Why should I switch from a Blackberry to the Android platform?

Okay, so, thus far, I've used a Blackberry and it's worked amazingly well for the things I do on a regular basis. I mean, e-mail setup is amazingly fast (usually just asks for the username/password, everything else is automatic) and facebook integration is amazing!

Hell, I remember when I linked my g-mail account, it even knew which emails to forward to my BB as e-mails, and which to NOT forward and show as facebook notifications.

Thus far, I haven't found that in Android (G1). I haven't been able to setup that phone with my Yahoo.co.in e-mail account as well! It always tells me that I have the wrong username/password (i've checked it 3 times and logged in using my PC. It's the correct one!)

So... tell me... why should I buy an Android phone instead of the Blackberry Storm 2 (or the upcoming Storm 3). Especially now, with the new Blackberry OS 6 coming out soon.

I'm waiting to be impressed.

Having a BB myself, 8830 and 9650, I can tell you why I am impressed. Try surfing on your BB vs a newer Android with Skyfire. Most(not all) of the pages that won't open due to BB's horrible JAVA restrictions, lack of Flash, etc, etc, are not problems on Android phones and will open right up. I got sick of paying $30 for NOT viewing desired webpages. I can't even got to Tmobiles homepage on my BB, for god's sake.
Plus, BB jsut is behind the times on technology. Slow processors, small RAM/ROM phones. Not BB bashing, just saying why I am jumping ship.

I had a Droid for a few days and it was so much better than my BB Curve! I loved being able to read my email before getting out of bed and facebook is so much more user friendly on the Droid! And everything is was so much faster! I can't stand my BB now that I had a taste of it and can't wait to get the X in my hands!

Hear, Hear! After playing on the new Android phones, my 8830 feels like dialup versus high speed internet. Can't wait to get my new __________(insert Android phone here).

You must be the only person on the boards to think this. How many 'crap facebook' threads do we get on here? Lots.

Don't get me wrong, I've come from a bold 9000 which I did like to a desire. I will never change back unless blackberrys do something radical, but I maintain that if facebook and email are priorities, BB is the way to go.

+1 on both counts.

I wish someone could write a BB emulator for txts/email, unified inbox.

My storm 2 does everything i need a phone to do, the Dinc does most of the stuff I want a phone to do. BB for work, Dinc for play....love android but as clunky as BB os can seem it works.

I didn't say facebook and email were my priorities, I just said how much better facebook worked on my droid while I had it. No comparison to my curve! I deleted the one that came on the phone and downloaded a different version and it worked great. However, the main reason I like it better is because it's just so much faster! I can't even begin to guess how many times I've tried looking something up on my bb and just got so frustrated by how slow it was that I gave up.

Speaking of Facebook on the Android...... is there any way to look into my Inbox in the Facebook app? I could not find anything like that. That Facebook app is indeed very limited.

I carry both the Desire and Blackberry. Since my email is critical to me - no one does email like Blackberry. It may not look always look as pretty - but the Blackberry BIS is still unparalleled out there.

Why should you switch...? Because the BB OS is an outdated, badly-coded, unoptimized bit of software that makes some incarnations of Symbian look like they're from the future? Because all BB phones look ugly as sin and come with terrible internals, slow processors and low memory? How's media viewing, web-browsing, and using the phone like a small computer working out on your BB? Do those pieces of shit even have GPUs?

FYI about the Facebook app, you can just use the touch.facebook.com on your browser instead. Fortunately, since the Android browser doesn't suck giant donkey balls, the touch-optimized mobile web is quite smooth. In fact, again because the Android browser isn't an antiquated turd, you can even switch to a desktop view and everything will still load fine. Flash, Java, everything. Just like on your PC.

So... tell me... why should I buy an Android phone instead of the Blackberry Storm 2 (or the upcoming Storm 3). Especially now, with the new Blackberry OS 6 coming out soon.

There are people who are willing to buy the Storm and ready to be scammed by the Storm 3? I understand that even diehard BB fans think RIM's abortive attempts at touchscreen phones are ****ing horrible. Oh look at that Surepress and that low, low, low resolution. No. For a touch-optimized experience, the BB OS doesn't even remotely compare to Android.

What does the upcoming OS6 even promise that'll make up for its horrid track record? I saw the promo trailer on Engadget and it was a laughingstock.

I currently have a Storm 2 and I will be getting the Droid X when it comes out. The browser on the Storm is just so slow and pokey. Even with wifi it seems to take forever for a page to load. I tried alternate browsers (Opera mini and Bolt) and did not see much improvement. Also, they could not import the bookmarks I had created with the native browser. Although there is more internal memory for the Storm 2 (vs the Storm 1), I dread getting that "not enough memory" message when I try downloading an app. Speaking of apps, the BB app store is sorely lacking.

I just think the Android OS is now leap years ahead of the BB OS. The Android phones provide a great selection of function and features: More internal memory, faster processors, better cameras, better touch screens, higher resolution displays, more apps.

We can't tell you. You need to determine this for yourself. The OP verges on being a "do my homework for me" thread IMO. Selecting a device is always about finding what suits you best. If Yahoo mail is a priority, I wouldn't recommend Android at all, given my fiancee's experience with her Yahoo mail. Sometimes it works and she can use the Email app. Sometimes it doesn't and she has to use the mobile web interface. She never uses WiFi (known issue with Yahoo).

However, if the reasons posted in the above replies matter to you, then they would be good reasons to switch. As much as I loved all 6 of my former BB's, I'm not switching back from my Droid. Android is just far more extensible. Read around, try the devices (I suggest something more recent than the G1) in person. Despite all the posts above, one size does not fit all. It's entirely possible that a BB is better suited to you.

BIS is unparalleled (which only matters to those using POP accounts) but the oft parroted "no one does email like Blackberry" isn't something I'd agree with. I've used a BB on BES with Exchange for years. It was great but I definitely prefer my Droid with ActiveSync (and Touchdown). True sync > push and reconcile IMO.

A BB emulator would be very difficult, if not impossible without a PIN and access to RIM's network. You don't need a BB emulator to have a unified inbox.

You're definitely not talking about the Droid. My BB 8310's camera does better, particularly in anything but midday sun or other bright lighting situations. :p

My comment on "no one does email like Blackberry" is predicated very much on BIS. BIS syncs with Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail (for those with older Hotmail accounts) without POP. Email that is received through any of those are pushed immediately and not according to a POP poll at a certain interval by BIS (which it does for the POP accounts). So, I really do stand by the "no one does email like Blackberry" but then again, maybe I should say "Blackberry IS" instead - at least until someone produces something similar out there. It doesn't look as pretty, but I get on average about 150-200 emails a day via multiple accounts, and the Blackberry interface works well with that for me.

Do you host your own Exchange server, or use an enterprise service or other online host? BIS isn't an additional cost since it's included in the Blackberry data plan and that includes other services such as BBM. Do you like Touchdown? I was tempted to give that a try.
