Don't know if this is true but I have heard one of the reasons they do this is because a lot of people don't do the rebates. IDK how true this is but I am sure a lot of people don't do it.
I have always bought my phones in-store, and I'll tell you why. The $100 mail in rebate is not a big deal one way or the other. Since the charges are applied to the bill, many times I have the rebate before the bill comes due. Before you say that the rebate comes in a gift card, you can go online when you get the card and request a check. I ususally get the gift card in 2-3 weeks, and the the check comes approximately 1 week later.
Anyway, back to my reasons for dealing in-store. I can physically see the phone before I leave the store. i.e. no scratches or cracks, bent this or that, and everything that's supposed to be is in the box. The CSR activates the phone, and I make a call with it before I leave and have my wife call me to make sure it can make & receive calls. The CSR transfers my contacts and I check to make sure they're there. Also, all cases, covers, screen protectors, car chargers, etc. are correct and have correct connectors. Next, when the CSR prints out the receipt, it shows the plan I want, it shows the add-ons I want, (visual voice-mail for example) and the correct corporate discounts we're entitled to. And last but not least, I have my phone in hand and don't have to wait 'til tomorrow, or more if there's a weekend coming up. This last one is not really that important cuz I'm a pretty laid-back guy and don't mind waiting if required. (which you knew because I already told you I didn't mind waiting for the rebate)
Now I'm sure that most who order online have no problems what-so-ever, and I'm glad this is so, but I'm just telling you my reasons for wanting to deal face to face with a person in the store who can make corrections immediately. (if not sooner)
I just thought of something that's a little off topic but it boggles my mind that Verizon does this. When people order the incredible and it's back ordered, Verizon charges their credit card immediately! Nobody, but NOBODY, does this. When you order something online (Amazon for example) even if the product is not backordered they don't charge your credit card until they ship it. Even if you request that Verizon put the Incredible order on your bill, they do so right away. With the length of time the backorders are taking, some may get the bill in the mail with the Incredible on it and be asked to pay before the phone arrives via FedEx. I swear, they'd have to unscrew me from the cealing if they did that to me! (This from a laid back guy who doesn't care much about the MIB. Don't get me wrong though, I will always apply for and get my rebate. I do care that much, haha! After all $100 is a hundred bucks!)
Good luck everyone, sorry this was so long, just got started and couldn't stop,
