My phone overhearts waaaaay too often, I dont even use the phone that much and all of sudden I'm at a orange/green light and my phone wont charge, I use a task killer and get rid of background programs all the time, I still have this problem all the time.

How long have you had the device?

Is the warmth occurring during charging?

At first glance it seems that you've got a defective device in need of replacement. At second glance it could be that only the charging cable/charger may need replacement.

occurs on all chargers, I tried and went through quite a few. I've had my Eris, like less then a month.

I would not hesitate to take mine back if that were occurring, but only after trying a new battery.

The term, "over heating" is a loose one, though; it could mean merely warmer than usual to some. The deal breaker, though, is the fact that it will not take a charge (providing your battery has not been damaged).

basically it gets warm after a bit, maybe like an hour or 2 of use, then I have to wait for it to cool and then it will charge, very aggravating. I already dealt with a refurb that had shit call reception.

Well, here's how I would approach that problem:

- new battery.. if that did not resolve the issue

- new cable and charger.. if that did not resolve the issue

- Verizon store for replacement of the device

Refurbs get mixed reviews, I've seen in more than one forum. But you already know you have a bad phone (if the cable and battery turn out to be ok), so taking a chance on getting a better one seems prudent.

Does that actually concern you? I think not. I already keep minimal application tasks running by using the task killer.

There are some apps that are known to cause the phone to work too hard, and therefore overheat the battery. I suspect he was trying to find out if you had any of the problem apps on your phone. It's also entirely possible that the task killer is illing something the phone needs to run, so it restarts the app, which then gets killed etc etc

I would try this approach:
(1) Pull the battery, wait ~1 minute.
(2) Reinsert the battery and power up the phone.
(3) DO not start any app, connect it to the charger.
See if it gets warm under these conditions.

What this procedure does, it makes sure that no background app with high cpu usage runs and loads the system down.

If the phone still gets warm, then perhaps you have a hardware problem
(battery, charge control circuit in the phone, etc.)

If the phone does not get warm then the problem is most likely software related.

I'm sorry but I've had most of my apps for a long time, this problem is getting worse and used to not even exist, any app that has high usage has been on my phone before this problem. I often check whats running and i dont notice any restarts.

I just tried the process you explained, now my phone is currently off and charging(yeah it works for now) Any other advice?

Thanks mhotovec - that's exactly it. Craigslist (formerly craigslistnotifica) sent an update last week that killed my battery for half a week before the next update fixed it.

Drognar - nothing of yours concerns me - I was just trying to help. Factory reset and see if it persists without any additionally installed apps. If it does not, install your time tested apps one at a time to see which one betrayed you.

You also might try laying-off the task killer for a while. I've read a few other threads where users were having troubles with their Eris and once they stopped manually killing tasks and let the Eris manage the system by itself, the phone calmed down and behaved better.

Personally, I loaded a task killer application in December, fooled around with it for a few days, then unloaded it and never looked back. I haven't killed a single task in 2010. I do however shut the phone off while I'm sleeping so maybe that helps.

well I havent had a charge issue since I took the battery out and reloaded it, I think I'll just do the same in the future, thanks anyway guys.

Good to see it's resolved, at least for now, Drognar.

I'll just add that it could be possible that some type of contaminant was temporarily in the battery area, between one or more of the three contacts on the charging circuit and the battery itself; removing the battery could have dislodged whatever it was (dust, a bit of moisture, etc).

I use an alcohol wipe to clean the battery contacts and the inside of the case once in a while. A pencil eraser also works well for the battery contacts.
