Root ROM Suggestions?

I've heard that rooting my Eris is the answer to my Droid woes, but I'm not sure which ROM to pick. Can anyone give me a suggestion based on my needs?

Here's my wish list:
1) Speed - it currently takes me 1-2 minutes just to call someone, which is annoying. Would OC help?
2) Dependability - occasionally I miss calls because it fails to ring (even though it shows up on the screen).
3) Integration with Google Voice, Google contacts and Facebook contacts.
4) Selective connectivity per app - I want to allow apps like Google Maps to connect anytime, but games and other apps to only have access via wifi. I found an app that does this, but I have to root the phone first.
5) GPS support.

What are the benefits to having Sense over not having it? I've heard that it's good, but I don't know why. Would not having it make it go faster?

I think I've found a good walkthrough for rooting my Eris, but are the directions okay to use on a mac? Are there any step by step directions for the mac specifically?

Thanks in advance!

well of course im going to recommend White Widow, especially since all those features are available except 4, but you said theres an app for that so no issues there.

i dont like sense, but thats just be. try it both ways for yourself.
and rooting on the mac is the same, i have a mac myself-switched to ubuntu but when i rooted i was using mac os.

only differences are you need to put ./ in front of all adb commands
ex. ./adb pull
you also dont need to download any drivers.

!

OC helps the phone run faster in general... but not with this problem.
Lost of us (if not most) have had this problem. HAppens to me once in a while. If you're seeing it all the time, i would look into getting a replacement.

Don't worry so much about which rom to try. Try them all:D.

Once you start flashing roms you'll realize how easy it is to go create a NAND backup and try another rom. If you dont like it, simply go back.

Haven't tried WW, but the people that have seem to think it's great.

The ones i recommend, especially for a first timer, is either Ivans's official 1.0, or Senseable.
Both are very stable.

I went through the process and haven't had any problems so far. My only concern is after doing the last part of the third step. Here's what I saw:

Code:
$ ./adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
mtd: read error at 0x00000000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00020000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00040000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00060000 (Out of memory)

mtd: read error at 0x00240000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00260000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00280000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x002a0000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x002c0000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x002e0000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00300000 (Out of memory)

It seems to have worked just fine besides that. Thanks!

To some that is a sign you need to start over and run through the process from the beginning. To others, seeing that is a sign of nothing.

There is a bit of controversy about that string of errors; you'll see postings reporting everything from "just ignore it," to "you're about to brick your phone, don't do RUU whatever you do," "turn off your phone now!" etc.

Like so many things we see reported in the forums, bugs and issues, etc, that string of memory errors seems to have a range of effects depending on the device; not all Erises are created equal, we've found.

Your mileage may vary. ;)

Welcome to Android Forums and welcome to rooting.

unrealnighthawk, this error typically happens when you type the adb commands too fast (i.e., no pause between each command). You've got to let a second or two elapse before typeing the next command, especially commands that transfer data.

Try re-typing the command and see if the error goes away. Some folks have also had to power cycle their phone and re-type the command.

Check out http://androidforums.com/all-things...oot-troubleshooting-guide-htc-droid-eris.html for other pitfalls to avoid.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your help everyone. The Android Market doesn't come with WW, but I should be able to install any apps I want from the SD card, right? Where's a good website to get them from / how is the installation process done?

Does WW have google contacts / facebook integration for syncing contacts? I don't seem to see it and I'd like to see what some other ROMs are like. Is there a ROM that's very close to 2.1 but with OC support?

Thanks again!

Ivan's Eris Official 1.0 w/overclocking and Plain Janes are very close to stock, but with root goodness baked-in :).

There's a section in this thread telling about where to find and research ROMs: http://androidforums.com/all-things...oot-troubleshooting-guide-htc-droid-eris.html

I think I would like to try WW again. Everywhere I read it says to do a nandroid backup first so that I can restore to this version later if I want to, but I can't seem to figure out the difference between the nand backup and the nand + ext backup. Which is preferred?

If you have enabled apps2sd and partitioned your SD card to hold apps, do nand + ext. Otherwise, just do a simple nand backup.

Did you find the apps link on andrizoids page ?

~~AndrizoidSpace~~

On the right side, look for the patches and fixes link and you will find it. Copy it to your SD card and the boot into recovery and install it just like you did the ROM.

Thanks to everyone who replied. FWIW, my most used ROM so far has been ErisLightningBolt2.7 w/Google Apps flashed on. I got both the ROM and the Google Apps from HTC Droid Eris ROM Site. Is it very hard to disable to uninstall apps that I don't really want? Like Amazon MP3, Google Goggles, Handcent, etc?

Congratulations on finding a ROM you like.

Removing/deleting applications is a piece of cake, nighthawk, with an app called Root Explorer available in Market to us root users. ;)

Once you've installed Root Explorer, just go to system > app then click the little "mount r/w" button at the top right.

After that, *carefully* select the apps you do not want, one at a time, by long-pressing each app. A menu will come up offering "delete" along with other choices. Delete each one.

Be careful to read the confirmation dialog on each app after you choose "delete" because it'll remind you of which app you really selected; it is easy to accidentally select an app on the list above or below the one you've targeted.

There are lists of "safe" apps to delete.. but still, be very careful as some are intertwined with needed system functions.

Some I've removed are facebook, twitter, youtube, music, the stock file manager the name of which I've happily forgotten, genie, anything to do with voice. Many more.

The first thing I did after successfully rooting and finding a ROM I then liked, was a nand backup, which I ended up using for the first time because of my rampage in Root Explorer.

Nand restore restored (surprise) my phone to its pre-rampage functionality. I then read around a bit about what and what not to remove.

root ROM restore rampage!?! oh, my! [said out-loud like a phrase from the Wizard of Oz :D]

lol, that's pretty much how everyone does it. Read about it after screwing it up.

Unfortunately for some, they also read about that Nandroid backup after their rampage

Well... I honestly did not, then, understand the relationship between various apps that update in the background, such as the stock HTC weather app, and OS functionality.

I was getting error message prompts, "com.so-and-so cannot start," with the word, "sorry" there.

It would come up at infrequent but regular intervals, I suppose at the intervals weather was supposed to update.. lol.

But yes, you're right; I thought I could just nuke anything in there I did not use.
