If they admit its defective everyone that bought one would be rushing back to Verizon for a refund, and they already have sold a ton of them. What do you expect them to say? You don't come out with a new product and just suddenly find out you cant get parts for it. This process is pre arranged with suppliers MONTHS and MONTHS in advance just so this doesn't happen. Of course its not dead, IMO its being quietly re engineered and it will be re introduced when they have a phone that actually works like it should.

Thats EXACTLY what I'm saying. Having to shut down an assembly line and idle workers for a parts shortage is not tolerated in big industry. It costs them MILLIONS if this happens. This is why contracts with suppliers are made. If its a parts shortage its because the shortage is being caused by bad parts that need re engineering not because there is such a high demand that they can't make enough. Trust me they can make enough.

the screen separation on the Evo is real. I originally did not think it was going to be a good deal, but now the last 4 devices I have used have started to separate (including a new one at Bestbuy); however, the masses will not recognize the defect and that is the reason it is not panic mode yet. dust under the screen with the Hero was bad, but screen separation is much worse. these phones have only been in production since mid May, just imagine the screen in 2-3 months from now. as for the Incredible I'm pretty sure this is just an issue of lack of screens from Samsung and Verizon is not panicking because they have the Moto Droid X right around the corner, which may be relative to the advertising Sprint is doing for the Epic right now, it doesn't even have an estimated arrival date yet lol

EVO and Incredile both have display problems. EVO a quality issue and Inc a supply issue. Both issues have been corrected, but it takes a few weeks to get supply channels filled again. This assumes they expedite shipments via air- if not, over a month to fill channels again.

Your perspective is more in line with the auto industry. In contract manufacturing and HTC operations, they simply set up for the next device. Downtime may be a day for set-up, pull current parts from WIP (work in process) and implement a new BOM (bill of material) on the production floor. HTC is very good at this

I'd bet both devices will be back on sale as soon as they can get them in large enough supplies. Parts, production, and any other reason are holding them back, but it's not that there isn't a market-demand or desire by the sellers to resume sales.

That said, it will cause a crimp in Incredible's momentum more than Evo. Evo has the features to allow it to stay as a premium phone for at least a year. There will be others with better specs and so on, but Evo will still be a very competent smartphone for as long as Sprint wants to sell it.

My theory is that neither Sprint nor VZW expected these phones to sell so well since they were released just prior to iP4. At the same time, the iP4 issues and ATT network are just driving people to these two currently "available" phones. In a couple of months there will be other devices, and we'll see a slightly lesser issue not because they're better but because all the factors of time, demand, and opportunity will be significantly changed/less.
