at a steep price ($70 for both desktop and mobile versions).

I was excited to hear it was coming over to Android. It's still in beta and it's still a bit slow in loading native documents. But at least all formats are kept. The only thing I'm disappointed in this version is that it's missing quite a bit from the Windows Mobile counterpart. But still more functional than the competitors.
