So just picked up my wife a Eris, went back an forth a bit between this and Moto but the look, feel and build quality of HTC was soooo much better.

So I am a crack berry user, 1st day storm user ; ) Well they finally got it right on the software so the Storm is now a great, so I gave her my early upgrade.

So where should we start, any good 101 type sites or places to learn about the OS and how to work with it?

Thanks

so far by being at this forum, you have made the best first start :) I would watch a few you-tube videos on your computer to learn the basics and maybe a few tricks, I learn better seeing it done. you will want to download a free virus software, I use lookout which is free in the android market. also download a free app "advanced task killer", this app will let you stop apps that load on start-up and suck your memory, make sure you read up on how to use it effectively and your phone will be way faster. good luck.

I would say that both of these recommendations are a bit controversial. If you are going to go the task killer route (which isn't necessary), just be sure that you pay attention to whether you are actually getting better performance and battery life. Read this before you install a task killer app.

I was not aware that there there any viruses for Android in the wild, and applications are sandboxed, I'd say that running an antivirus app may be a waste of time, but I guess it doesn't hurt, and Lookout has some other useful features.

Welcome to the forum.
The best place to start would probably in the sticky threads at the top. I would recommend the one "Everything you need to know about your HTC Eris".
It has links to a lot of useful info.

Agreed with doogald about the task killer. Follow the stickies for saving battery and making things faster. Run it stock until you get a feel for how your phone performs. If after that you feel you need a task killer, try it out. Don't make an immediate judgement. Run it with one until you get a nice baseline for how it functions then. My guess is that you will find that routine maintenance will keep your phone running smoother than any task killer. (routine maintenance=cache clearing and keeping msgs and call logs trimmed) Also ROOT ROOT ROOT...

Oh btw Welcome to AF. This is really the best place on the web for help with the Eris and Android in general.

pulled this headline from google today: "An employee at antivirus firm Panda Security received a new Android-based HTC Magic with malware on it, according to researchers at Panda Labs."

That's an old story. It was not malware that would affect Android; it was Windows malware installed on the SD Card. And funny that it was a company that sells antivirus software that found it, huh?

:) did anyone else notice that the original post was from 11-11-2009! :D

I just wanted to throw-out a hilarious phrase I saw used yesterday in another thread from Demache: "necro-post" :)

Hope rweddy is still around and doesn't think we ignored him for all this time until today... <grin>

D'oh!! Hopefully he didn't jump ship and get an iphone. :D

+1 ;) Frisco, you just made me think that I should have used "in cahoots" (or some derivation thereof) as my username for this forum! waay better than "scary alien" :D

I've come to the understanding that even aliens can lose their scariness and make good friends and be productive members of society once the language barriers are broken down.

yuck-yuck, etc..

ya know, the little green android dude looks kind-of like an alien...neither of us are very scary, though :)

I kind of of like that little guy.. or gal.

I've always thought the science fiction writers were mistaken about aliens (from off Earth, not from Mexico and Central America) being large or monstrous.

I'll be they're microscopic or at least as small as Tom Cruise.
