Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

Updated my unbranded phone this morning.

There were a lot of nerves fraying though. It failed once due to a lack of space, so I cleared my browser cache and tried again. It updated fine second time but refused to load the UI. My phone just sat there with a white HTC screen, but would accept incoming calls etc. After about 15 minutes it had gained a wallpaper and menu bar and I could access the notification bar, but the actual menu was still greyed out and there was a little loading screen. A few minutes after that I got a notification to say my phone was low on space. I selected the notification and it took me to the app manager. I uninstalled a few big apps and bingo... the UI loaded up straight away!

What can I say about the update? It's like having a new phone. So responsive! I'm in work at the moment but I can't stop picking it up to have a play. Gonna have a proper look tonight.

Oh, and I've reinstalled the big apps now and it's still fine.

Hope that's of use to someone if they have similar issues.

Article here.

Frankly, knowing Three, this is actually pretty good. The fact they've even acknowledged that there is a thing called Android and that versions change over time is beyond what I've come to expect from them... :p

That would be good for Three, however I usually take their arrival dates and and add another 2 months on.

As you say, the fact that they even acknowledge the existence of Android is a step forward for them!

Installed 2.1 today and overall it's an improvement as far as i have poked around. It has only been 2 hours so i might still find bugs.

Only thing i found that is not ok is the calendar. HTC's calendar widget has starting day as sunday but if i press the calendar it jumps "into" the calendar and now the first day is monday.

I have not found any ways of telling it that monday is to be the first day on the main windows of the widget.

Other than that it seems like everything is working as expected....Update went well and did not have to enter a single password or reinstall a single application or resync my contacts list .... Even my old SMS history is intact.

here's another comment from the coolsmartphones article. It seems noone at orange has the slightest idea! "I've just spoke to a nice woman at Orange in the
data team who has been folllowing the status of
the 2.1 update and she said officially Orange
haven't even begun to rebrand the Rom and
reckons its going to be between 4 to 8 weeks.
So ill be interested to see if you do end up with
2.1. However, she did say the update would be
80 mb. If the Rom hasn't been created yet how
do they know the size?"

Com on it is just not 1 or 2 days delay- who knows how long it is going to be. I am fed up of poor communication and customer services provided by Orange on the whole.
The customer service with Orange is quite good actually, try Three for few weeks - you'll see how much can it suck.

If you want instant FW updates you need to get yourself a generic, unbranded phone. If you want FW updtaes as soon as Google releases them get the Nexus One and you won't have to wait until any manufacturer will put his BS UI over vanilla Android.

Again - Orange, T-mo and Vodafone are the only real options in the UK when it comes to any customer service. The fact that Three even acknowledged the existence of Android OS is a miracle.

Hi all, first post from me after reading this forum for weeks and getting the breaking news here last night.

I'm relatively pleased with the update. My Hero is now certainly quicker and more responsive with considerably less lag. The pinch home screen is a nice touch and there are some neat settings to monitor memory and battery usage now. Beyond that it doesn't seem a lot different.

Couple of things I was hoping for which so far I've been unable to do...

Google Navigation - I think this is probably because I live in Norway more than any other reason.
Live Wallpapers - I guess these don't work on a Hero, but I believe they drain battery anyway.
Bluetooth file transfer - still the same old garbage for me!
Picasa sync - I've seen a friend's Desire with a Picasa app and sync to the albumns. I don't have this, but I thought it was part of 2.1?
1881.no (Norwegian directory enquiries) - I've lost this app since update.

The only one that I'm really disappointed about is Picasa - anyone had any luck with this?
