No more 3G android phones for Sprint?!

Well, we know why the Nexus One got dropped like a hot potato. With the announcement of yet another Android phone (Samsung Epic) that runs on the 4G and has the $10 up-charge, it is clear that Sprint has decided the way to squeeze more dollars out of us is with the premium charge for 4G. I highly doubt Sprint will ever release another 3G Android phone.

Ugh. I'm frustrated. The CEO freaking said no up-charge for 4G!

I'm keeping my Moment for a decade now, just to stick it to them with the lower priced plan.

PS change the topic of your thread kid.

The Samsung Moment was one of the first Android devices for Sprint, but after a good bit of playtime, you might have sent it back for the Hero. That was Sprint’s Android lineup then – now things are a little (a lot) different. Sprint has the HTC EVO 4G and will be getting the Samsung Epic 4G sometime soon as well. But, if neither of those devices are your cup of tea, then you may be interested in the upcoming Samsung Intercept – AKA the Moment 2.
There are no hard specs on the Samsung Intercept (Moment 2) handset, but we do know have a few juicy details to share with you. The Sprint Samsung Intercept will sport a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen display (likely an AMOLED display), Android 2.1 OS, an upgraded camera, WiFi, GPS, and a 4 row slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard itself has been revamped, but still retains the original Moment’s look and feel. The refined keyboard looks much more usable, but it remains to be seen if the changes are enough to make a difference. I like my keyboards with some symmetry, meaning a Shift button on both sides.
The Intercept looks to be a pretty decent mid-ranged device, and hopefully a decent sequel to it’s predecessor, but until we get some more internal specs on it, we’ll just be hoping for the best. It does look like the Intercept will be available in two color schemes: Pink and Black. It’s rumored to be released on July 11th, but pricing still remains a mystery. I couldn’t imagine it being near the price of the EVO or the Epic, but have a hard time believing the device will be near the $100 price point as well.

Looks like the Moment's over for Samsung and Sprint -- check out these these leaked shots of the SPH-M910 Intercept, said to be the carrier's new mid-range Android slider. Screen size is said to be the same at 3.2 inches, and the keyboard certainly looks much nicer, but we can't help but be bummed to hear this thing will launch Froyo-free with Android 2.1 -- a 2.2 update is said to be a "high probability," but it took Samsung and Sprint some seven months to update the Moment to 2.1, so we're not holding our breath. The rumored launch date is July 11, so we'll see how much of this is true around then -- for now, we're betting Samsung will be doing its best to keep us focused on Galaxy S sets like the Epic 4G.

What in the world are you talking about the Epic is not out just like the Moment 2....

LOL

ME thinks a TROLL alert.

I love my Sprint plan. The service is solid, the customer service folks always try to be helpful, and the plan is way cheaper than anyone else.

The Epic has been officially announced, so the specs are known. The Moment 2/Intercept has not been officially announced, so no one really knows the specs.

The Epic was not known to be 4G until it was officially announced. I see no reason they couldn't/wouldn't do the same with the Intercept.

Edit - Also, neither of the stories you copied mention what cell radio the phone has.

I was talking to a sales guy at Sprint today about the $10 charge and he said that it's not really for the 4G, it's for the fact that the EVO and other 4G phones can and will so much more data then 3G phones, so this is actually what your paying for. He said there is a data cap, but no one on 3G reaches it, but will on 4G.

That's typical sales guy BS. 4G phones can't do anything more than my 3G Moment can do on wifi. The charge is clearly for 4G access. Sprint finally realized they were too much cheaper than all the other smart phone plans out there. That's like the airlines telling you that you have to turn off your phones/electronic devices because they might interfere with the plane.

I'm not surprised about the data cap though. That will probably bite someone in the a$$.

The $10 fee is NOT for the use of 4G, it for the use of the hardware. I agree it's a bovine excrement fee but you're wrong about what it is for.

Just because Sprint spins the advertising as it not being for 4G don't mean it ain't. That was my whole point with the comparison to the airlines claiming your wifi or cell phone will screw up an airplane's tech. It's simply not true.

If the fee is just for the hardware, will the fee go away when the hardware is mediocre/obsolete in 18 months?

We'll know for sure if the Intercept comes out with poor tech specs, but a 4G radio and carries the $10 fee.

I clearly don't understand why, but Sprint and Samsung have released another 3G android phone.

Why Sprint would forgo the 4G fee, I don't know.

Why Samsung would compete with their own device (Epic), I don't know.

Stupid corporations.

I got used to the $10 but I don't like it and almost dumped my EVO because of it. I still don't think it's fair but Sprint told me to take a hike and enjoy my new phone. I contest that I'm not using anymore data with my EVO than I did with my Blackberry 8330 and I won't be using 4G in San Diego. Oh well... It just stinks that I've put up with Sprint's crappy selection of phones for years and then when a game-changer phone comes out, I gotta' pay more.. Sprint doesn't hear my screams... LOL.. Evo's a sweat phone.

I hear ya on the $10 fee.. at least it wasn't as bad as Vzw.. When I had them I had their unlimited data plan.. my wife and I both had Palm Treo's.. my boys had dumb phones... all was good.. then suddenly they decided that smartphone data was different than regular data (which worked fine for 2 years) and that upon renewal of my contract I would be slapped with an extra $30 bucks for each smart phone. needless to say, I kicked them to the curb and haven't looked back yet.. (they never could explain how smartphone data was different than...well... data)
