I don't think this is true I read somwhere in an offical motorola post that nfl, blockbuster and other pre installes apps along with playing them out of dlna and hdmi out. I will try to find the post and link it back
Even the blockbuster app is stating that there videos can be watched from the tv through the droid in stunning hd which is reall only 720p but hell that's still awsome
I don't think this is gonna be an issue, since I believe (BUT NOT SURE) that only DRM protected stuff is going to be unable to be played through the HDMI port. Dunno for sure.
But if I'm wrong, don't bet on a root any time soon. Signed bootloader means, well, it means there will be no custom ROMs even if rooted, and that alone will mean there will be a much smaller enthusiast community around the X.

well according to motodev podcast. HDMI is accessible through user gallery (photo, vid) which is that user manual is stating.
and for root, crossing finger that it can be rooted
That is why everything for home theater is going to HDMI. HDMC is able to control what you can and can not do thorugh a HDMI port. I am sure that the blockbuster app has a sig that allows playback of a movie streamed to the phone. Where it might be nice to have a single connection DVI could carry the same signal for video it just was not secure.
And rooting will not crack this encription most likely.
