Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

The 1st FOTA is offered every 2 weeks (do the date trick)
The 2nd FOTA (The real 2.1) can be downloaded anytime you wish after it's been made available through menu..

(I thought my hart would stop when the progress-bar stopped at (approx) 75% and sat there without moving one pixel for 12 minutes

But was so pleased to find all data intact on the phone.)

Thanks for the quick reply SchOX :)
Have just set date to 13/7/2010 having turned off the automatic time/date settings.
It has synced with google since i saw the sync logo appear
I am not convinced it'll work mind, 3 (UK) do seem to be a bit weird.

Thanks for your feedback too on Part 2, i'll not worry *quite* as much now lol
Good to know all went well for you, thanks again

Branded phones like 3/Orange etc does not have an update ready yet (afaik) - so It's no use setting the date forward before it is ready/availiable.
Ant it might be that thos branded Hero's will not be FOTA upgraded - who knows... (Fingers X'ed for you ;) )

As owner of a '3' branded phone I would prefer if these sort of comments would identify their brand (if any) and country so that we can see the progress of the roll-out.

I've checked the Three website and there's no mention of it there, and as they only guarantee to answer emails within 10 days there seems little point emailing them.

as for phoning them, what chance is their that a Call Centre operative would know anything about it - they only work from predefined scripts in my experience.

Downloaded last night, only couple of slight hitches was losing my APN settings, and homescreen settings; no biggie. More annoying is the loss of swype, but hopefully sort that out today*.

Some great improvements to functionality, well worth the update (if not the wait!) This is the phone it should've been last year.

Edit: (sim-free, not carrier branded)

*Edit: Un&re-install worked a treat, swype back and as good as ever :)

I am a T-Mobile UK customer using a G2 Touch and can just confirm (having seen a friend doing it then trying myself) that if you have previously flashed your G2 Touch with the generic HTC 2.73.95.xxx ROM, your G2 will receive and install both parts of the OTA update successfully.

I am now running 2.1 very happily on my T-Mobile G2 Touch with no interference from any T-Mobile gimping or branding (apart from the first start-up screen, which still says G2 Touch). Already noticing a signal improvement amongst many other lovely things!

Would not recommend anyone rush to try this if the official branded updates (T-Mobile, Orange) come out in the next couple of days just in case, but just thought I would throw this potentially interesting bit of info out there! :)

What's everyone's favourite new features then? :D

Thanks for the warning...poor show though to just 'hang' like that. It seems to be doing the same at 100% as well.
Also i got a warning that SD card needs 25mb of space so my first attempt failed.
Must go...i can hear it starting up...!!!!

To be fair to three - I emailed them and they called me back only a couple of hours later. The support rep implied that the more demand there is the more likely a roll-out is (she claimed to be adding my name to an existing list), but who really knows what goes on at these companies...

Yes I am new, but I've read this thread for months and finally we're starting to get what we all long for (sorry orange users). But one thing I was looking forward to trying out is the speech to text feature. I don't mean the voice search feature that can be downloaded from the marketplace, I mean the one that allows me to dictate a message to send as a text or email or similar. Am I being completely blind? In the mean time I'm back to using Swype having seen the feature missing from the stock keyboard.

Hey all, long time, no post!

I'm out of the loop of all things android and 2.1. I have a T-Mobile G2 Touch, rooted and running MCR 3.1. What are the options? From what I've read (please correct me if I'm wrong!), there's an official HTC update I can apply - will this undo my root access?

Also, are there custom ROMs in the pipeline that might be worth holding out for? Should I just go for one of the custom ROMs now anyway, or are people seeing benefits from keeping it official?

TIA, sorry for the laziness, but I can't keep up ;)
